I'm in the "nothing-at-all" club. However the idea of a Hob Hub sounds pretty intriguing! Great video!!

Nice! Thanks! Yeah I do like a good hob hub, it's the command centre of the kitchen!

Hob! 1- I love the idea of it being more social, not facing a wall. 2- I'm in a condo where venting to the outside is not a possibility, so I have freedom of where to place the (recirculating) extractor. But I'm not a big fan of the extractor options.

I’m in the ‘island sink’ team. At least that’s what I’ve committed to in my refurb, hope I don’t regret it. I’m ok with occasional water splashes, but the thought of finding on the living room floor what would normally end up on the hob splashback is gross.

Yes, you definitely don't want that pasta sauce splashing on the living room floor! Sink on the island is a great option (always pros and cons). It's whatever works best for you!

Great video! For me it’s that darn extractor fan! Just not sure I like my options on that island.

How about if there is a big door orwindow to the exterior nearby? Is it still necessary or could I survive without one?

Thanks! Really helpful. I am looking at an island that is 70cm deep with the hob and then a lowered 40cm breakfast area behind for seating / eating. That would be 110cm in total, does that work with your recommendations?

Never would i get a sink in the island. It looks nice but it’s a complete mess when washing up pots and pans. Leaving them out to dry and they pile up. Does not look nice at all.

Team hob. But go induction!

i have an existing gas down draft on kitchen island that needs to be replaced by new one. any recommendations. we are a large family and cook almost 5 days a week. and most of the time i use all 4 burners. when we make chapaatis/rotis it gives ot alot of smoke.

How has your experience been having the gas range in the kitchen island with children? We are a family of four and are on the fence about changing the gas range location (currently on the peninsula).

Get a induction hob, boils water faster than a kettle

I'm more on sink team. First of all i don't think people wants to get any distractions when they're cooking (of course or the food might get burn), second cooktop on the island means it doesn't have any backsplashes - so the oil probably would splash on the countertop (then we also use this countertop to eat) and last the hood will disturb the aesthetic's look of the island because it'll stand in the middle.

A lot of new hobs now have integrated downdraft extractors that not only don't affect the aesthetics, but in many cases are superior to traditional hood-type extractors. You make a good point regarding splashbacks, but if your island is big enough, there's plenty of space on all sides of the hob to wipe clean what the extractor doesn't catch. And don't forget that the alternative is splashback from the sink

I am in the "nothing-at-all" or "all-in" team. The kitchen's "working zone" is a "sink - chopping - hob". They all come together. There is no sense to split them from a functionality point of view.

Every kind of downdraft fan is generally ineffective at removing pollution from cooking, and the really high overhead extractor fans are also functionally useless. As such, if you actually cook rather than merely using your kitchen as a symmetrical display piece, I don't recommend island cooktops.

I'd put an induction on the island just to warm up soup, if any.

This is really more of a "what extractor" issue than an "island or backwall" issue. I agree about hood-type extractors. I am 6'4" and am old-fashioned enough to want to see what I'm cooking which means the extractor hood has to be high enough as to be virtually pointless. For me, the latest downdraft extractors (eg Bora) are not only the only effective option, but open up the island or backwall option..
