Just got mine delivered. Thanks Greg. You’re a positive riff influencer. What a fantastic amp. The clean channel sounds amazing and though it sounds great with my Deadweald (another shout out to you and ThrashDamon) it doesn’t really need it.
Man this looks great! I wouldn't worry about having a mid knob. It has a baxadall style tone stack, which typically have more midrange than the FMV (fender, Marshall, vox/bass, mid, treb) tone stack. The Baxadall tone stack at neutral tone control setting is really flat as compared to a FMV tone stack usually has a slight scoop. Also turning up the mids on a FMV doesn't give you any more mids when you turn it up, where a baxadall tone stack will when you turn back the bass and treble controls. The mids actually increase in volume. I can wait to get my hands on one of these!! Great video!
That’s right! Thank you for checking it out. I absolutely love this amplifier! For only 5 watts and it’s simplicity it really sounds incredible cranked up! Cheers from Nashville. 🤘
this hi gain tone is great. I'm really surprised it come from such a small head. and I appreciate this kind of demo without effects, ODs, drums etc. which just get in the way of hearing how the amp actually sounds. A question though: you say "Not to be confused with the old T5 MkIII"which is the one I find on Hiwatt homepage, so what is the right name/code? Also they got no dealer in Italy, where I live. Thanks a lot!
pennabis It’s a phenomenal little high gain amp called the Hi-5 they are available in the UK and US through Motor City Music. Thank you so much for enjoying this video I love this amplifer!
@@AngryTonesRiffClips there is ambiguity between hi-5 and T5, even on hiwatt's homepage, often they are described with both names, or name of one and pics/vids of the other. that's a pity. I'll keep trying though, thank you!
@@danielcarter3928 yes I recommend the hi-5. The combo especially because I think the little ten inch celestion they put in it is actually doing something special. The amp is very touch sensitive and high definition. I have a Marshall 2525c and a 68 vibro champ and at times the hiwatt stands out as the most dynamically sensitive. It’s pretty compressed but I love that. The clean channel is very high fi sounding. I love the lead channel to. Best way I could explain the gain channel Is it nails stone temple pilot’s sounds. It’s a dead ringer with my sg playing everlong by foo fighters as well. It doesn’t have a lot of bottom end though which is expected at a 5 watt 10 inch combo. Also if you play edge of breakup strat tones this isn’t the amp without using a pedal. The cleans are clean and the dirt is dirty. If you want a dirty clean you’ll have to get the t-20 because that amp has both a volume and gain knob on both channels. The high five only has a gain knob on the lead channel.
@@danielcarter3928 that amp has been hard to get lately but Motor City Guitar usually has them in or gets them if you call them and they’ll ship. Great guys there. It’s my local music shop so I’m in there a lot.
Hey man, your riffs and the Hi-Watt tones were sick and wrong in all the right ways! Great "grunting" chug tones. I'll bet that little 5-watt head can push a 4x12" cab to some "pants flapping" volumes!
Haha! Thank you Andy. Yes definitely, it drives my 4X12 to some serious levels of hearing loss, if it’s cranked up! I’d love your opinion, check out my video with the Hiwatt Hi-5 with the Deadweald Audio Duality DX Overdrive into my 4X12 it sounds absolutely ridiculous! Tones are aggressive and chugs are disgusting! 🤘🤘🤘
Angry Tones Riff Clips Love these smaller tube amps. I actually have the Randall RD5 head, it has an effects loop but it doesn’t really do cleans but your Hiwatt really does have great cleans to go with the high gain.
To be honest the Randall RD1H has way more high gain qualities for thrash or death metal than the Hiwatt Hi-5 and the Blackstar is ok but weak unless it’s modified. I actually have a video showing how heavy the HT-5 is on my channel too. Thanks for checking it out! This Hi-5 is sick but to achieve actual thrash or death tones an overdrive is definitely recommended.
