In 2017, my mother and I accompanied my father as he returned to Laos for the first time. It was his first visit to the country since he left as a Hmong war refugee (Secret War) back in 1975. One of his goals during our visit was to find and reunite with his long lost cousin. The journey would not be an easy one. After days of searching, he managed to find his cousin and reunite with him. A touching and heart warming story.

Wow. I have high respect for his wife and son. I am speechless and cry with happy tears at the same times because most of us left our loves one behind. I hope someday I will find my siblings. I left my family since I was two days old.

This is very touching. I’m happy for your father to have found his family and for you to gain more relatives. My parents went back to Laos to visit their old village and where they grew up and it’s all jungles and graves now. War is such a disease and the innocent pays the price.

Amen! Only the elite and rich people profit from war, that’s why they push for war! Look at the Ukraine war, Russians and Ukrainians suffer. Only the big corporations and elite profit from the war. Normal, innocent people always suffer from it.

Thank you for the video. Like many Hmong, we all share similar family stories and history. After the fall of Laos, my father made the long and dangerous trip to Thailand on foot, swimming across the Mekong River into freedom. He had to leave his family behind. After 15 years in the US, he was able to sponsor his mother, brother and sister. Sadly his father passed away in the mid 80s, so I never got to know my grandfather. My grandmother passed away about a year ago but at least she was able to live the last 25+ years with family. Anyway, we the current generation of Hmong must continue sharing our family stories and history. We are here today because of the sacrifices made by those before us.

Looks like you got a good experience from all of this. I'm glad. Most people whom goes overseas without a good guide usually ends up bumping into unwanted behavior or end up being lucky enough not to experience anything crazy. The old generation of Hmong tourist especially the bad ones are slowly weeding out. OGs use to go over there and create a bad name for us hmong tourist and those overseas would get use to categorizing all hmong tourist the same.......that we only go over there to take advantage of them. But over the years, I think i see the narrative changing. Especially now that some of the younger hmong generation are making a difference overseas. Soon.....hopefully their will be less of a love and hate gap between hmong Americans, hmong french and those overseas
