Hobby Shop 1982 Episode 5: Module S4 Lost Caverns of Tsojcanth

I have that module, Against the Giants, and the Desert module plus a couple single adventure modules still with covers and included maps.

I'm really enjoying the Hobby Shop 1982 series. I think you should make it a regular thing. I'm amazed you can remember running/playing some of these modules so long ago. I really like the stories that you mention about what your group did at the time etc..

This was a favorite adventure of mine from back in the day, as well. Yeah, it was VERY deadly for us. lol I think we lost like 8 characters through this one. Pretty sure that is a record for a single adventure.

If you ever did a top 10 or top 20 all time module list, to me this it top 3 easy. Such a great module. Only ran it once, but have read it many times. So many cool things about it. Great video! This series is a great idea. Thank you for posting these.

Thank you for reminding me about this module. One of the PCs in my party recently acquired a treasure map (thanks to a Deck of Many Things), so this module could fill in nicely for that....

I owned S1 The Tomb of Horrors, S2 White Plume Mountain & S3 Expedition To The Barrier Peaks, but I never got around to buying S4! I even owned WG4 The Forgotten Temple of Tharizdun, which as you know was the companion module to S4. With hindsight, I wish that I'd never bothered with The Tomb of Horrors and bought S4 instead!

I always used to say that this was maybe the best value for the buck of the old TSR modules. Really fun one. :-) Thanks for doing these videos, and yes, please keep them coming! :-D Loving these videos!

Not going to watch this, because I have ran this several times over the decades, and it is still among my top 20 favorite written adventures. Definitely a classic that I recommend anyone pick up the PDF and check it out.

I enjoy this series as I was in elementary and middle schools during this time so I remember how every event was a big release to the AD&D player.

Another great video Tony, brought a smile to my face watching. Lost Caverns and Forgotten Temple were some of my favorite modules to play and later DM, fond memories! Also wanted to give a shout out to all of the great art in both of those.

A war party of 81 hobgoblins would be an interesting random encounter - and take a looong time to resolve! As DM I'd be tempted to homebrew combat rules to speed things up. Maybe a bucket o' dice rolling marathon. Players & DM start rolling to-hit and damage dice and stop when one side runs away.

Did you ever eat at The Comeback Inn in the Chicago area while it was still in business? Dave Arneson stated it was the inspiration for The Comeback Inn in his Blackmore setting he created in the 1970s. It was the tavern where player characters would meet at the start of an adventure. You could argue the "You all meet in a tavern . . ." cliche had its origin in The Comeback Inn.

How do players navigate the caverns? Are they able to see these maps?

Tony, have you thought of expanding on the Hobby Shop 82’ series? I’m sure there more to talk about during this time period. Great idea. Love the concept
