As a San Diegan, I’ve spent a lot of my adulthood frequenting its beaches. San Diego has many beautiful beaches, one of which is Black’s Beach, located in La Jolla. Besides the fact that it is the only clothing-optional beach in San Diego, Black’s Beach is also known for having one of the sketchiest beach accesses in the area. The beach access for Black’s Beach is the popular, unofficial Ho Chi Minh Trail. Ho Chi Minh Trail, also known as the Saigon Trail or La Jolla Trail, is a very challenging, yet wonderful short hike that snakes through a dramatic canyon. In fact, this hike is the best part of Black’s Beach. It has also been used by surfers to get to the surf below since the 1960s. Ho Chi Minh Trail (Saigon Trail) is named after the infamous jungle trail the Viet Cong used during the Vietnam War.

Ho Chi Minh Trail should only be used by the most adventurous hikers. Even though it is short, it is rated difficult and for good reasons. This is a fairly technical trail that requires a lot of rock scrambling and maneuvering through slippery, narrow ledges. The sandstone gets extra slippery when wet so make sure to avoid doing this hike after recent rain. Also, make sure to wear hiking shoes with great traction, and put those sandals away until you get down to the beach. This trail is very treacherous. There are at least 100 rescues a year with quite a number of fatalities!

Excellent prep! We almost took this hike today, and am glad we turned back since we didn't have the right shoes. Great film work!

Thank you Andrew! Sounds like you made the right choice! Things can get really slippery down there. Glad you didn't force it and get hurt! 😁👍

Wow, I used to walk this trail in the 1960's. The erosion that has happened in the intervening decades is jaw dropping.

Thats pretty crazy to hear! Was that slot canyon there back then? It was probably a lot safer then as well.

I wish people that do adventure and tourism videos would talk more about where the parking is, how much it is and alternatives when it’s full. GPS often takes you to the entrance of a trail or destination doesn’t tell you where the parking is so then you drive around wasting a lot of time.

Hey, we actually covered those details in-depth in our blog. Some locations unfortunately won't have alternate parking options. The link is in the description. I hope it helps. thatadventurelife.com/2022/03/30/ho-chi-minh-trail-the-most-dangerous-beach-access-in-la-jolla-sd/

just for information, this trail ends on the city side of the beach which is not clothing optional, you need to head north to the state beach which begins below the glider port if you want to take off your clothing

The slot part looks cool but narrow. Can someone 6' 220 get through easily?

A big landslide just took place there so I wonder if the trail is still there?

According to alltrails, someone did it 12 hours ago and said that it was in good shape. It must have been a different part of the cliff.

I was wearing Nike Air Force 1 down the trail. I had to move down in a way like sitting on a slide in much part of the trail (it seemed so dumb). At the 90% of it, luckily me and the other 4 trailers decided it was too slipery to go ahead and we helped each other go back. I'm glad to make the right choice and be able to type now. But it hurts seeing college students finishing it easily with their NIKEs.
@LiveThatAdventure
@LiveThatAdventure Год назад
A lot of it depends on the trail conditions. If it is wet it is going to be like ice. It's always best to wear the grippiest shoes possible. Even with it hiking shoes Vy slipped and did the splits.

I think naked people have some deep sense of their own animalistic nature. We share this planet with other animals after all. In many ways we are the same, and yet we are not.

@@LiveThatAdventure Im sorry. Heres what I meant : Please dont mislead. It's not as dangerous as you make it out to be.
@LiveThatAdventure
@LiveThatAdventure Год назад
@@YuzukiEba no offence but we don't feel like we are overselling it. If you are a skilled hiker it shouldn't be all that hard, but a lot of people do get hurt there. Several needed to be air lifted out. That last part can be really slippery as you can see from Vy falling. It may not be as sketchy as something like Angels Landing and hikes like that, but it does have it's own dangers.