Hi Greg, it would be great if you could do the same demo - again, this is how amp demos should be in my opinion - for the super hi 50 (not the custom version, which is too expensive and of which it is possible to find some good demos). I've been playing for years a SS maxwatt g200r hd, which I love, but now I'm dreaming about playing a tube head upon which fortin put his hands (even if it's the cheaper version). Keep up the good work. Ciao from Italy. David
Thank you for checking it out! Much appreciated! HIWATT amps are killer! Fane speakers are awesome too! They just aren’t as punchy in the mids or as tight in the low end for my style of playing.
Damn man what's that riff at 3:50? Its soo sick. I'm kinda new to heads and cabs, thinking about getting this. Is there any way to go direct in to a DI>interface or do you have to go to a mic a cab? Can you go head > cab > interface? My research is telling me no.
Thanks man! All original riffs! It’s great! I mic a 4X12 old school style when I record. However you maybe able to use a load box or something to go head into attenuator or direct out. Not sure…
Actually, you are incorrect in stating this is the first time Hiwatt got into the high gain market. In the early 80s they made heads with EL84s in them,. I believe they were labeled 30 watts. They (at least the ones we had in our band) had more gain than you would ever want or use. We mainly used 100's and 50's, but we did use the 30s in the studio sometimes for leads. I'm glad they've got a 5 watt version,. I would like to buy one.
Thank you for that history. However the owner himself at NAMM 2019 stated this amp and the custom super high 50 are their first amps to dabble into ultra high gain metal territory.
@@AngryTonesRiffClips The owner(If I recall,..his name was Dave Reeves, and his wife's name was Daphne) has been dead for a few decades. Not sure where you get your information. You must be awfully young,....or have an awfully low i.q. Not having much money back then,..the first hi gain I played was 30 watt around 1983. I could never use all the gain. or even try. It wasn't high on my list,..I didn't even have a set of genuine Hiwatt spkrs. yet. FYI, Dave Reeves is was once quoted mentioning what he called a hiwatt bulldog,..I think it was a combo from the late 70s and very few were made. I have never seen one. If you want to learn something,..do what you can to dig up an original hiwatt head with el 84s in it,..and you will agree you could never use more gain than that,.. (or actually even use all the gain available,..I sure couldn't,..even when recording leads).,
@@pukeschannel6882 oh you've gone ahead and pulled the IQ card. The guy responded to you without any bad faith or intention and u just insult. Get a grip. Also companies get new owners, merge, get bought etc. when they pass on or want to pass the company on to someone else. So he probably didn't talk to dave reeves, he probably talked to either Darren Atkinson or Alex Bak as they are the current owners.
@@Yourd4d I was correct. Take it how you want...Badmouth me all you want. But I was still correct. At the very least there was a deficit of info. involved and yet it was repeated as truth. (If you actually believe the current owners of Hiwatt have no knowledge of the EL84 hiwatts of the early 80s,..or the original one (I think late 70s) called a "bulldog"..I have some swampland to sell you in florida),.. Usually , in life,..you learn to keep your mouth shut until you know for sure you are correct. Repeating wrong information does no good for anyone. And this time,..it apparently came all the way from the "current owners"? of Hiwatt. I mean, how many different owners has Hiwatt had since Dave Reeves died? I lost track. And...I'm guessing none of the owners (of the hiwatt trademark) that came after even knew him. His original amp builder, Harry Joyce, did NOT stick around after that time. I do recall harry made his own amps under his own nameplate.... I regret not buying one. They were affordable when they first came out.
@@pukeschannel6882 I'm not disagreeing on the issue of when they started to use high gain in hiwatt, I'm pointing out how you didn't think that owner he may have talked to was one of the 2 current owners and sure it could've been owners before the current ones as well. But I have no idea why you instantly thought he implied that he talked to dave reeves.
No built in distortion lol! You’re hearing just the amplifier. It’s actually amazing it’s a 5 watt Hiwatt high gain amplifier with a EL84 power tube and a 12AX7 preamp tube. It’s definitely badass!
josé andrés Yanes Thank you so much! Everything in this video is straight into the HIWATT amp. No boost, No overdrive, No bull just pure tube power. It’s definitely got a great high gain stage. 🤘🔥🤝
Yes! Hiwatt just shipped a bunch of these to Mayalls Music! Here’s a link! mayalls.co.uk/ If your in the USA reach out to representative Arv directly on the Hiwatt Official Instagram page. He can get a list of US dealers for you.
