I tell ya Tim in my opinion the planting tec. of that era of planters is the best. We have a six row and we always get a great stand. I still have Dad's 8-row 7000 planter, it's overkill to plant my sweetcorn with! I'd rather find a JD 71 flex planter unit, they have the drive wheel on the row unit and use disk openers like the 7000. Using a plate in sweetcorn isn't that critical, and it keeps everything simple...

You have great soil Tim. Here where I live it's clay unless you are in bottom land. When we farmed we plowed in the fall and used a disc harrow in the spring. My grandfather had a saying that if you plowed wet ground in the spring you would roll clods the rest of the year. He was right. Now everyone no-till's. I've found out that with our clay you can roto-till the soil too fine and the ground will crust over impeding the seed coming up. Thanks for your videos. I appreciate really them.

Looks to be high clay content. Easy test:moisten with water and work with your hands: if it feels slimy it's high in clay.
@tylermartin4726
@tylermartin4726 4 года назад
Just need to do a ribbon test. Get soil, moisten (like you said), roll it into a ball, then press it with your index finger and thumb into a ribbon. If the ribbon gets more than about 2ish inches it’s pretty high clay content. If you drag your thumb on the ribbon after you make it and it’s shiny, it’s clay and if it’s feathery looking it’s more so a clay-loam.

@@tylermartin4726 i know it's now the subject of the video. But what amendments do you add to lessen the %% of clay. Iowa, my yard has high clay too.
@tylermartin4726
@tylermartin4726 4 года назад
John Jacob JinglehimerSchmidt to improve drainage in your yard and the health of your grass, maybe try aerating it and then top dressing it with sand. This is a common practice used by golf courses to improve rooting and grass health. After top dressing it with sand you use a broom to help the sand into the holes produced by the aerator.

it's a very strange soil, iv'e never seen anything like it, i wrote to tim : your soil seems to have large sand grains, or large volcanic grains, that would explain not powdering. i don't know why it stays wet, it must be wicking up from below, or your not much above river height ?

I plant usually 10+ rows of sweet corn - each row is about 60 feet long. I use an earthway-precision-garden-seeder. Rows can be spaced to 30+ inches and I can plant all the rows in about five minutes. For those who want a good planter and save some money consider those - about $125... The soil you have there sure looks heavy. Best wishes on a good harvest, Tim...
@TractorTimewithTim
@TractorTimewithTim 4 года назад
I am not happy with the results from the earth way planter. 1) it does not do a good job of seed placement. You may get 0,1,2 or 3 seeds in each ‘cup’ in the plate. 2) there is no way to change the population. 3) the wimpy ‘chain’ is useless as a covering implement. Probably the best you can do for $100, but not very impressive.
@GunsmithLC
@GunsmithLC 4 года назад
@@TractorTimewithTim I've had a similar model for nearly 30 years.. I found that, by slowing down forward speed and keeping the hopper at least 1/4 full, I get quite consistent plantings.. If by chance an extra seed drops down it's not often and when plants get about 4" high it's easy to see any that need yanking out.. For the cost - it's worked well so far.. I also use it for snap beans etc..

Farmers put nitrogen on during planting as a pre-emerge fertilizer then side dress when the corn reaches the proper growth stage when the corn needs the nitrogen the most. Nitrogen is highly mobile in the soil so it’s best to wait because if you you apply it all now everything the newly germinated corn can’t use will wash through the soil column and no longer be available when it needs it (coming from someone who lives on a 2300 acre corn and soybean farm and has a bachelors in agriculture (mix of agronomy and at business)).

On 30 inch rows it is super easy to figure out spacing... to count final population once the corn is up and out of the ground you measure out 17'6" and count the plants and multiply by 1000 to get the final stand population. so the same can be done in the other direction.

The planter is nice and not overkill because it's tough and precise. I don't agree with the tiller usage for seedbed preparation. It dries the soil quite a lot. Maybe you could try using a spring-tine harrow. It won't be a beautiful finish on the first pass but it keeps a lot of moisture in the soil. Thanks for the work you put in making these videos!

Hi Tim. If you want to either dress up or level the top of your tilled soil maybe try either a power rake or a drag harrow. I’ve used both. Depending on how soft and or moist the soil is one might work better than the other. Either ay your not going deep into your tilled soil. The drag harrow is easier though just hook it up to your utv or atv and it’s faster.
