You know? As a father, I think you'll enjoy Fruits Basket a lot. It has some of the best parents in the anime (and some of the worst too) that give some live changing advice. It's also considered one of the best (won a lot of awards when published) and got a remake a couple of years ago. The dub is good too

@j_official4138 the dwarf in the flask was a tiny speck of The Truth that had been pulled out from the gate due to the alchemic experiment. It had knowledge by default, but never learned anything beyond what it knew when it was put in the flask. The Gate represents your knowledge of alchemy. But the only thing the dwarf knew was how to use blood sacrifices (the same thing that gave it life originally when Hoenheim's master used his blood).

I saw the same will to live in my grandmas and my great-grandma. It's hard. I didn't get to be with either of my grandmas nor my great-grandma in their time of passing nor at their funerals, so that scene hits a bit closer to home. Especially since I lost both my grandmas within the last couple of years. This is the first time FMA's ending has consistantly made me cry. Crying like this speaks loudly of our wealth of humbling experiences, I guess.

Hohenheim started off as a shady figure who I wasn't too fond of at first. Then when they revealed father's face, I started hating him even more, thinking it was him. But then we saw more of him (the real him), learned of his backstory, and now.... he's my favourite (not just one of, but my actual favourite) character in the series Another thing to note, while Father had the Homunculus (representing the 7 sins), Hohenheim represented the 7 virtues: He fell in love with Trisha and remained loyal to her even long after her death (Chasity), he never abuses or exploits his power beyond what is necessary for the situation (Temperance), he is willing to sacrifice his own happiness for the sake of others (Charity), he is willing to put in the work to accomplish his goals (Diligence), he is willing to endure great struggle or time in the process (Patience), and despite being incredibly powerful he uses his power to help others (Kindness), and does not see himself as superior to others (Humility) And on the subject of Father, he wanted to become God, killed hundreds of thousands along the way, thought he wasn't in the wrong, and he deservedly paid the price for it in the end. Do you know who that reminds me of... Light "Kira" Yagami. Acted like a God, thinking he wasn't doing anything wrong, killed so many in the process, and he paid dearly in the end for it. Father's quote of humans who dare play God must pay a steep price for their arrogance happens to perfectly fit Light's character too

I had the exact same emotional rollercoaster regarding Hohenheim, he's pretty much my favorite character as well (although Scar is pretty much on the same level for me) The scene where Hohenheim's face on the family photo is revealed is honestly one of my favorite scenes in the whole show, which just shows how impactful it was for me. Until that moment I was so sure it would show a disinterested, emotionless face which would inspire even stronger negative feelings for him, just to get hit with the full force of him crying and slowly realizing how terribly wrong I was the whole time.

The fact that this didn’t end with this episode is a reminder that fmab really has one of the best, most satisfying and elaborate endings of any anime. You really get everything you want to see after all the craziness and it ties the journey up perfectly Also you do deserve it Luke it’s rare to find reactors who are genuine and don’t overreact yet entertaining and emotionally mature and perceive enough to understand the emotions, underlying themes and storylines of certain anime. The Bloopers get recommended so highly because they are an official blooper reel that was included on one of the DVDs, some are true bloopers that are just line flubs, but a LOT of them are the VA's just fuckin' around in the studio and are absolutely fantastic. I end up expecting to hear the blooper lines in my head half the time on rewatches of the series because some of them fit so well Edit: I don't think it would make any kind of good reaction series, but there's a series by Max Derrat here on RU-vid exploring the "real world alchemy" inspirations behind FullMetal Alchemist/Brotherhood - it's honestly absurd how deeply connected to historical alchemy the series runs and it does a LOT toward explanations of some of the more obscure pieces of the series. Obviously it's all with a grain of salt since none of it is confirmed and it's all fan speculation/inference.

Lust: Killed by a man known as a womanizer. Gluttony: Eaten. Sloth: Died after actually trying, but too late to make a difference. Envy: Killed himself after he was outted for being jealous of humans. Wrath: Died with a peaceful smile on his face after destroying everyone in his path. Pride: Defeated after abandoning his own pride as a humunculus and then reduced to a human. Greed: Gave up everything he could have had to save others.

