I played the Hohner String Performer dry, without any effects.
The Hohner String Performer is a fully electronical string machine made in Germany. It has strings in 3 footages (CELLO, VIOLA, VIOLIN), which are mixable via volume faders. Also CLAVICHORD and PIANO presets, all free mixable. Each half of the keyboard has these features. A bass preset can be added to the left half of the keyboard.
On the right, there is a simple monophonic preset synthesizer with 4 presets: BRASS, STRING, CLARINET and PLANET. To be honest, I didn't know that a planet could be a musical instrument - but Hohner should know :-)
The String Performer is fully polyphonic and has a decent analog string tone. It is quite large and heavy.

I got three string-machines: Vermona Piano Strings, the Elka X-705 Organ which has the built-in Elka Rhapsody 610 and the Hohner String Performer. I bought the String Performer really cheap with some defects. It was not very difficult to fix them, now it's properly working. The ohner has a less "rough" sound (caused by the Enseble Effect) but it sounds much fuller, especially in the bass notes. And the preset monosynth has some nice and useful sounds. So the Hohner is my favourite stringer.

I have been looking for a String Melody for over 2 years with no luck. The Hohner line was inexpensive and has some great sounding strings. The Roland RS-505 was also a good sounding string machine but they go for big bucks these days. Some people say the ARP Solina was the best string machine but they all sound good to me. Thanks for the post.

It's a Logan String Melody with a Hohner label I believe. There was another Hohner - I had one - that didn't sound nearly as good. It was an Elka Rhapsody 490 with a Hohner label. The Logan was the best-sounding analog "string machine" ever made, in my opinion. All of these were based on the electronic stage organs of the 60s. They just changed the oscillators and added filters to get the string-like tonality. This just sounds amazing. No digital synth ever sounded this good.

great strings they were also available - absolut perfect with solo voices - on the early Hohner Symphonie D98 with a very special and great Heavenly String Chorus Generator - never had been before and never has been till now

The bass notes and filter sound surprisingly good for what must be divide-down polyphonic instrument.

The Logan/Hohner String Melody sounds different. But the Hohner String Performer's sound architecture is similar to the String Melody - upper and lower with 3 mixable footages. But the Performer is less noisy and has clavichord and piano sounds in addition.

Cripes, i had this as a kid. I remember one of the buttons on the left side wasn't working right..i was trying to get it to work by tapping it with a drumstick but started tapping to hard and the drumstick broke through. I think the keyboard is still at my dad's house.

Wow, that one sounds nice. Great playing, as well (esp. near the end). A lot of usable settings on it seems too. I like how "evocative" the tone of those string machines is, it's almost like hearing the soundtrack of a nice old movie. I think none of the "conventional" analogs can really replace them.

Your demo of this keyboard made me search one for a long while. I just found one in Germany but it seems I made a bad catch. So many repairs have been done inside plus the unit stopped working after only one week. Something blew up inside with smoke coming from left panel and some sounds are not covering all the keyboard anymore, cello and bass have fully stopped working too. I need to take it to a tech but the age of pots and push puttons realy makes me think it might not worth it. I mean if only spares would be availabe or equivalent ones I would not hesitate a second but they ain't. Anyway thats the only string machine demo without effects that made me want to buy one. Many people find the Solina sound fatter, it might be but there is a little something to the String Performer sound I prefer. Plus with all the possible combinations it's a very interesting keyboard for its age..

I've found one in an abandoned House yesterday! Apperently it was very dusty and so on. But: Its kinda dead, no voices at all, just a fuzzy weird sound coming out of of my amps. I'll try my best with cleaning all contacts at first. Been dreaming of synths since I was little, and there it was. Kinda has a Abba-esque sound, in my opinion. Altough they've been using a Yamaha GX1. Analog greetings from Germany Jens

Wow...thanks for the vid! I hadn't paid any attention to this stringer. From a specs point of view it's quite similar in features to the Farfisa Syntorchestra. But with the clav and piano settings, it's quite unique at the same time. Definitely a JMJ sound happening here. Run through some EQ and a delay/verb, it would be quite the awesome synth! I really love these paraphonic stringers. Have kind of a fetish for them actually ];P

There was famous "Planet" preset on early preset synths (Roland Sh1k, Sh2k) that actually imitated "Moog" sound. Resonant filter sweep down.

The Hohner String Performer was very common in Germany as a live keyboard, but outside Germany it was rare and unknown. That's why very few artists played it on their recordings.

Wowww beautiful sounds and playing. On the funny side, your cut off hands remiinded me of the 60s TV show- the Monsters....comedy. I sure would like to see a keytar with the Hohner string sounds and features (built in). I am not into shredding that the keytar manufacturers kind of focus on. My take, if its a keytar, the primary voice (with many choices) should be the guitar and bass, then the strings, then the other sounds.... How can you play lead and accompaniment with the keytar? tnx Ed

I've owned the Mark IV Hohner, a Crumar Performer, and a Crumar Orchestrator. Out of those, the Performer sounded the best. But, it isn't as good as this Hohner/Logan. The second-best sounding string machine is the Arp Solina. (Think "Dream Weaver" by Gary Wright.)

I had it slightly wrong; there is usually only ONE single oscillator, from which ALL the notes are generated. Have a look here: xils-lab . com /pa ges/X ILS-V%252b_TopOctaveDivider . h tml

Most usually, they have one oscillator per octave and use divide-down technology divide the oscillator pitch by 12 to produce the 12 semi-tone notes in between - 11 less oscillators needed per octave! electronicmusic . wikia . com/wiki/Divide-down . With synths like the Korg PE-1000 and the Korg PS series, you can tune individual notes in the scale for non-even temperament music.

on the instrument, it says "planet" :-) it's not my mistake...
@darwinsaye
@darwinsaye 7 лет назад
Hohner Pianets are electro-mechanical pianos that produce sound via vibrating reeds, like a Wurlitzer (I can attest to this as I own one). Worrell played an electronic piano called an RMI Electra Piano (I used to own one), which has electronically produced sounds rather than mechanical reeds. *Planet*, on this Hohner refers to a synth sound. :)
