Great movie and review, lot's of famous Canadian's in this like Ricky from Trailer Park Boy's. I think the Montreal Ubisoft team worked on the FPS game Far Cry 5, they must have watched this movie. There's a mission where you go help a guy with a bunch of school buses, and the drug zombies are attacking, and the Burn Baby Burn song is blasting as you fight wave after wave of cultist drug zombies...LOL

The guy who made this movie did a short film called "Treevenge" which is available to watch on RU-vid. It is about 16 minutes and although it gets a little slow in the middle; it is REALLY picks up near the end and it is hilarious and twisted.

I always thought the perfect sequel to this would be Abby as a member of the 'Plague' who sees an old man mowing the lawn with his lawnmower. This would trigger her memory of the hobo and snap her out of it and she would take off her armour and take on the Plague.

I just rewatched Hobo With a Shotgun, and I had to come back to Gary and Iain’s review which introduced me to the film in the first place. Thank you OTSR for uncovering gems like this movie. Hollywood has reduced film making to a mass produced factory and abandoned quirky and unique storytelling. This is especially apparent in the genre of fantasy, horror, and science fiction. I just keep dipping into the well of what came before in terms of films (Television series too. Anyone a fan of Karl Kolchak: The Night Stalker?) and refresh myself in the waters of their imagination and creativity. 😔😔😔

Good luck finding an Ithaca 37 (trailer) or Remington 870 (movie) for 60 bucks nowadays. 6:00 He also had some kind of problem with one or both of his legs, so he simply wouldn't have been able to do a lot of that stuff. 15:05 Patrick Bateman, eat your heart out. 17:08 Kinda like Kyle Reese (or James Cole). Patrick Bateman wouldn't stand a chance against Kyle Reese (or James Cole) in a fair fight. 18:30 The Second Amendment empowers everyone, even the homeless, to rise up against their oppressors. Revolution is The People's birthright. 19:48 The preferred technique is to load the chamber first. It's called a "chamber load." Loading the chamber first is the only way to be able to fire a shot while loading the magazine tube. The shotgun Rutger uses is a Remington 870. In the trailer, it was an Ithaca 37. Both are user-friendly and can be used ambidextrously. Both are available with different barrel lengths and magazine tubes. In this case, both the trailer shotgun and the movie shotgun hold five standard rounds. That means four in the tube, plus one in the chamber (further illustrating why chamber-loading is the preferred technique when using a shotgun in combat). The Remington 870 is a side-ejector, which some might say makes it easier for a left-handed shooter to chamber-load. Rutger is right-handed, so that's an extraneous detail in his case. *Note:* A standard 12-gauge shotgun shell is 2-3/4" (70mm) long. A Magnum shell is 3" (76mm) long. That's after being fired. There's a crimp on the end that opens up after firing. The chamber of the gun has to be designed with that in mind. Most modern shotguns have 3" Magnum chambers. Not sure about the Ithaca 37, since it's an older model (1937 compared to 1950), but Rutger's Remington 870 has a Magnum chamber. A 12-gauge Magnum can deliver a payload that's pretty close to the payload of a standard 10-gauge round. 10-gauge was the standard-setter in the Old West. 12-gauge in metric is 18.5mm (.729 caliber). 10-gauge in metric is 19.7mm (.775 caliber). 19:51 Also, the preferred technique is to reload using the support hand so you can keep your shooting hand at the ready. I learned a lot of this stuff from friends and family members who were in the military or were police officers. And yes, they would have sided with "The Hobo" (as would I) in an urban guerrilla scenario where vigilantism becomes the law of the land. 20:30 If blood gets on blued steel, it needs to be removed immediately or it'll strip the bluing right off and promote rust. Then you need to treat the afflicted area with solvent ("Hoppe's 9" is a popular choice). In some cases, the afflicted area might need to be re-blued. Or you could opt for a gun that has a matte oxide, phosphate, Parkerized, or Marinecoat finish. I know, I know. The Hobo had to take what he could get. Really, the only "upgrade" he needs for his do0mstick is an extended magazine tube (flush-fit with the barrel) so it'll hold seven instead of five. 20:48 He should have taken that AK. Then he'd have two weapons. Alternatively, he could have equipped someone else with that AK and recruited them to fight alongside him. If you want your cause to succeed, you have to be strategic. To be strategic, you must be resourceful. That means you must make use of *ALL* available resources, yo! 21:09 It should be legal to hunt pedophiles for sport. 23:39 / 23:50 That's "The Hobo" from the trailer. 29:39 Trying to outdo Ash Williams *AND* Lionel Cosgrove! That's...ambitious to say the least. 36:22 It's "yin," Not "ying." Also, that's not what yin and yang represent.