@mrsocko316
@mrsocko316 10 месяцев назад
@@2gredvisions8560 Yeah I would attribute it more to friendship than anything, but also, Alphonse was sick of losing people and didn't want anyone else to die. But now that I think of it, it really didn't have anything to do with Alphonse. Roy killing her would've been the same had Alphonse not been there. Alphonse saving Hawkeye didn't give Roy the motivation or chance to kill Lust. It DID however keep him from going over the edge like he almost did with Envy. Imagine an alternate universe where Hawkeye had been killed there in front of Al, and what Roy would've done there in response. It would've made his rage during his fight with Envy look like a little temper tantrum.
@2gredvisions8560
@2gredvisions8560 10 месяцев назад
@@mrsocko316 You're not wrong there 😆. And I'm pretty sure it would've probably resulted in the scenario you described had Al not been there. It's true that AL didn't want to see anymore people die before him without having the chance to do something about it. That does speak more true of his convictions than anything else, but much like with Nina and Hughes (save for Martel 😅), AL did care for Riza as a friend. Hence why I at least gave the mention of platonic love being one of the facets behind his actions. Both this and Al's earlier mentioned convictions were even noted and commended by Mustang when he finally arrived onto the scene, XD. Regardless of whether or not that was the case, you were right in simplifying it as being more of Roy and Riza's love for one another. After all, Roy's rage, and even his hypothesized immense rage had she died, had to come from somewhere 😆. Besides Envy, Mustang was even willing to kill the Golden-Toothed Doctor when he had Hawkeye severely wounded. All of these occasions can be used to show just how much Roy truly cared for Riza. But of course, he needed that restraint, as Riza herself would never live with herself knowing that she was the one who pushed him into such destructive and hate-filled extremes. Not wanting him to go down an undesirable path. This, along with her own commitments, show just how much she cares for Roy, especially as a person.

Ling was searching high and low for a stone and the second he gets it he’s willing to give it to Ed to get Al back. And yeah Hohenheim’s passing ALWAYS tears me apart. Every single time. And Father was the most ignorant person in the series, but the sad thing is he could’ve turned out better. The homonculi all showed a different aspect of Father’s own character. Greed wanted friends because Father wanted friends. Envy was jealous of humans because Father was jealous of humans. And so on. But Father’s pride and arrogance kept convincing him that humans were beneath him and as a result he learned nothing and never grew. You finally get the answer to the question at the start of an intro this episode. The cost of a human soul + body is: acknowledging that alchemy can't solve all of your problems, affirming your humanity, and giving up the ability to use alchemy for the rest of your life and any good/benefit you could have done in the future using it. A rather fitting price given the themes and display of how much alchemy has helped/save people in this show.
@kid1412d
@kid1412d 10 месяцев назад
Sacrificing the ability to perform alchemy is not the cost of bringing back a human soul. Once a soul leaves the mortal world (aka deceased), no amount of price can be payed to bring that soul back. What Ed did is to sacrifice his alchemy to compensate the cost of his brother's body, since it is due to alchemy that he loses his brother, and this is only possible because Al is not dead, just stuck in limbo between the real world and the portal.
@neksuscat
@neksuscat 10 месяцев назад
There is NO price for Human soul. No Alchemist could create Soul, only steal someone else's life in order to... "imitate" life. It's been shown through the course of the whole series, that there is no way to brin back the dead, nor create new life, beside giving birth, aka "through the power of God". Ed gave up his Alchemy as a ticket to open the gates back for him and Al to return back into material world, not create human body and soul, cuz they're ultimately priceless.

I've spent a long time thinking about it, and I think the shows amazing for Edwards final scene with the Truth. Why giving up your Portal is worth a Human life? Because that Portal allows you to use alchemy. All of the knowledge in the world, it basically makes you god. When trying Human Transmutation Humans will give up anything, their limbs, their lives, even the lives of other humans. They'll give anything, ACCEPT the power that gave them this ability. The power to move the earth, to cure any disease, the power to bring back the dead. In essence, they refuse to give up the closest thing they had to the power of God.

