Installation and removal of a modified Hobie scupper cart while on the water without needing to turn or flip the kayak. Instructional video on how to make the pvc handle yourself. diy: • DIY instructions for m...
Amazing that Hobie can invent something like 'Mirage Drive' but leave us all out in the cold when to comes to solo launching. Great workaround in this vid...!!
Thing is Hobart Alter created the mirage drive and he retired a long time ago (he also passed away in 2014). His family / company has just been milking the patents for every cent they can before they expire (Whole reason they put out passport line was to compete with all the clones after the original patent expired). bonafide and Boone Dox make far better solutions then Hobies extremely overpriced scupper carts (also seen plenty of PA hulls fail because of carts cracking the scuppers).
This is the best solution I've seen. However, now I just leave the wheels on most of the time. Unless you have to pedal a long way to the fishing grounds, just leaving the wheels on is best.
Thanks. I didn't want to flip the kayak or get into the water for installation. Came from the boondox landing gear and I figured there had to be a better way with the hobie cart
John, thanks so much. I’ve hurt my back wrapping around my hobie to extricate my cart in the water. Now I can just do it from the top. It will be a back saver. Nice job.
Just did this for my Compass and just want to point out some things: 1. The clearance on the sides is very tight. I butane torched a post on the cart to soften it and bent it a little out to give me a little more clearance. Be careful not bend it too much the tolerances are actually quite tight to be able to fit in the scupper hole. 2. It will be easier if you glue the t-handle so that its oriented 90 degrees to the wheels. 3. When putting the cart back into scupper hole when its time to go home, sometimes the post will get stuck against the plastic lip inside, simply grab the metal post of the cart itself and pull up. Thanks John for sharing, say good bye to cart flipping!
Brilliant innovation. I regret not buying a scupper hole trolley. I have seen a RU-vid video of a Lake Macquarie NSW Australia kayaker (Paul Farrell) who uses bungee (stretch) cords to pull his trolley into position. A great assist to users of scupper type kayak trolleys.
They would probably sell it for $99 or more. It's also limited to the narrower range of their kayaks. Compass and smaller. The current generation outback and PAs are too wide for this, which I assume is where most of their sales are. Good luck with the build.
I just bought a 2020 hobie outback and on a recent trip struggled to not lose my gear. This is such a great idea and having the same cart, I will definitely need to try this. You should consider making and selling the pvc portion so the masses will only have to do the drilling.
INGENIOUS! great job with this idea! where did you get the little pin to connect the handle to the cart and how did you attach it to the pvc? Did you glue it to the inside of the pvc pipe? 👍
If you search "push button spring clip" on Amazon, there are plenty of options. 6mm is close enough to fit the 1/4 inch holes of the Hobie cart. I have another video on how to make the handle ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-6czaug9CmA0.html
@@JohnNguyen4 this does not work on a 2019 through 21 outback. i just tested my HD cart to see if it would fit in the scupper hole and outside the kayak and the outback is too wide for cart. great idea tho and was going to do this for my outback. Josh Bister
Love it Love it! I have seen versions where they add weight to the cart so you don't fight the buoyancy. I love the T handle idea to be able to rotate the cart. Where do you find that little spring loaded gizmo ?
those clips on amazon are no longer listed, I wonder if you could just use a pool clip? the ones that go on skimmers etc. - gonna try this pretty soon to cold in the winter to wade out to my knees to get that stupid cart under there -- great idea!
I haven't changed it much. Instead of using a coupler and gluing two pieces of PVC together, I kept it long and added a stop collar instead. You can see it in this video: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-6czaug9CmA0.html
Just a thought, but, couldn't you have cut just the pvc pipe and used the whole coupling instead of cutting the it? I just made mine from your excellent mod directions but didnt cut the coupler, instead opting to cut the pipe and cement them into the coupling. I forgot the foam for flotation, so Ill try the expanding foam i used in the Watersnake trolling motor mod. Thanks for the great mod and also on the excellent instructions on the Watersnake mod! Cant wait to hit the lakes here in E Tenn soon as my boat registration papers are processed. I also used your KMart mod for the battery carry case. You Da Man.
You definitely could cut the pipe and use the entire coupler. I did that on my 1st version and had no issues. Only reason why I showed this way was because it was just one less connection.
I got most of it done weirdly I can only do your technique from the left side of the kayak. The right side scupper is off center or something and the cart goes in at an improper angle. Cart goes in fine normally though.
Try it again while you're on the water. The buoyancy of the tires may help in aiming the post to that scupper. Dry testing will only go so far because the weight of the tires changes the straightness of the PVC+post. Hope you understand what I'm trying to say.
It doesn't have to be exact. I think I measured from the top of the post to the center of the existing hole. Then marked the same length on the other post
Thanks Alec. First I extended the flush mount rod holders with two 18 inch lengths of 1 1/2 PVC pipe. Use a heat gun to soften the pipe to make it fit. Then I added gear tracks to both sides of the tank well to hold the Railblaza rod holders. a.co/d/9aQZbN6
I made a follow up video showing each step in making the handle. It's slightly better then what I used in this old video. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-6czaug9CmA0.html
Genius!! Thanks for the great idea! I wonder if it would also work with the sand tires. I figure they're much more buoyant than the regular tires, especially the large sand tires. Is it hard to fight the buoyancy of the tires of your cart?
It isn't that difficult with the HD tires unless there is a very strong current. Those balloon tires may be pretty difficult to submerge, not sure I'd try it with this method. Good luck if you do. Maybe use aluminum pipe instead of pvc.
For all of the "innovation" that Hobie boasts about, they cant do a better job with the damn cart? That is literally the only glaring flaw with it. Great job with this modification. Terrible job by Hobie.
great idea. wont work on a 2019 or newer Outback! Kayak is too wide for cart to fit in scupper hole and outside of kayak. i was wishing it would work. josh Bister
The Hobie wheels shown here won't work well on the beach. The balloon tires will. I may upload a video on how to make the handle and also how to install it in a few weeks
@@JohnNguyen4 oh no i meant, does it work well when you come back in on a beach. i assume you'd have to do it while its still deep before you beach yourself
Hi John. I'm looking to make one of these rods/poles for my hobie cart. How long are the two 1/2 inch PVC pipes you connected with the coupling? and where did you track down the button clip that pinches into the cart? Having trouble searching for it. Thanks!
This is genius! Is there a way you can email me the parts list if possible? I wanna try this out on my hobie outback and I fish a lot alone and getting the kayak on the cart on the water is easy, but trying to get the cart under the boat without tilting it with full gear is darn near impossible unless I have someone else helping me out. I'd greatly appreciate it!
Hey Mark, what's your email? I see you have a pre 2019 outback. Make sure you can fit the Hobie cart with one post in the scupper and one on the side before you start modding. I know the 2019s are too wide for this method.
@@JohnNguyen4 thanks brother! And yes when I saw this video after I bought my 2018 outback i measured the width of scupper to the cart and it fits between the space. Its fishingwithmg@gmail.com and I very much appreciate you sending over the specs!
How did you remove the end cap on the pole with the bungee cord? On the standard cart that side is like a glued in plastic and I can't get it out with a flat head screwdriver like the other side that just pops out easy.
Sure Marcus, bottom to coupler length is 8.25 inches, coupler to tee is 15 inches. This is taking into consideration the 1/2 inch needed to glue pipe to the coupler and tee.
