@@rhace1491 I agree with you that businesses should be allowed to express their religious beliefs within reason (including publishing those ads), but the video literally discusses how Hobby Lobby has been a hostile place for Jewish people. In addition, I've done my own research, and Hobby Lobby has both advocated for the legalization of discrimination against LGBT employees based on "religious exceptions", and continuously prevented a trans female employee from using the woman's bathroom. That case just went to court, and the employee won unanimously. I have no issue with businesses that are proud of their religious views, but when they use their power and religion to discriminate against others is when I draw the line.

We studied the hobby lobby case while I was in college for my civil rights law class. It was the most complicated, interesting, and debated case. There was no simple answer because of the ACA, First Amendment, the concept of corporate personhood, and the public accomodations issues at play. There were some parts of the decision that were, in my view, correct and some that were disastrously wrong.

@@townfool4682 Corporate personhood is also something that is incredibly hard to avoid in the legal situations where it matters. It isn't a new concept at all either, although corporate person "rights" is somewhat new. It may be a source of ire, but it boils down to the details of what it means to establish a corporation. Even the term "corporation" has as the root of the meaning of the word a "body" ("corpus") showing that was always the intention even when these kind of organizations were originally established in medieval times.
@AaronOfMpls
@AaronOfMpls 3 года назад
@@GlanderBrondurg Yup, partnerships and organizations that kinda act as one body are older than humanity, when you consider how many animals live in groups and make group decisions. Corporations themselves have long been "legal persons" in the sense that they can own property, can enter into contracts, and can sue and be sued. At the same time, they're not "natural persons" (since they're _organizations_ of actual people), so their rights and responsibilities are different. _How_ different is something reasonable people can disagree on in lots of ways.

One thing to note. You stated they raised the minimum wage of all employees in 2020. That is partially true. Unfortunately, this $17 wage is for full time employees. Part time employees only make $11. Both part and full timers received a raise, thankfully. To the disdain of the part timers, the raise was biased heavily towards full timers. As an employee of Hobby Lobby (I worked a year on register and over a year in the frame shop), I have to say I'm impressed with your video. I thought you were very open and non-bias in your reporting. :-) Well done. I can confirm one thing about the pandemic and the employees getting paid. I was there when my store shut down for 2 months, and while we didn't get full pay, my manager personally called me to let me know I would be getting a smaller amount out of the store's emergency fund, which continued for those two months. Based on my personal experience, I'm happy to say that my time with Hobby Lobby was a good and much-needed respite from the horrible jobs/bosses I've had in the past. I know every location/manager is different, but working there with my supportive co-workers and pleasant customers healed a lot of the mental health struggles I had been having (those had gone on or years and were already on the slow upswing, but being at a low-pressure job I liked really boosted my needed reprieve). All this to say, thanks for making this video in a respectful way. Regardless of its controversies, the store as a place to shop and to work has been a huge comfort and blessing to me. I support businesses making choices as to what they sell and how they will run their business, as long as they follow the law. If I don't like their religious or political stances, I can choose to shop elsewhere. This reminds me of the Pride Month pandering of businesses in the US, but the same companies changing their logos and websites did not follow suit in their Middle Eastern markets. These companies were seeking popular approval not standing on principle. Whether or not you like their principles, at least we know where Hobby Lobby stands.

I understand the controversy with them staying open in the pandemic and open really quickly but tbh, them selling stuff for school could not be an understatement. They opened one near my area before the pandemic and it really made things easier. As a student studying architecture at my community college, the amount of times I went there for model supplies or pencils made them a godsend since they were nearby. Yes they weren’t completely essential as I’m sure many people could have ordered stuff on Amazon but juggling muitiple classes and having a store nearby that you know will have what you need freed up some space in my mind that would of went to planning ordering supplies at certain times to make sure I can complete parts or project by their due date. However when the new incoming manager arrived she hired mostly new people to fill the new full time positions. I got the shaft and was given only 11 hours a week even as a CSM (customer service manager). No insurance and 11 hours a week doesn't pay for anything. My dispute with (at least my local) Hobby Lobby is never getting on full time, even after two and a half years working with them. Although I had the job title as Stockman, I only helped stocking anything when the other guys needed a hand. What my actually job was was janitor. Anyhow, it was less about how well you did your job, and more about how close you are to management. I was one of two, maybe three guys, that actually broke a sweat on a regular basis, yet I got passed up for full time employment several times. A couple of them were those that only worked a few months (one was just three months). That's when I gave my notice and left. This was a few months before the whole covid thing. Shortly there after, four of their other best employees quit, as well. Keeping in touch with a couple that still work there, they've said it's a shit show, a joke now. Seeing how they thought me cleaning up some awful messes that nobody in their right mind should cause let along clean up wasn't worth a "full time" status of 35 hours a week, I won't bother working for them again - especially as a janitor.