Ed not taking Hohenheim’s offer is the most important part of his character to me. Throughout this whole process he has never made excuses for what he did. He deserved what happened to him. He broke the rules. All he believed in was that him and Al could make amends and earn back their bodies. Even though Hohenheim would have died hours later, even those few hours were not Ed’s to take from him. He hadn’t earnt a trade on even that little of a human life. When Ed and Al return home, they comment on how Ling should be back in Xing by now, as they left the battle two months ago. By train, I'd imagine it takes a day, or two, tops, to get from Central to Resembool. So from Winry and Pinako's perspective, there were sucked into a swirling vortex of agony, and then a few days later, they find Hohenheim dead, and then two months later Ed and Al finally show up alive and well. Going by Winry's surprise, they didn't tell her about their bodies being returned, so I wonder fi they even called her to tell her they were alive.

Man the ending always gets me. This will always be an amazing journey and now you are part of us moved by it. As a fun fact, Brotherhood started almost during the last year of the manga publication so they both ended within a month of difference. Manga readers stayed silent in respect for anime only watchers to not ruin the ending for them. Hiromu Arakawa will always be a genius for creating FMA, her way of writing is just incredible.

That moment when "One of the best anime ever." is no longer mere hyperbole Hoenheim is a tragic character, and in truth, though Ed and Al are the primary protagonists in the series, you could easily argue that this is Hoenheim's story. In the end, I think that with Armstrong's words, he became convinced that his sons would be alright on their own and that they didn't really need him. It maybe wasn't the right choice but I could see him opting to return home to Risenbul as being his attempt to spare them both any more trouble with his own imminent demise The attention to detail with things is always amazing. Edward's right hand and arm are both atrophied compared to his left. Which makes sense given that they have been on the other side of the portal, not being used to the same extent but still growing as a part of him. The entire exchange at the end with The Truth is a mirrored parallel between Ed and Father. Father's primary motivation was to seek knowledge for the sake of knowledge alone. He held no compassion or care for the world around him in which that knowledge could be divined. Even with how much he obtained there was never any intent to use it towards bettering the world, only to consume and garner ever more knowledge, and thus he was punished for his arrogance and selfishness. Ed on the other hand was willing to give up such knowledge, or at the very least the potential it held to be used to obtain power choosing to value friends and the relationships he had because even if he were to lose his alchemy it wouldn't matter. The community of relationships he had around him was more than enough to help him overcome any issue. You could say that alchemy within this universe is a grand temptation of sorts. Those who practice it are faced with a lure of power that could easily consume them in its pursuit, or cause great suffering along the way. Those who come to realize that dangerous potential are the ones who attempt to distance themselves from it, or harshly constrict its use. You could say that Edward passed the test in realizing that no matter how much knowledge he attained, or how powerful he became, he'd only ever be human, and that was enough, with or without alchemy. And yes there is a blooper reel. It is part of the DVD release's special features and it is the voice cast making silly mistakes or humorous adlibs during dubbing. It is easily found online however to enjoy, and does contain some crass language. "Fuck him up!"

Edward Elric's last transmutation is not just a great moment in this show, but a colossal cultural achievement. The montage when Ed transmutes his gate and it cuts right away to God disappearing is so simple yet meaningful, almost like the famous Kubrick cut in Space Odyssey. It is a sort of "murder of God", but one inherently different in nature from what Nietzsche saw, rather like what he envisioned later in his life specifically before going insane. It's a truly timeless moment, and a decision that is inevitable for humanity to make, for from the birth of times we've been starving for knowledge and power, yet we will have to sacrifice it at some point for the sake of love. Dwarf in the Flask represents the other side of the coin, his character serves as a warning to not lose oneself in one's own strife, as even while being a homunculus back in the day he had true feelings, which Hohenheim remembered standing at his death place. There's much more that can be said about the brilliance of this work, but I'd like to keep it at this for now, enjoy the final episode.

One nice detail on the show is how everyone's Portal of Truth is different and represents their different ideals, knowledge and view on life. since we see it multiple times throught the show, Ed's portal changes multiple times and having multiple iterations of the Tree of Life as base. Meanwhile, the Dwarf in the Fask's portal was blank, showing he never really learned anything on his long life in pursuit to overthrow God/Truth.

