Thanks for another video on the HMS Pegasus, look forward to the next installment. Also you blog and videos on planking, especially the ones for the HMS Pegasus help a great deal, still not to sure about the measuring part. Thanks again David
My pleasure! I'm glad you like it! Measurement is also part of intuition and how planks are asked to bend... So the only thing you can accurately calculate is the number of strakes! And every time to calculate the width of the planks on each bulkhead, after gluing 3-5 planks on the hull...
Your selfmade gunports are looking excellent! No comparison to before and worth every minute you spent building! Your videos are amazing, and I'm looking forward to see the next episode(s) 🙂
Looks absolutely amazing! I started watching your videos to learn about rigging, but have learned so much more. Thanks for sharing. Happy days and model on! 😎
Was für ein hervorragendes Video . Das Zuschauen ist sehr entspannend und gleichzeitig faszinierend. Vielen Dank für die Einblicke Alles Gute viele Grüsse Frank
Really an educational video Olha. At first I thought, mhhhh what imprecise sections for the gunports, but in the next shot the aha effect came. I will include your type of gunport construction in my next construction project. I'm looking forward to the next video. Tank you!
This is again an amazing work done Olha !! I really admire it and learn every time I watch a video from you. It looks much better like this indeed, was totally worth doing all that work for a stunning result !!
Stunning work, as always. I realize that your videos encompass hours of work, but I find them incredibly relaxing to watch. I am just as fascinated by the tools that you use as I am with the actual construction. Do you have a source for the various metal blocks and sanders that you use?
Thank you very much! Yes, these videos sometimes consist of a month's time due to the fact that you have to wait until the glue dries, but the actual work in hours is about 80 hours ... All these aluminum blocks are homemade sanders, some of which I bought as scrap metal...
Hello again Dear Olha, I use a chopper to cut that thin wood at lenght. North West Short Line sell these things and they are working very well. Hope you can use my tip. And for now LONG LIVE UKRAINE. See you next time. Gerard
Saludos 🇲🇽
Olha, have you ever looked into the Lee Valley Miniature Hand Tool set? I have em and while many are kinda specific use, I use the mini plane and chisels a ton for work like this.
Hay Luke how they make this ship by hand it's incredible how they doing by hand see this,Handmade wooden ship manufacturing in Pakistan with our the tools we have they do it by hand see you 👍
What a great job you did on those gunports and planking. What are the smaller ports next to the 3 gunports are they scuppers, to clear the upper deck of water?
Olha, what would be your thoughts about enlarging the plywood gunport pattern (part 32) openings BEFORE attaching them to the bulkheads & then gluing in the framing once the gunport pattern is applied to the hull? Seems like it might be easier to do all the marking/cutting on a mat with a scalpel rather than on the ship with a Dremel & cutting disc...
But you will have to glue very carefully - because it is plywood and it can easily break or at least bend. Even without enlarging the ports, it was difficult to do in the bow - so I just sanded the plywood down to almost its full thickness...
Olha, now that you've widened the bulwarks, will you still be able to use the kit's planksheer rails? Or will you be making new ones? Also, will you be adding the fixed blocks in the bulwarks as per David Antscherl's TFFM Vol. II? (single sheave aft of gunport #3 & double sheave fore of gunport #5; see pgs.125, 205). Thanks, Olha!!! 👍
I use the planks included. Maybe I'll change the wood on the deck but mostly use all the materials from the kit! As for the blocks, I'm still debating what to do with them. The drawing from the kit does not has them at all and because of the brass decoration from the kit - it becomes a problem to install them in the right place...
I used a 2,3 mm plank, which after sanding is about 2mm (this is described in the subtitles). The thickness can be 2 or less - the visible part is only 1 mm...
You must remove them in any case according to the instructions. And glue the planks to the plywood without toptimbers at all... But it's not in scale - so I added the amount of work and installed my toptimbers...
Hi Olha, love your videos so much I've jumped into the wooden ship modeling hobby. Even to the extent of joining the NRG. You are an inspiration to many and I fhank you. Question, what brand of long nosed clamps are those you're using and where can I find them? Bill St. John Panama City, FL.
Thank you very much! I'm glad you like it! This is a "Wolfcraft B3431 Micro Tip Spring Clamp" from Amazon. I will not insert the link because RU-vid will block the comment. I will write this in the description below the video.
Very nice upgrade, Ohla! Can you please state the dimensions of the lumber you used for the gunports & internal bulwark supports? Also, after sanding the internal lumber pieces, how far did the wood extend from the plywood bulwark strip after sanding? (dimension again, please!). THANK YOU!!! 💯👍🏆
Thank you very much! I show the measurements at the beginning of the video with a caliper, because I bought these planks in the US and they are imperial in size, and I still think in the metric system of measurement))) So there are very strange dimensions. And I just chose from what is available to get the right thickness - then I polished the errors! I used planks of something like 2,33x2,33 mm and 2,33x1,5 mm... If you use slightly thicker planks for gunports - they will be easier to sand than thicker toptimbers...
@@OlhaBatchvarov Thank you so much, Ohla. You're so talented & I appreciate you taking the time to educate those of us who are still learning. You're the best!!! 😊💯❤
Your modeling skills are fantastic, Olha! I want to build the HMS Fly of Amati. Can you recommend a book about building the hull and the rigging of this sloop?
Thank you very much! FLY is the sister ship of PEGASUS. Yes, there is a whole collection (IV volumes) of books and a practicum by David Antscherl and his colleague Greg Herbert about this Swan Class Sloops published by Sea Watch Books
Hello Olha, your patience and skill are inspiring. Are you making models for clients? If you have not already done so, have a look on Utube at "Barney Hayter" and Phillip Reed's ship models, they too are inspiring! Good luck.
Hello again Olha, I don't mean to be a nuisance, but your Model Shipways US Frigate Confederacy seems to be different from the model advertised by Model Shipways, which they describe as an Admiralty Model. Patently the model you were making is not an "Admiralty Model". Do they make two different versions of the same ship? Sorry to be a pain.
