Hockey Tape + Rocker Guard = ✅

It's time to deal with the inside of the Bugatti. The initial plan was to apply automotive seam sealer on all the interior and exterior seams then black it out with rocker guard.... Except now, Bad Chad wants to put hockey tape on the interior seams in place of seam sealer. The concept is that seam sealer will be applied underneath on the exterior so why is it needed on the inside? Other than causing an ugly mess. We're going to experiment on a small section and see how it looks and reacts 🤔

Not sure the tape would . With the sealer on top and then sound barrier skin on top of that and then carpet…why would the tape come off ? It made be a little unique but I think the logo is sound and it will probably maintain its long term adhesion . Unless you have done this and found out otherwise …?

i think the Rock Guard is a good idea. As far as the hockey tape I would buy seam sealer. Why? Do it once do it right. The other thing that struck me was how sharp the edges are on the inside of the Bugatti. That is where the seam sealer pays off. If you put carpet over those rough edges wear and tear will certainly follow. Glad you are experimenting to find the right answer. Jolene deserves her due on this. Spring is afoot. Take care.

It’s all getting covered with carpet and upholstery. And it’s getting glued down as the Rock Guard spray soaks into the woven tape. My fabric airplane is covered in basically the same way. Fiberglass is done like that, carbon fiber, only difference is the glue.
@DarthParkerCustoms
@DarthParkerCustoms 7 месяцев назад
They sell a seam sealer tape too. Might be a better option than hockey tape. And look cleaner than the caulk style seam sealer. But if you’re covering the inside with carpet, it doesn’t have to look beautiful under it. Just caulk seam seal it and use a direct to metal coating. I don’t think that rock guard is direct to metal.
@DarthParkerCustoms
@DarthParkerCustoms 7 месяцев назад
Check out a nice etch primer to spray before the rock guard. I’d look into a rubberized undercoating instead of the rock guard too.

Been there done that. I never was successful in keeping water out with tape. The problem is that any water that seeps into the seam, from a spilled drink, water from wet boots or a window left open, leaky door seal, washing the car, will get into the seam and stay there (you sealed the bottom of the seam) until it rusts itself through the panel. Also you can paint/seal over tape but the bond with the metal is only as good as the tape adhesive. Love the show - not a criticism, just from my experience.
@Joe_M-
@Joe_M- 7 месяцев назад
I’m sure hockey tape would no doubt LOOK okay along the seams and such…. But it will positively NOT do what seam sealer does. It’s not going to seal the joints from moisture. It’s not going to provide the sound deadening between panel connections like seam sealer is intended to do. MOST importantly It’s not going to seal the joints and prevent rust from starting and leaking out staining the surface around it and ultimately starting rot issues kept inside or not. It might look okay, but it’s positively not going to provide you anything at all that seam sealer does in ways of function and protection. The entire purpose of seam sealer is “purpose” and not looks. Hockey tape is only going to be a visual thing and will not stay in place long term…. It’s meant to wrap around something and also meant to stick to only itself long term. Sorry, but it’s a HUGE no go from me
@BadChad
@BadChad 7 месяцев назад
1) it will still be seam sealed from underneath on the exterior 2) rocker guard doesn’t rust when applied properly
@Joe_M-
@Joe_M- 7 месяцев назад
I meant the hockey tape. Rock guard is great and enough rock guard can make up for no seam sealer. My comment was simply against the hockey tape being effective for anything more than looks is all. The hockey tape will sure make a good looking seam area, but beyond that I’d be sure to lay down rock guard or seam sealer. If I was to use the hockey tape, I personally would rock guard under it first and again over it. But it’s all only my belly button… what each of us are comfortable with is what we each do. I’ve taken a bunch of ideas from you and tossed only a few. Either way, love the work, love the shows, haven’t ever missed one from discovery days to today…. Thank you for all the hours of entertainment 👍

The adhesive will wear off under the hockey tape. Seam sealer would last a lifetime. You might have to use a seam sealer later after the car is did and done. Sometimes it doesn't hurt to experiment with other products like you'er doing. I'm interested how long the hockey tape will last. Personally, I don't think the primer and paint will stick to the hockey tape with out the chemical reaction with the adhesive. It might lift up the tape. Let's see what happens. I could be right or wrong. I just hope it doesn't lift up like spraying Restoleum over onto Krylon paint. It will eat the acrylic paint right off.

The Bugatti is amazing, regarding tape, 3m Seam Sealant tape. It is seam sealant but tape, no mineral spirits, use a straight edge when laying it long. It is paintable with any 2k or rock guard. It is available in 7/8in which is more than enough for wrapping an edge. I am not against what you are doing but the advantage of this tape is that it could be used on the lower 90 degree seams without the fear of the hockey tape fabric absorbing moisture. It is expensive, it would have been about $100 usd to do that interior.

Actually rust happens all around and under seam sealer. Primer is pourus also, unless you use the best epoxy. So paint it good that will stop the rust a good top coat after primer. Seam sealer cracks and is ugly. Way hard to remove after it gets brittle unless the rust lifts it then you got lucky lol. Then you get to remove the rust and then forget the seam sealer.

Not on board with the tape. It's going to peel up under the carpet and rust out. Seam seal may have been more labor intensive but would be much better.

Hi Jolene and Chad. Chad do it your way and be satisfied with what you do. You will see comments for and against what you do. You are the only one who has to be satisfied. God bless and have a blessed night

Use Jtape for seam sealing. Now I need some help. This is sad and you think I could find it but the lights you have at the beginning of the video. Who/what/where are they and where did you find them.?

Hey there, big fan of your show. I don't know much about metal work or welding, actually don't know anything about it, other than what I watched you do over the past year or so, My question is, is spot welding as strong as if it was a continuous bead of weld? Big fan from Moncton, New-Brunswick, keep up the great work guys😊

Continuous is gonna be stronger but the main thing is penetration for strength. 😉✌

put the dynamat over the whole surface, this is not a car to do the shortcut, goog enough, quick job... this should be done well and the time spent is worth it. Joleen deserves a nice and comfortable car, so you should try to cut down on as much road noise as possible, so put the dynamat everywhere you can. As for the hockey tape?... it eventually dries out and lets go, so don't use it. Let this be the one car you do right. if you don't want to put seam sealer, then don't, just paint it with rock guard, but don't use the tape! it just makes a mess later.

Seam sealer on the inside corners and Dynamat over top of everything. Stop with the hockey tape and rock guard.

The hockey tape on top of the welded tacks will not cover well. The seam sealer will which will help keep out the moisture Chad. Yeah the hockey tape may look better but it doesn't do the job of keeping out moisture. That's one of the jobs of seam sealer is to seal the joint to help keep moisture out of the seams. That is one of its primary purposes. I wouldn't bother with trying to save a couple dollars on seam sealer.. vs hockey tape just for the meare looks of things. smh. I recommend you think this one through Chad. Cheers.

Wonder what heat under the car will do to the floor pan/panel's tape adhesion ?
