Use to live in Tasmania before my family move to the mainland in the mid 60’s. Loved Hobart sad they closed down the passenger train service.

2:10 - Trolleybuses had replaced all of the trams in Hobart by 1960, but they would only have another 6 years of service before being replaced by buses in 1968.

I appreciate the typical stock music in the background, ranging from cheerful and upbeat, to soothing. Pretty much a requirement for such promotional films in those years, along with the informative narrator.

The sailing footage in this video is wonderful! It was taken at the 1958 Hobart Regatta. Two of the Moths shown (308 Solo and 750 Calypso) still exist.

It's amazing that the overall looking of the building in Hobart doesn't get changed a lot.

Which is why the proposed high rise should never go ahead, it will look ridiculous and everyone will hate it. The idiots who want to build it have dollar signs in their eyes, but only a few cents in their big heads. Modernize Hobart, but not with high rise.

@@kerosene4751 coming from melbourne, the more human scale skyline in hobart is one of the city's best qualities. skyscrapers would be a serious mistake and ruin the feeling of the place. please do all you can as tasmanians to protest against such development, because you have a very special capital city in hobart

It’s amazing, even as a 21 year old today looking at these clips I can pretty easily recognise many locations in the city simply because of the buildings. Elizabeth Street, Murray Street down to Morrison Street, heading to Salamanca Place. Among many other places. It’s one of the cities best features!

Oh my God. How lucky to be able to watch this old video. Still it holds up the perspective of a modern Hobart City till this date, though a few more modern buildings have sprung up.

Hi Angus. I'm reading Michael Palin's 'Erebus', in which he recounts Alison Alexander taking him down to the Derwent below Government House to inspect Ross Cove, where Erebus and Terror moored during their visit to Van Diemen's Land in 1840, I went to have a look, but it doesn't come up on Google maps! Do you know it?

We visited Hobart in 2021 for one week holiday during a COVID break and we had a fantastic adventure in a jet boat to Bruny island with its seals, dolphins and fairy penguins. The Art Gallery is magnificent as is Hobart wine.Hobart has a wonderful botanic gardens and ANZAC bush retreat. We loved the wharf seafood restaurants and markets.

Anyone know the name of the aircraft carrier?
@LibrariesTasmania
@LibrariesTasmania 3 года назад
Hi Pete, we don't have anything in our records identifying the aircraft carrier but I think it's likely that it is the HMS Albion. I found this by some general internet searching using the number on it's bridge, R07. More research on authoritative sources would be needed to be completely sure, but the number does match the Albion and it seems that it was in Australia sometime in the period 1961 and 62.