Cool amp, what happens when you crank the clean channel? That's really the classic hiwatt sound. You say it's a glassy clean, is it similar to a blackface fender tone? Anyway If the clean channel does anything interesting turned up, maybe include it another video
taggle waggle Hey thank you for enjoying this lil amp it’s absolutely phenomenal. Yes crank the clean get a little richness with break up bit of dirt. Sounds sweet for blues licks especially with that extra dirt in the clean.
Soundstorm81 Always! But just not in this video much. Just in the beginning I demonstrated the headroom with a volume roll up/roll down. I have a low gain setting I recorded the other day I can send it to you. It’s also posted on my Facebook
Marcelo Belloni That’s right. This is entirely different NEW series. Hiwatt Hi-5 Pure Tube Amplifier is geared and engineered towards high gain players. Way More gain than the T5 MKIII which no longer is being made to my knowledge. Thank you for enjoying my demo of this amp! I love it.
do you think this would be a solid upgrade over my Orange Crush 35rt? want something low wattage that can get into dirty blues territory for home use! this looks like it may be the best low wattage option for me! i’m really interested in how my pedals react to a tube amp vs. my solid state !
Have you tried this little beast with a guitar equipped with active PUs? (e.g. EMG) Btw. beautiful guitar and great taste! I have an old Ltd HB-300 (Horizon Baritone) and I love it even beeing an explorer type player.
They still offer and currently produce the Black Hi-5 series with black Hiwatt badge. The limited run of 100 are the Green Tolex 420 series and black tolex green badge series Hi-5 amps! They are awesome! Same amps different colors.
No FX Loop is a no go. I like the trails from my delay and reverb to be there, and use my volume pedal after the preamp to keep my tone when doing swells. Cool little amp otherwise.
That’d be awesome lol! However that’s a $4000 amp he’s using. Now this ones under $400 so yes it gets great tones with a modern high gain feel. But it’s nothing like the DR504 that amps legendary.
@@AngryTonesRiffClips So the Hiwatt site states: "Clean Channel voiced for that classic Hiwatt clean tone: sparkly, present, punchy, full, and forward." So if you run the clean channel full out (or overdrive it a bit with a clean boost), it does NOT get that classic tone? I see guys trying the Gilmour thing, but no one is doing a video demo of it used that way (ala Townshend).
Great riffs going on there ,I’ve an opportunity to buy this 5 watt head ,I’m loving those tones it’s just there’s so much choice I’m not sure what to go for ?
It’s definitely a killer little amplifier, and it sounds absolutely incredible. Now if you need more than 5 watts all tube volume and an effects loop then yes there’s always other options. It’s absolutely perfect for my home studio use at home and it actually gets very loud running into a 1X12, 2X12 and even a 4X12 cabinet.
Angry Tones Riff Clips That’s great to hear! I’m trying to get really solid clean tones for jazz and nice dirt for blues and rock. What cab size do you recommend?
Interesting....there is a clip of the T5 small combo (also in a small head version like this one) with a similar control layout to this one and was so shocked by how much gain I was hearing with the knob at 9!o’clock
chatter Hey that’s a great combo. However this is different and the tone stacked gain stage is completely different. Hiwatt is getting into lower wattage Heavy Rock/Metal amps. This was just released. 🤝
Lewis Keller Glad you like it! It’s about $300 and I ordered mine through Motor City Music, they were the first US dealer to receive the HI-5 head from Hiwatt. 🤘
Yes sir it’s much more modern being it was designed with Mike Fortin. However gain at 9 o’clock it’s pretty awesome, beautiful Hiwatt classic crunch all day! This was a metal demonstration. 🤘
Yes. The original T5 MKII is a more classic gain Rock n roll amp, whereas the Hiwatt Hi-5 was designed with more high gain for heavy rock to metal tone. It’s a great clean amp as well being the switch/button goes from clean to the overdrive channel.
Sick I have a t5 mkIII and the gain def seems like it lower than what you got there. Funny I can't find almost anything about the t5 anywhere. Also I've see hi5 amps with the back panel labeled " hi5/t5" so that has me confused
