Architecture was based on Windsor Castle, for some reason. The stone was jet-black until the 80's, and it looked REALLY grim. The governor then owned a Rolls Royce, which was sometimes parked at the top of the drive. A very brutal place in its time. An old governor once told me that he started his Prison Service career there, after being discharged following WW2, and on his first day, when he walked into the prison reception, the first thing that happened was that he was punched heavily in the face. His assailant subsequently apologised, saying that he had mistakenly taken him for a prisoner.
I was born at 65 Wingate Road Armley in a house, not a hospital. OLD school birth. never knew there was a prison but then I was only 5 when we left for Australia. Love your work please keep it up. Oh, and thanks for stopping by my channel.
Thanks mate. I like Armley as an area. My son stayed there in his first year at Uni. Also, I had some friends there many moons ago where I used to stay so the place always evokes happy memories. I’m really chuffed you’re enjoying the videos - makes it worthwhile 🙂