The one and only reason why I keep on with these reactions is for how you really feel and understand these animes, because as for reaction channels there are a lot of them out there, but you are the only one who I felt really cared about what you are watching, instead of going "WOAH HE DED" and stuff like that to keep attention, you understand the message that the creator of this was trying to portray, you understand the feeling of the characters, and overall try to analyze the situation. I'm very happy to have found your channel months ago, and very happy to have seen your journey through FMA:B, one of the best animes out there. As for similar animes to watch after this one, you really have set a really high standard sadly, but this is good, as you will be able to tell which animes are worth watching. As what to watch after, I can't recommend you enough Hunter x Hunter or Monster, both are really good animes and despite being also kinda long, they succesfully do the magic of make it feel like a second by how good their stories are written, those two are the closest thing I can think of being similar to how character develompent is done in FMA:B. And as a personal recommendation, of course it would not be me if I didn't talk about To your eternity, I would love to see you react to that anime, I know it would be trully an unique experience knowing how you analyze stuff. But anyway, despite what you (or your veiwers) decide to watch after FMA:B, be sure that I'll be there to see you laugh, cry and smile for all the animes that have a rollercoaster of emotions. I hope you keep enjoy watching anime like this for a looong time.

So about "the answer" and the themes of this show, or some of them at least. If you look on Eds portal of truth you'll see a very particular tree like figure with words on it, one of the things you might recognize is the word "Sefirot", which might remind you of the famous Final Fantasy VII villain. This is because both FMA:B and Final fantasy 7 take inspiration of jewish mysticism, and particularly the concept of "The Sefirot". The Sefirot represent the different aspects of god, and the pathways between them. By traversing the paths and acquiring all the aspects of god you supposedly can become a perfect being. In storytelling the villain and the hero are often diametrically opposed reflections of each other. In this story archetype the idea of "becoming a perfect being" is usually interpreted by the villain as becoming a god. Meanwhile the hero ends up embodying what "a perfect being" really is, enlightenment. Not by being a god, but by being a human. I think you can see how this story applies in FMA:B. The father tried to become a perfect being by removing his humanity, and by sacrificing others in search of power and knowledge. He foolishly believed that what he became near the end was a perfect being, but it was less than he ever was. And that's why the truth does not answer his questions, because he should have seen the answer for himself, but through fathers arrogance, through him throwing away his humanity, through him sacrificing humans rather than forming bonds with them, he remained ignorant. Meanwhile Ed does the exact opposite, where Father sacrificed humans for power, Ed sacrificed his power for humans. He is enlightened, because he understands what really matters. "who even needs alchemy, when I've got them". Edward has true knowledge, and through it finds true happiness. He is enlightened and a perfect being, because through his bonds with other people his life has meaning. When Ed tried to bring back his mom he tried to cheat his way out of pain and suffering, he tried to use power as a shortcut. To deny the human experience and trespass on the domain of god. But the show shows us how beautiful human lives are in their fleeting nature, immortality is dreary, it's the fact that we die that gives value to every single moment, that makes the now so precious. In a sense Ed made the same mistake father did, father explicitly removed his humanity, but by trying to deny himself the experience of loss Ed too tried to get rid of a core part of what it means to be human. But in the end Ed attones, he no longer tries to use his power to "play god", he's just a simple human, which means he can't fix everything with alchemy, they will need to work hard, together.....as it should be. Man this show is great. Even after all these years it still manages to make me cry.

I'll never not cry when Hohenheim passes. It's tragic, how long he spent away from them so he could save them - save everyone - and when he finally finishes that, after the hundred of years he's been forced to be alive because of what Father did, suddenly he's out of time. It's unbelievably heartwrenching. But at least he died happy, knowing his sons did view him as their dad, after all they'd been through

lol I've been waiting for this ever since you said you liked Greed. Only the epilogue left after this! -Original Greed when he was being melted: warns Father he might make him sick if Father absorbs him. Current Greed when he gets absorbed: does just that lol. Also Original Greed: gets hit by Ed cause Ed transmuted his Ultimate Shield into something weak. Current Greed: does the same thing to Father. -When Ed sacrificed his portal, he mentioned Nina (the girl they couldn't save). Back when chimera Nina was taken away he lamented that he was merely a human, now he tells the Truth that he's ok with just being human. -It's not animated but there's an extra chapter in the manga where Hohenheim meets and talks to Trisha in the afterlife. Made me cry reading that, too lol. Yeah, it's sad Hohenheim died so early cause his kids are still teenagers and they should've had more time together.

