I'd love to see a special league with 1930's equipment, technology, and rules....and ticket prices (not likely) - call it the retro league.

This game is from March 5, 1932. The Habs went on to win the Canadian Division but lost in the Semis to the Rangers. The Leafs would go on to win their first Cup with that franchise name. Too bad the fight between Ace Bailey and Aurel Joliat is omitted. That would have been fun to see.

My Mother used to work in the Chicago Blackhawks front offices in the old Chicago Stadium and I remember they had a bunch of games on 8mm film that went back to this period of time. I'm sure the Wirtz family has a bunch..

Quite an honour to see Ace Bailey playing, given the sad end of his career later that year.

@ Rocker5593: According to Wiki, Maple Leaf Gardens is still there, but now it's been turned into a part grocery store/part athletic center, as of November 30, 2011.

The game was played March 5th, 1932 at Maple Leaf Gardens and ended in a 1-1 tie. The March 7th edition of the Montreal Gazette mentions the game being filmed in the lengthy description of the game. The two clubs were battling for first place in the Canadian Division standings.

So cool to see Morenz and Joliat, great transition on that goal, combining with "Black Cat" Gagnon. Thanks for posting this. I agree the players are quite good. Forward passing rules in various zones changing a fair bit in these years.

Great stuff! Thanks for posting! The most remarkable thing I see in this film is that a great many players coasted during their shifts, either standing still or barely moving. Maybe the good old days weren't so good after all.

Dude ... back then they played pretty much the entire game! There were no 'line changes' also NO FORWARD PASS out of the defensive zone (which is why you see them carrying the puck all the time). Also NO CENTER RED LINE.
