The Hohenzollern castle is stunning. Beautiful brickwork for a castle set in the beautiful region of Baden-Wurttemberg in southern Germany. Funny enough it's a Prussian enclave and Prussian clay.
Before 1849 the prussian province Hohenzollern had been the principalities Hohenzollern- Sigmaringen and Hohenzollern- Hechingen of the swawian branches of Hohenzollern family. The branch Hohenzollern is still alive and older than the prussian branch.
@@Chris-hp9be : The Habichtsburg is in Canton Aargau. So the Hohenzollern, Habsburg and the in 1268 died out Hohenstaufen familiy all came from former duchy Swabia.
The castle was severely damaged by an earthquake on Sunday morning, September 3, 1978. Some turrets collapsed and knight figures fell down. The reconstruction dragged on until the mid-90s. The Hohenzollern fault is a well-known earthquake area. The Hohenzollern fault was formed 15 million years ago. It is relatively new in the geological history. It is the result of tectonic tensions caused by the folding of the Alps under the pressure of the African plate and the resulting uplift of the Swabian Alb. The enormous forces created cracks, crevices and trenches. One of these shear zones below the fault at a depth of about 5 to 10 kilometers is responsible for the earthquakes.
This is where my ancestors used to live. My great great grandfather came to America just after the Civil War, and changed our name to Hohl. I ma the last living male of that side of the family. Several years ago the Hohenzollerns had a family reunion at this castle, and posted pictures on the Internet. One man was the spitting image of my Father, so apparently the bloodline is strong in our family.
True its a bit dramatic for such a tranquil beautiful scenery. Perhaps the Hohenzollern song would have been more fitting. There's a beautiful acustic version available online at Dr Ludwig's RU-vid channel. Regardless it's great footage and much thanks to whoever downloaded it
@@linajurgensen4698 Well it´s actually true that that´s not a "real" castle. I live under it in a small village. This castle was build in the late 19th century, so it never saw a knight or the medieval times. It´s the 3rd castle that is standing there on top of the ruins of the first castle that actually was build during the medieval time.
The place is dab smack on TOP of the hill. How the flogging heck did they get all the building materials right up there because when that was built transport wasn't what it is now. Lovely place, though!
One of my German friends told me they used cranes to delivery certain things up there so that might be it . I also heard they are doing construction to build some type of lift for the elderly and handicap. Fun times when I visit last year.
The first castle was destroyed in early 15th century, the second castle was in the early 17th century tranformed into a modern fortress, which was not sereously attacked. In 18th century fortresses lost their importance and the owners, the swabian ( catholic ) branches had been only unimportant counts, they had not been rich and decided , to not spend much money for the fortress. In the 1820s the german ,Romantik' started and medieval things became popular, so visitors came and noticed, the buildings are in bad condition. In the 1840s the prussian king vistited the castle, perhaps in 1849 when the swabian Hohenzollern deciced to give their lands to the mighty prussian relative. The king decided to rebuild the castle in romantic style, so the current castle is from 19th century, where still horsepulled wagons had been necessary, but also some modern construction equipment existed. The building was more a monument than a resicence. Because there are fake fortifications, perhaps also prussian engeneer troops had been involved. I
@@StunningVideos Because, like most who watch these videos, I don't live in Germany. So that's why people rely on RU-vid video producers to see as much as possible of these great estates. That's where people like you come in. Hence my comments.
@@robertrobski1013 Yes, in imperial times there was an Chancellor too they have nothing to with each other, our president would be replaced with our Kaiser theoretically
SORRY .......
