Britain's latest aircraft carrier has set sail from Rosyth dockyard to begin sea trials for the first time. HMS Prince of Wales, the sister ship of HMS Queen Elizabeth, will be tested in areas including speed and propulsion over the coming weeks. The ship's crew will also be put through its paces, taking part in flood and fire safety exercises. We went to see the carrier in Rosyth just before it left the dockyard...

I'm an old American cavalry corporal and lifelong military historian. I've read in a bit about naval policy, but I can't claim I'm an expert. I'm pleased that the RN is back in the aircraft carrier business. When the PW finally puts to sea operationally, the UK will be able to project power where she needs it, wherever and whenever that is. And God knows the USN could use the help. The UK intervenes with a softer foot than the US does and there are situations where that's a very valuable talent. I will say this, however: the money to get the QE class afloat had to come from somewhere in a MoD budget already feeling the pinch after 10 years of active operations in the Middle East. The British Army was shrunk to provide that money, as was the RN's destroyer fleet. And those units will be needed should the carriers be required to deploy anywhere in a serious way. Long serving and proud battalions have been amalgamated into 'super-regiments' and now only a couple hundred troops in company bearing a lineage that once took entire regiments to hold up are taught the deeds of their grandfathers. There is a sadness in that. This is a proud time for the RN, and well-earned. But like most proud things in life, it came with some sacrifices. Hopefully those sacrifices will bear out. To the officers and men of the HMS Prince of Wales [pennant R-09], fair winds, following seas, and my sincere respects.

The US and UK are the only countries in the world with more than one supercarrier. Russia and China have one each of something similar which first came into service in 1991 and aren't really aircraft carriers in the modern sense at all. It's a pity France had to pull out of the UK, France plans for a shared fleet. The British capability depends on allied support because operating these ships is extraordinarily expensive but the ties between the US and UK military are already very strong.

As I learned from the channel "Drachinifel" warships have two loaded states, as you infer the "war" load and the "normal" peace time load. Remember, these ships are not one-trick ponies like U.S fleet carriers. They are designed to be flexible, in future years either of these ships may be on the Caribbean station, being loaded with F35's would not be much use.

"Once the carriers are taking part in operations, the question is: does the Royal Navy have enough ships to escort and protect them?" NO. Absolutely not. In no way, shape or form. The Royal Navy's surface escort and submarine fleets have been gutted by years of idiotic defence cuts. The Royal Fleet Auxiliary's support capability has also been reduced far too far as well. Six air defence destroyers? That means two available for operations at any one time. 13 frigates? That means 4 or possibly 5 available for operations at any one time. Eight attack submarines? That means two or three available for operations at any one time. So how are two air defence destroyers supposed to protect aircraft carrier, amphibious assault ships and fleet train at the same time? Two ships in three places at once? Oops. How are four or five frigates supposed to stop enemy submarines having a field day with the aircraft carrier, amphibious assault ships or fleet train? One for the carrier, one for the amphibious assault ships, one for the fleet train and one or two more roving around? Hardly a particularly credible threat to enemy submarines. With two attack submarines how are we supposed to credibly threaten the enemy fleet, perform insertion missions and protect our own forces at the same time? Also if all our surface combatants are tied up protecting carrier, amphibious assualt ships and fleet train (at least partially) what about merchant shipping elsewhere in the world? How much mischief could Iran get up to if the fleet is deployed off North Korea?

That's what happens when you waste your military budget on helping the USA fight pointless wars in the middle east
@davidpnewton
@davidpnewton 5 лет назад
Although your comment comes from a position of profound ignorance, ironically you are partially correct. The running down of (already inadequate) ammunition stocks and other spares and logistical support that took place during the wars of the last decade of the 20th century and the first decade and a half of the 21st century has caused immense problems. However stocks of small arms ammunition and food etc are fairly easy to build up quickly again. What is NOT easy to deal with is the hours put on the bigger ticket equipment, wearing it out. Why has the RAF shrunk so much? Partially because aircraft ran out of flying hours due to being on active service so much. Ditto the fixed wing complement of the Fleet Air Arm disappearing. That's also why we have so pitifully few tanks now. It's also why we have such manpower retention problems. We were fighting on a partial wartime footing and tempo of operations with a military that was inadequately funded for peacetime. People were deployed again and again and again and again. The welfare issues were and indeed still are tragic.
@MattCellaneous
@MattCellaneous 4 года назад
Don't worry, those carriers are to help us(US) in our carrier rotation for NATO commitments. And they're very much appreciated. So they'll slide into NATO naval groups with multinational forces protecting them. The rest of your Navy can do your own thing. Having those aircraft carriers are huge help to the us(US) and NATO commitments. So basically you can keep your the rest of your ships for what you need and slide in your carrier's to help us with NATO patrols and take the load off our carriers, and and when the carriers are performing that task they'll be in charge of a NATO carrier task group of multinational ships.