Hobby Lobby has no obligation to sell Jewish items. Absolutely none. Even if they live in a place where such items would sell, it is their choice what they want to sell. And why would you want a business owned by devout Christians to sell items that would otherwise be in direct contradiction to their beliefs? Freedom of religion plus Capitalism means you can worship AND run your business as you see fit. If someone is offended by the religious or political beliefs of a company or people that own said company, then you have the right to shop elsewhere. Religion and business don't have to be mutually exclusive. Chik-fila is another example of a company that has had controversies over their beliefs yet they are one, if not the most, successful chicken restaurants. So its all about freedom. Freedom to run your company the way you see fit, and on the flip side, the customers have the freedom to shop and spend their money where they want. Its that simple.

They bought it. Their mistake was in not properly investigating the provenance. I cannot think of a case since the 19th century or maybe earlier where a museum was directly involved in the illegitimate removal of an item. But as the ethics behind museum collections have evolved, the necessity of ascertaining the full details behind how a seller came to possess an item, and any previous transactions back to the initial "discovery" (for lack of a better term) has become more important. And yet there are still properties being bought and sold that were stolen from Jewish owners by the Nazi's, as well as items out of the Middle East with dubious histories. But there is a difference between stealing something, and purchasing something that was, or may have been, stolen.

Someone once said it isn't about red or blue, it's about green and they were right. In my business you sit down with customers one on one for a period of time, and since it is financial services, you get ALOT of political talk from customers. People have nothing better to do than whine about everything. I don't shop at Hobby Lobby and I'm not religious, but they can have whatever beliefs they want. If you don't like it, mind your own business and buy your stuff somewhere else.

Nah. He didn't go into it, but the artifacts the Greene family had were purchased by Hobby Lobby, not the family. They were stored in Hobby Lobby warehouses. When they were fined, Hobby Lobby paid the fine. It's not whining to call them out for supporting theft and smuggling. Calling someone out for committing international crimes isn't whining, it's part of Hobby Lobby's punishment. Besides, what you call whining, I call somebody exercising their first amendment right to spread awareness. Hobby Lobby is a terrible company full of terrible people. I won't shop there, but I'll also "whine" about it.

I disagree. I think there can be legitimate reasons why government or regulators would want to shut down a business, at least temporarily. Take adulterated foodstuffs for one. That would get a restaurant or food manufacturing facility closed, at least until the contamination was dealt with.

"Why should your employer have any say in those matters" I mean, if they are being forced by the government to pay into a health insurance plan, they have a financial stake. Not saying right or wrong, and I think it is a pretty good argument for divorcing Health insurance from employment, along with not having to change providers/pharmacies to fit a new Insurance plan just for getting a new job.

They actually the the option of telling the government 'no, we will not pay for it' and the state would have picked up the cost. But they refused to allow that either. That is what made their decision so controversial and spiteful, it was not even their financial interest at stake, they just did not want people they had control over to access the pills.

I have a financial stake in my workplace healthcare plan as well; should I have the right to dictate the healthcare services of my coworkers based on their perceived healthy habits? Most people would say no, so I don't see why the employer would get to either. Hobby Lobby is a huge multi-state company, not some 5 person small business, and their health insurance plan is discriminatory to employees that don't share their strict religious beliefs, and creates scenarios such as "a woman who was raped and impregnated would not be able to have their emergency contraception covered by their work insurance plan", which is also discriminatory to women. Two, women have a right to abortion early in the pregnancy as protected by Roe vs. Wade, and emergency contraception absolutely fits in that time frame. Of course, the whole system of employment and insurance being tied to each other is the real issue, but that doesn't excuse their blatant discrimination. When between making decision that's good for the patient or good for the the spread of radical christianity, it's clear this conservative activist court is always going to side in favor of their own bias and political interests over doing the right thing by the patient.

Also, bit of irony for you : a few decades ago, businesses and even conservatives were actually in favor of creating a government run healthcare system. It was in no small part the religious lobby that fought it and popularized the 'socialism is coming for you!' meme that is so popular today. One of the big reasons they did not want a government run system is that healthcare filtered through private religious companies means power over people who will not join their religion but do need healthcare. If the government got involved, it would mean people could get healthcare without them

To yet again mention our merit situation as hobby lobby employees. There is a gap in part time vs full time pay however they have just raised part timers (in georgia at least) a company wide $13 h/r for part time associates as of 10/4/21 the initial raise of 2020 seemed to had been more focused towards benefiting full time associates. There have been meetings to discuss another potential full time raise. I have no further information on that. i have been full time with them for 3 1/2. years now and I definitely appreciate “their own thing” they have going on 👍🏼 -sincerely an 820 employee
