Not many hobie 17 setup vids around so i appreciate the detail. Someone told me hull damage is imminent with a mans weight and mast on the trailer but you guys didnt seem worried. Are you just sailing solo on this boat or do you all pile on for fun? I have a 17 in NZ theyre quite rare around here it seems. Im moving up from 14's and that huge mast seems a little daunting. And unlikely id rite it in the water. Im even considering downsizing the rig putting a 14 mast base on it and a transom bracket with 2hp so i can go adventure cruising. Any thoughs on how a downsized rig would perform on the hobie 17?
Thanks for this vid. I used to own a hobie 16, and I did every trick in the book to speed up setup time, quick pins here and there, parallel efforts by crew, etc and never could get the job to be less than 45 minutes. The 17 looks to be a wee bit simpler. But one tidbit to possibly add to your video -- before starting with the job, make sure no powerlines nearby?
Hey Jaser. If you take a look at about 2:01 in the video, at the very right hands side of the screen, you can see we are actually winching the mast up by connecting to one of the 2 forestays. Once the mast is up, we disconnect from the forestay and attach it to the front of the Hull. Not sure if that's explained well, but let me know if it's not clear. And thanks for watching 👍
