I have 'lost my marbles' while on a trip also, they fell inside the mast cup removing the mast for a low bridge. The way I got them out was to get a stick off the beach and carve a 45 degree notch in the end, and then split the middle of the stick up from the notch. Then push that down on a bead and the stick spreads and pinches the bead and you got it. I have since made a similar one from a piece of 3/8 pvc pipe, like you would use on sink taps, and keep it in my tool kit. I just split it up a little way with a hack saw - works perfect.

Yes, tough getting the marbles out of the mast receiver. I used a sponge to remove most of the water and then used a wooden spoon with a loop of gorilla tape to grab the marbles. I did replace with new marbles as mine were a bit worn.

How did you realize your mast had the problem with the beads? Did you find out if this is a recurring problem or is there a maintenance needed to be done?

Two mast issues: - mast receiver bolt snapped. I heard a bang and then the mast dropped back. I quickly reffed the sail and headed to a beach for inspection....I was not happy! - The reefing tension was increasing (very hard to reef the sail). I inspected the mast and mast receiver and discovered that I had lost my marbles ;-) (the nylon balls that act as ball bearings had worked loose and fell into the mast receiver. The marbles and retaining rings can wear with time. It was a bit tricky to do the repair on the water while at the dock. Note the first failure (mast receiver bolt failure) may have accelerated the second issue as the mast tipped back and stressed the rings that hold the marbles. These were two separate repairs. (about a week apart).

Hello James, I am a total newbie and on my way to become a Hobie sailer. Your videos inspire me and I like the way you present your adventures. On question how do you show speed and direction in your videos? I would like to follow your way and show what I can do with my Hobie as soon as i get it, in Europe. Plan is to use it in Netherland, preparation to sail to England , France and the Mediterranean Sea. If you could share your technical information would help.

Hi, I use both Garmin and GoPro action cams. Both have video editors that capture GPS data and display the data on instrument gauges that overlay on the video in post processing. The TI is a lot of fun. If you are sailing offshore additional safety gear is needed along with experience. The TI is a fun boat to sail. I was planning on being in FAN0 in June but travel is restricted now. Enjoy.

Woah, wait, the Challenge is still on regardless of what's going on? Hmm... I've always wanted to participate (maybe not during a pandemic), good luck and be safe out there! The Hobie TI is pretty much the best rig for it : )

The EC started a few weeks ago March 7.....good social distancing when on the water!

@@seewind Ah, yes, I saw that. Hmm, not so much at the pre-launch and finish line though eh? 😜 I've been watching your videos for a lot time, I've got a TI myself, keep up with the good work! Cheers 😎👍

Was that a maintenance issue or a weak bolt or a design flaw ?

I am assuming you are referring to the main repair with the snapped mast receiver bolt. The mast receiver bolt is attached to the bottom of the kayak (molded in) and is hidden from normal inspection. The bold does wear over time. This is a 3 year old TI that I use a fair bit in rough ocean conditions. The failure may be due to wear or weak bolt. As noted in the video, the bolt and mast receiver were both replaced. Should be good for 3 more years!

Bi-Plane rigs only tend to work if you can sail fast enough that the apparent wind is always from the front.
