A person would've had to have lived through that era to realize how dynamic, accomplished and famous he really was. His appeal cut through the cultural divides to make him a hero to people from every walk of American life. His fall from grace was one of the most stunning moments in the last 100 years. To appreciate his greatness, a person has to separate the athlete from the man who destroyed lives and families. You have to isolate his career as a shining moment in the history of the game. There's nothing else about the man that's worth holding onto or remembering.
