I didn't even know there was a Papal route for Italy until you mentioned it at the start. But the communist path sounds like it'll be cool, so I can't wait to see what happens in it! Though, their democratic path also sounds like it could be cool to see you do eventually.

My guess is that it's only to prevent historical ai from absolutely shattering if AI Italy fails in Ethiopia.
