The Cu Chi Tunnels are a vast, underground network of tunnels located in Vietnam, approximately 40 miles outside of Ho Chi Minh City (formerly known as Saigon). The construction of the Cu Chi Tunnels started in 1948, during the French Indochina War, and was completed by the end of the Vietnam War in 1975.
The tunnels were built and maintained by the Viet Cong, the South #vietnamese communist guerrilla movement. They were used as a means of communication, transportation, and living quarters for the Viet Cong. Cu Chi Tunnels are estimated to have been over 200 kilometers in length and up to 3 levels deep. The tunnels were also connected to underground hospitals, kitchens, meeting halls, and munitions factories. The tunnels were designed to be difficult to detect and entry points were often hidden under homes and businesses. The tunnels were also used to hide villagers during attacks, and to avoid detection by the enemy.
The tunnels were well-ventilated, despite the cramped quarters, and were designed with a series of traps and booby-traps to protect the occupants from enemy soldiers.
