HMS Illustrious has seen her lengthy career come to an end, as she was towed out of Portsmouth harbour. Crowds gathered on the dockside, to wave goodbye to the almighty ship, as she headed for a Turkish scrapyard. The 22,000-tonnne ship, affectionately known as ‘’Lusty’’, was formally decommissioned in August 2014 after 32 years of service.

What a sad end to a great ship. We should have kept it in service with a flight of harriers until HMS Queen Elizabeth/Prince of Wales are commissioned.

I'm still annoyed that the RN did us (Australia) out of an aircraft carrier by reneging on their deal to sell the Invincible thanks to the Falklands war.
@mark-1rc502
@mark-1rc502 7 лет назад
Deevo037 Yeah perhaps but I think it was just too old to keep , it would of needed a Major overhaul Like Strip it to the bare frame , New Engines , New Electrics all the leaky pipes need replacing , modern Radars Weapon systems etc , it realistically wasn't economically viable .

Just so you chaps know, HMS Hermes is in India right now and there is a campaign going on to save her and bring her back to the UK as a museum ship.
@RF590KG84
@RF590KG84 3 года назад
You have to say she looked no less effective and efficient going to the breakers as the day she was launched, which is a great testament to the designers and the people who maintained her. I don't think you can pay a bigger compliment really. She looks just as good as the latest LPH type vessels entering service now around the world, better in many respects really.

It is quite sad to see an aircraft carrier named after one of my favourite WWII aircraft carrier going to the scrap her but she suffered the same date as the World War II illustrious who was scrapped in the back end of the 1950s after she was sold to India she had a long life and I hope in the future we get another aircraft carrier named illustrious but for now I just wish we could have kept it

The guy at 3.29 said that there is nothing like serving on an aircraft carrier. I would totally agree. As a Bootneck in the 1960's I served a complete commission on board H.M.S. Centaur, a light fleet carrier of about 27 thousand tons displacement. I really loved it, and of course that was the last decade of the daily issue of pusser's rum. Happy days, with some epic runs ashore of course. The only duty that was a real pig of a job was 4 months watch keeping as lifebuoy ghost at sea, and Cpl. of the gangway when tied up alongside. Lifebuoy ghost involved pacing up and down the quarter deck for four hours, and you weren't allowed to sit down, smoke or read a book. The middle watch was the killer, you didn't see a soul for the whole four hours. Cpl. of the gangway in harbour was easy by comparison.

What a drag. Given how many former RN frigates & destroyers are in service in South America, and Pakistan I think, I wonder if Chile, or Brazil, or Peru maybe, considered buying this ship, as a helicopter/Marine Amphibious type vessel.