I hope this is the beginning of the re-equipping of the Royal Navy to bring her up to world standards. For far too long our military capability has been decimated by successive governments preferring to spend public money on such things as welfare benefits over the defence of the realm and our interests. Sadly though, the increase in building ships for the RN will bring them up to only 2013 levels, less one ship from that time. We not only need more ships, especially post Brexit, but more aircraft and tanks and other hardware for the army. Including comms, IT, up to date defence radars and so on. And, most importantly, we need to increase the manpower of the armed forces and improve retention. Unfortunately, in our diverse, multi-cultural society, conscription would be an almost impossibility.

@Stevie0445 I believe in a society with a social conscience that takes care of the vulnerable. I do not believe in a socialist society, which we have, that rewards the feckless, lazy and undeserving (plenty of those where I live). I do not believe in a socialist society that sets out to make people reliant on the generosity of the state, and which also ensures their voting base by that dependency. The whole tax and welfare system needs radical reform and welfare should never be allowed to be a lifestyle choice but a safety net.. Maybe if people are fit and able to work and work is available it should be a choice of don't work, don't eat. Social housing should never be allocated to foreigners and no benefits should be paid to them until they have paid into the system for a specified time period. And that includes health care unless for emergencies. Maybe then we could afford a more powerful military capability. And, realise defence spending employs people in just about every profession; trade and craft there is. It also spins off into the private sector which creates more worthwhile jobs and apprenticeships etc.
@davidpnewton
@davidpnewton 5 лет назад
"so you place the purchase of tanks and weaponry above the support of your fellow countrymen that the welfare state ultimately provides?" Yes. Without the armed forces there would be no country for the welfare state to exist in. National defence is a far, far higher priority for a government than welfare spending. Non-governmental entities can deal with many welfare issues. No non-governmental entity can deal with national defence.

That would truly allow the Royal Navy to have a carrier permanently at sea, with another in refit and the third being readied and conducting training. Of course, having the organic hulls on hand to provide the escort and support group would also be a good idea. At minimum, though, it's good to see another Royal Navy flattop.

You don't want to see poverty and inhuman activities stamped out by rapidly modernising and developing countries aspiring to have the same luxuries Britain has thanks to two centuries of taking others resources and making billions from it? Guess you don't mind when UK farmers lose 60% of their income thanks to foreign aid from the European Union. But that's what you get from a jumped up nationalist who sees bad and blames others not himself.

It's officially to increase survivability and allow optimum placing of both aircraft handling and ship handling facilities, but tbh a lot has to do with the propulsion plant uptakes as we ducked the cost of making them nuclear powered. That being said, we're not a superpower (neither is France as the CdeG illustrates) and the decision allowed two of these still highly capable 70,000 tonners (more at full load displacement and anyone crediting the 65k std design figure knows squat about building warships) for not too much over half the cost of the (admittedly incomparable) 'Ford'.

They are capable of carrying that number if the need arises, but the Royal Navy only plan on operating up to 36 F-35B. They designed the ship around that number, but scaled the ship to a size to allow for a high sortie rate to be achieved with the extra space.

Excellent, but it should not be forgotten that we scrapped three carriers and built two. However capable they are, ships cannot be in two places at once. We need a third light carrier of Invincible Class size. This would be invaluable for smaller missions where the Queen Elizabeth Class would be unsuitable. Sadly this is unlikely to happen.

We lost it in the past where great shipyards, especially in the NE become North Sea rig builders. The North has people crying for jobs in this industry but more so the proven areas to produce and as well as Scotland NI also. We need to build our Navy again on home soil. Last but not least, how pissed off I am one of these great boats was not named ARK ROYAL.......... It should have been a given as respect to RN. It's good to see our British allies finally putting forth some kind of naval power. However, their carriers are not super carriers as defined by the US. Their tonnage is less than half of a true super carrier like to US Ford class carriers and far less capable. That British Naval Officer saying that their destroyers protect US carriers and that it would be nice for our destroyers to do the same is a little insulting. Of course we will protect your carriers but deploying one of your destroyers in your waters to "protect" one of our carriers which already has two or three US destroyers and a couple submarines already defending it in a Carrier Battlegroup along with air assets is nothing but a token gesture.
@Benjd0
@Benjd0 5 лет назад
It depends on the definition of supercarrier, there's not real rule about it, but the QE class are often described as that. She's quite a bit larger than half the size of a Ford class though, in terms of overall flight deck area she's not that far off at all. Not sure how asking to return the favour and having a US destroyer help out is insulting in the slightest. British destroyers have protected US carrier groups in places like the middle east in the past, at times operating as the primary escort.

@@Bushcraft-xz6xd Maybe the Royal navy could fit the Queen Elizabeth Carrier and the prince of wales carrier with Sea Ceptor or the Rolling Airframe Missile (RAM) Although RAM lacks the range or guidance sophistication of Sea Ceptor or Aster but it can destroy incoming missiles further from the ship than Phalanx. It would be nice to see Battleships used again. Cause although they are massive and slow they can be deadly.
