This video documents my assembly of the 90 watt, 135 watt, and 260 watt versions of Horticulture Lighting Group's Quantum Board kits. Note - Soldering leads is not necessary and I have since learned that it may be best to just leave the bare copper ends instead. Just be sure to keep them tightly twisted and neat.
For preassembled kits, check out the HLG 300 (amzn.to/2NFtalg) and HLG 550 (amzn.to/2LwcXBu) on Amazon.
Part 2 of the review is here: • HLG Quantum Board Kit ...

I'm so glad you put this instructional assembly video up. The leads coming off the driver didn't line up like the ones to the power cord. Black (hot) white (neutral ) silver colored on the plug side,and green copper colored to ground, fit and lined up in the screw in connection perfectly as the wires lay. But the driver leads didn't and had to be crossed over instead of lining up perfect, as the power cord did. Had i just guessed and assumed that they did,where the blue (neutral ) lined up on the black (hot) water proof power cord hole,and brown vice versa,my house would be stinking something fierce right now, I'm sure there'd be a charred spot where the light once was, or something resembling a melted smoldering pile that once proported to be an hlg 125. Or that's probably what the firemen would've said. Lol! So yes,this was incredibly helpful, and I was once a journeyman electrician! You think hlg could've tossed a little assembly pamphlet into the box? I still have to watch the rest of your videos on these,hopefully you cover the adjustments to the driver voltage dimmer option, i've got 2 holes on my meanwell hlg 120 h 54 a and wondering what is for what. Thanks again, really valuable, as in $187. worth of not cooking it,un like some bad results in high-school times with poor sizzled car stereo decks! Lol! ▪☆☆☆▪

You dont actually need a lot of thermal compound, but it will improve heat transfer significantly. Here is how i did it: I took measurements of where the 16 lanes of diodes would be on the heatsink, marked the lanes with a pen, and pulled thin lines of thermal grizzly where the diodes sit, place pcb ontop, screw tight, good to go. Will improve life of the diodes for sure.

Great series of videos. I have enough knowledge to be dangerous but always a bit hesitant when messing with power and hard to get boards. Your videos are great reassurance and step by step guide. I just ordered one board but know I will get another soon. Can I use the Mean Well HLG-240H in the double kit for one board and then add another later? HLG-240H-C1050A? I have not ordered the HLG-120H-54A recommended and would eventually rather have one driver than two. Thanks.

Sir, from one electrician / technician to another- your manual dexterity tinning your conductors is impressive. I'm sure there are those that have no comprehension of what I refer to, but I also know most have never done it either. Nice job. At around 11 minutes you were concerned about wrecking the conductors insulation when you pulled the wire thru- just take your 6 in one screwdriver with a Phillips bit and ream or de-burr the hole, problem solved. Say, you need a job? We're Hiring! I work in a world class ductile iron foundry and we just can't seem to find many educated people willing to help us out! We need industrial electricians / technicians and the pay and benefits aren't bad, of course you would have to jump the border and move near the Michigan / Wisconsin border.

What were your findings again on "to tin or not" for wires that are going into a screw terminal. I remember you mentioning something about not doing it because the solder can flow (from heat?) over time and cause a loose connection. Think I should tin the meanwell's input wires before I put them into the L2T connector?

@jc6226
@jc6226 5 лет назад
That is a good idea, i didn't think of that. I got 135w kit recently and was going to get another one soon. Then I noticed if i bought 260 boards and sink for 45$ reduced sale price, i could purchase the driver, wires and connectors separately and save about 90$ compared to two 135w diy kits. However, I thought twice about returning 135w because it seems to be worth to not only have two boards but also two drivers in terms of utility and flexibility. If one driver fails, you have another. At some point it will be likely that I will being doing different plants at different stages of growth side by side. Or if you have both veg and flowering areas with different heights and time cycles, or staggered harvest food production, you have two boards and two drivers to accomodate regular changes. Either way, I think i would rather have two sinks so that they can be spaced out better in small spaces

Hi Iam buying some QB. I was wondering what you think of running only QB verses COBS. Will only running QB be good enough light?
@LEDGardener
@LEDGardener 7 лет назад
Absolutely - these boards are typically more efficient than COBs. I'll have some PPFD results for the QBs in my 3rd and final video for the review and I can compare them to some CXB3590s with similar power.
@re2590
@re2590 5 лет назад
That depends on your grow area firstly. Or CANOPY if you wish to call it that. The type of light it produces is great, and the leds are very efficient at over 2.0. Below 2.0 is not considered efficient. The light they output is intense but not so hot. Their very bright. In an all black room, if you open the door my walls look like an atom bombing going off, the light is very, very good

Depends what the wattage and par is. If 1 65w is only 300 ppfd. Then having 2 is still only 300ppfd just a wider spread. So depends then on what size is your canopy. My 260w is a 4x4 veg and 3x3 flower. So in a 6x6 2 would be enough. Watch the video, check out his ppfd chart and see if the flower recommendation matches the size of space you want to cover "multiplied by 2 ofc" so if thr hlg is a 1x1 then having 2 would cover a 2x2 area, or 4 in a 4x4 etc.