There is a bunch of Canadian Easter eggs in this movie too. The car that Slick and Ivan are driving in is a bricklin which was produced in Canada for a very short time. The song that plays at the beginning of the end credits also appeared at the end credits of a late '80s early '90s Canadian cartoon the Raccoons. The first victim of the Drake, Ivan and Slick was going to delete actors and creators of the Canadian comedy. Show the trailer park boys. The actor that played the Drake it's probably best known before that for his role in a Canadian sci-fi series called LEXX.

Fun Fact: Hobos, Tramps, and Bums are not the same type of individual. They are related but each is distinct. For example, Hobos travel and are willing to work; Tramps travel, but avoid work when possible; and Bums neither travel nor work.

Grindhouse is either hit or miss for me. Loved Deathproof. Hated Planet Terror. Black Dynamite was terrific. Hobo with a Shotgun was terrible terrible torture porn. It lost me right away at that part you showed where the hooker starts dancing in the blood gush. I prefer my retro movies to be less trashy and a tad more serious. A good example would be House of the Devil directed by Ti West. Anyhoo, still looking forward to your next review. Keep up the good work.

Hobo With A Shotgun is more similar to Troma films of the 80s than more serious films of the 70s. Like take Toxic Avenger where a group of coked up gym jockeys run over a child with their car, take photographs of his crushed head, and later in the movie a woman is masturbating to the same photo. It is that over-the-top shock factor.
@mrg3241
@mrg3241 7 лет назад
Hmmm, you know I don't think I've seen the original Toxic Avenger. Though I did see the sequel ages ago. I might have to check it out and compare. There's a fine line between being bold and having bad taste. Think of Natural Born Killers (fucking awesome film) and how Oliver Stone knew where to draw the line. Compare the scene where Malory shoots a kid dead while he's giving her head with the aforementioned sleazy hooker dancing in blood scene from HWASG.
@garyabbot4659
@garyabbot4659 7 лет назад
Kind of agree. It's trying to capture a style, and it'll never be as good as the original era. I still watch them though. Unlike you I liked Planet Terror. I like it way less now I've seen it a few times. I disliked death proof, although Kurt was awesome. It's trendy to like grind house so people will probably just like whatever comes out in that style.

Fantastic! Great review! I saw this several times on Blu Ray. Although the review was excelent guys I missed some of the scenes mentioning those great oneliners: -Mother theresa is a goddamn saint! Hobo -It's a beautiful day for a skate rape!' Ivan Also the scene considering this: He got his foot stick in a toaster and being electocuted..followod by the (kids bus) ... they enter a tv studio were Ivan throws the skate into the tv host. Love it! -You a teacher or something? (great mimique from Rutger Hauer) And notice: The Drake has some crazy tv presentation and personal fun of killing his family members (the uncle)...as he calls the Drake show he often does...talking bout crazy..(why he shot Ivan on tv show in final scene..) And the scene in the hospital: the medical staff helping Abby by "LIve you fucking whore!!!" that's some odd personal you'd say.

Hey guy,s great review as usual. I preorderd this aswell, had to as soon as heard bout it and seen trailer short flick on you tube.They took all the grass cutting stuff from fact as the geezer who was the original hobbo does that in his home town to make sum cash as he,s on benefits due to having medical issues but he gets a little cameo in there. And the scene with the dodgems was mostly improvised as the guy with original location backed out last sec and I wonder how much flour they went through for all the coke scenes.superb choice of flick lads and can you do me a favour and review late phases I'm sure you'll enjoy😉
