In today's video, we'll be looking at a British light cruiser. HMS Ajax, one of the victors of River Plate. A ship that, despite being out of action for two years, saw quite an active service career. From dueling Graf Spee, to fighting off the Italians in night actions.
Her career would be rounded off in more quiet duty, as she never saw the Pacific. Nonetheless, Ajax saw quite a bit of combat for her relatively short career. And she came out the victor each time.

The Leander class were beautiful and graceful ships.

I got to agree with you. It's amazing how in such a short period of time all the navies started building some very good looking ships .

Ajax and her equally good looking classmates Ive always found so easy to imagine on their overseas stations pre-war, flying the flag, and hosting cocktail parties under quarterdeck awnings. Crew in their tropical uniforms, and a smattering of glamorous guests, maybe Noel Coward performing a few numbers on the wardroom piano. Halcyon days before the grimness to come.

Ajax and Warspite should both be alive and serving as museum ships today. I understand the economy of post-war Britain was desperate, but this was very shortsighted of the government of the day. Very sad.

Town of Ajax, Ontario is named after her. It is just east of Toronto.

Victoria BC has perhaps over 10 streets named for RN vessels, starting in the 1870's. British forces liked the naval base at Esquimalt, they called it the best in the PNW, or to add weight to why American forces can't just own everything in the area. * I do not recall a AJAX St. but there is an Exeter , and likely more than 10 other street names from RN vessels,; Plumber, Chatam , Highflyer , a dozen more but you get it. TY to the RN in a permanent gesture.

I once knew an ex sailor who's first ship was HMS Neptune, a Leander class sister to Ajax. It was his first ship when he joined the Navy just before the outbreak of WW2. He was transferred to Destroyers when she was paid off for a refit. It was when she returned to the fleet in the Med that her disastrous sinking occurred (she ran into a mine field and hit 4 mines, one of which blew her stern off) with the loss of 765 of her crew with Norman Walton as her only survivor. He told me that because of Naval tradition, some of her old crew would stay with the ship (as they had certain knowledge of the ship) and as such, he lost a lot of good friends that he never got over.

HMS Ajax was to be sold to Chile, but the British public were outraged that such a historic warship would be in foreign hands. Chile was also on the nose after their naval incursions into British Antarctic territory after the war. Churchill himself intervened to veto the sale and Ajax was scrapped. Chile ended up buying surplus US cruisers of the Brooklyn class. Britiain did sell cruisers Ceylon and Newfoundland to arc rival Peru though.

HMS Ajax dis not carry the remaining crew from the Graf Spee from South America, she was a Light Cruiser not a passenger ship. HMS Ajax escorted the Passenger Liner Highland Monarch who arrived in Rio De Janeiro 20 Jan 1946, sailing and arriving Hamburg 4th March. The Highland Monarch also carried the crew of the German vessel SS Tacoma which Uruguay had seized.

lt would have been informative if this video had discussed the details of the 1000 pound bomb hit on "Ajax." Normally, a ship of this class would not survive the damage from such ordnance. This reason "Ajax" was not destroyed was due to the failure of the bomb to explode.

Ajax definitely lived up to her namesake Greek hero. It would have been perfect if she had survived long enough to participate in the movie of her most famous action like Achilles and Cumberland did.

HMNZS Achilles. I must add at the River Plate, she was HMS Achillies but was crewed by the New Zealand Division of the Royal Navy. Achilles was eventually transferred to the Royal New Zealand Navy on its creation later in the War.