Hey bro, I'm about to buy everything from HLG except the driver. What driver should I buy if I'm gonna run the QB304 board? I want to be able to dim the light through the onboard dimmer. i want to be able to get the maximum output through the light, but I also want to be able to dim it when need be. I'm just a little confused when it comes to getting the right dimmer. Also i want to be able to add 1 more board to it at a later time. Like I said I'm just a lil confused as to which Meanwell driver I should get that has the onboard potentiometer cause there are so many to choose from. Thanks Bro!
@LEDGardener
@LEDGardener 6 лет назад
Hey dude, a Mean Well HLG-240H-C1050A should do the trick. A single QB304 is a little under the specified minimum voltage, but the test report shows that it held constant current far below that minimum, so it should be fine. It'll definitely run 2 of these boards in series if you ever added another. I wouldn't run the board any harder (1400mA is next for drive current and that's a little too close to max for comfort). Make sure you get the "A" version if you want the built-in potentiometer. You'll also get a little extra current if you go with the A version so that's a bonus.

So to understand correctly if you want the boards to split the amperage you wire positive to positive. 9 boards splitting a 4.5 amp driver would share about 0.5 ma each.
@LEDGardener
@LEDGardener 6 лет назад
Right. You've got it. Positives go together and negatives together in parallel.

I assume the 320 is also connected in series? AND in the waterproof housing, one of the connections is made of copper. Does it matter which wire this attaches to?
@LEDGardener
@LEDGardener 6 лет назад
Tommy Gun you bet. I had a closer look and on the AC connector, the copper is for ground, the black is hot, and the silver is neutral.

faha 3000k for flower 4000k for veg. But u can use either for both & it will still be good. 4000k for flower will make smaller flowers but a bit potent. 3000k for veg will make plants stretch too much. But they will still be good!

is there a trick to tinning the stranded wire??? I can't get this to work to save my life... I'm trying to do exactly what you do in the video.. I'm heating the wire with the soldering iron and touching the solder to it but it WILL NOT melt and coat the wire!! I can only get the solder to melt if I touch it directly to the iron, but then I still can't get a droplet to stick to the wire or coat it... it just beads up and drops off, I've wasted so much solder and I'm losing cm of cable with every failed attempt..... what am I doing wrong here?? I'm using a 55W soldering iron set to 425 C and lead-free rosin-core silver solder that melts at 422 C.... so confused.....
@LEDGardener
@LEDGardener 7 лет назад
My only tip is to make sure to melt a little bit of solder onto the tip of your iron and THEN use the iron to heat the wire and melt the solder through the strands from the other side. That little dab of solder on the tip allows the iron to transfer heat much better. I'm by no means a soldering expert but this has always worked for me. I'm probably running my iron hotter too.
@jollygreengiant7070
@jollygreengiant7070 7 лет назад
I had the same problem my first few times trying to remember how to tin it.. a tiny bit of flux on the wire and tiny bit of solder on the iron helped pull the solder thru the wire. I just held the iron right on the bottom and a small drop of solder would run right thru.. like anything it's practice that gets you into the groove of it :)
@nickcove7355
@nickcove7355 5 лет назад
Ganja Mystic get some lead solder and give it an extra smear of flux. The flux helps flow and also transfer heat better as was mentioned above.
@donpreisler322
@donpreisler322 5 лет назад
Flux is your friend. It helps the solder get into the strands of wire. Even if you're using rosin core solder, a dab of flux makes a world of difference.

And which driver? HLG-240H-C1050?
@rikkilee9409
@rikkilee9409 7 лет назад
i put monkey grunt (heat sink compound)on my heat sinks and checked the temp of the board side. the one with heat sink compound was cooler. FYI also a $6 fan that draws 1?20th of an amp or very low. keeps it cold as ice. 97.4 on the dead center of quantum board and 96.7 on dead center of heat sink. there is a $6 dc fan blowing on heat sink. it draws less than 1?10th amp. i will build cases if i cant find any empty ones like the photon 180. thank you so much for all the info on the drivers, rik upstate ny o ya this one is a HLG-120H-54A driver. i am running it with the I just a touch down. at full power it was over 120 so i backed it down to 111 or so
@LEDGardener
@LEDGardener 7 лет назад
Great info Rikki, thanks a lot for sharing. I love seeing temperature stats since not many people post them. It never hurts to include a fan and go active - even if the fixture runs fine passive. Cooler diodes = higher voltage = more power = more photons.
@xex2kok
@xex2kok 2 года назад
I don't see any reason you couldn't just drill 2 new holes to mount the heatsink in another spot. I don't like it being off center like that so that is my plan. My only real issue with this 260w kit is they no longer use Mean Well drivers. They are using an Inventronics EUM-240 now. I have heard in a few places those may be decent but the info is scarce at least where I am looking. I would prefer Mean Well for the price they charge...

Your HLG-240H appears different than mine. Yours has North American output wire colors (black and red), mine has brown and blue. Yours has only english writing on it, mine has asian characters/letters in addition to the english text.

Looking at the diagram on meanwell site and on my driver. "Blue Vo-" "Brown Vo+" says the driver itself. Meanwell site says the same, written slightly different, "-V (Blue)" "+V (Brown)".

I made several quantum board these days , I double tested the quantum board, but I found this is not what I want. firstly, not so nice looking, if this is light, this will shame all the lights-makers in the world. Secondly, it is too hot, more than 65 degree, Celsius, come on, too hot for led chips. Thirdly, too much green in the spectrum graph. We also tested the growing , I mean compared with the pink COB, it is much slower, this is our true testing, serious! Come on, you love it?

Null Field this is how I wired mine. Feel free to wire yours however you please. The important part is that you match the proper conductors from both wires up, which I stated in no uncertain terms. The colour of the screws themselves could be pink purple and cyan. Use common sense and match them and you’re good.