FMAB truly is a masterpiece; a work of art. I think one of the biggest indications of art is it's ability to be analyzed totally different by different people as time goes on. I doubt this was intentional, but it's kind of beautiful the way this episode ends with Hoenheim being so proud of his sons. They are his complete pride and joy at the end of his life. A perfect reflection of Father casting aside his "Pride" to create the first homunculus, and also in a young boy named Selim. The story comes full circle, like the symbol of the homunculi the ouroboros, the serpent swallowing it's own tail. The symbol for the complete infinite cycle; all is one, and one is all. I've never noticed it until just now.

Couple of things I can finally say. Hohenheim's ending is honestly a happy one. He died happy, fulfilled, human. He got to see his sons come back, help them and protect them. He fixed his mistake and helped free the souls of millions. He was content and happy that his sons would be able to live the lives that he never could. As for Father, he originally only wanted freedom. He was originally a part of the being beyond the gate, what he calls god but he got greedy and focused on becoming God himself. All he had to do was accept himself and live. To end off though Luke, you absolutely do deserve the success that you are getting, you bring a smile and joy to a lot of people with your content. You should be proud of that.

Ok now that you reached here I can finally say this deep dive. So one of my favorite things about Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood is how the Homunculus’ characters are portrayed from actions to death. Greed: Wants everything, has the ultimate shield to protect his possessions. The first Greed died getting his possessions (allies) taken and the 2nd Greed (Greeling) died finally satisfied with what he had and selflessly sacrificed himself to protect what he acquired (friends). Lust: Loved to watch humanity struggle, has the ultimate lance to pierces that heart of anything. She died from a literal fiery passion. Gluttony: Hungry for anything and everything, given a belly that acts as a void of infinite space. He died being eaten by his own kind. Sloth: just wanted to rest, given the greatest speed in order to get jobs done faster. He died after exerting himself after making an effort. Envy: Was jealous of humanity literally “green with envy”, given the power to shapeshift into any being at will. Died having their jealousy exposed and being unable to handle their true self’s embarrassment. Wraith: Only homunculus made from a human body to view humanity and given an ultimate eye so nothing could escape his wraith. Died by being defeated by a man who conquered his own wrath (Scar). This finally allowed Wrath to find peace. Pride: The 1st homunculus given a child-like form, can manipulate their own shadow for endless possibilities as long as it's within what's deemed its container, just like Father hence why the shadows look like “the dwarf in the flask” aka Father’s most proud form. He was defeated by Ed physically and Kimblee psychologically, both making Pride realize he became a disgrace to his own race.

The main question of the series is “what would you give up to get what you want.” Everything is up for grabs so long as you can foot the bill, but there is no one true method of payment. There very well could have been a method for Homunculus to achieve it’s goal that wasn’t so abominable, but he didn’t care to search since the abominable option was right before his eyes.

Four things to mention here, in order: 1- Father tries to do it all on his own, and that was his ruin. A great detail is about the knowledge in the portal of truth every character has. Father's portal was blank beside the alchemical knowledge he has, he did understand anything. 2- Ed understands in the end that all is one (we are one), and one is all. The universe is a cycle and instead of life is short and means a little in the long view, it's still one more chapter in history. The only Truth is that we (human and alchemist both) are not Gods, we are just humans. It's a deep meaning that always makes me become humble and makes me cry (and it's the most important message for this entire show, I think) 3- Van Hohenheim is one of the greatest fathers in the anime, I think. Besides in the beginning he was introduced with intrigue and seems a villain of bad father, he cared a lot for his family, since He and Father were one blood, since Father dies Hohenheim Stone stopped working as well and it ran out of energy (he noticed this when the Major talk to him, and he started crying for realized the big boys his children became). I would love he said goodbye to the boys, but he wanted to die in the same grave that her wife so he didn't have time. 4- Thank you very much Luke for all those amazing reactions! You are an amazing person and you deserve all the good things that happen to you. As Ed said, you don't need alchemy you have +350k to support you! Go ahead for more! We love you!
