Excellent Video you two. Loved the Oldies Hoists and especially at the very last of the video the Drill head. That was quite interesting to see and very heavy for Julie. Thanks for taking us along and enjoying the adventure with you both. I for one Loved it!!💕💕🐇🐇

My Grandma said that the reason Bottles have different Shapes was so that in the old days when most Homes had no Electrify you could reach into a dark pantry and find the Food or Product that you were looking for by the shape of the bottle. We have a Old Mining Ghost Town near us and aside from the Cool Grave Yard the only thing left is the Old Safe from the Assay Office. That is a Steam Cylinder on the Hoist and I'd bet that that Round Foundation nearby was the Boiler Mount and the Big Tank it's Water Supply. 32:14 Awesome and Valuable Artifact, Hammer Drill Bore Hole Button Bit worth about $2,000 New and I'd say Cleaned up that one would fetch as much as $300 Used, Bore Holes are used mainly as access points for Mine Infrastructure like Pipe, Power and Signal Wires etc. but sometimes for Ventilation too. As a Retired Lode Mine Owner / Operator and now Homebound Disabled in the Line Wildland Firefighter I always love your videos, your narrations but especially being able to share some of my vast Mining Knowledge with everyone. Seeing for a short second, the head-end of the cylinder of that large hoist @ 7:12 mark, shows it has a water cooling jacket in its casting.. this hints that it very much could’ve been self-powered by gasoline or kerosene (hit & miss vs Throttle governed). Either way, from the looks of the damage to the back-upper edge of cylinder casing and, that very hefty crank being totally broke off, indicates that poor old hoist had one heck of a major death!!! Must’ve tossed its demise noise throughout that entire area, when she blew up! Yet another FANTASTIC video from you two!! Thank You BOTH! Keep up the exciting adventures/explorations!

That hoist was outstanding! I like that you called the cable, wire rope. The miners did call it rope. I always crack up when you ask Julie, should I try it? And without hesitation she says, yes! Hoist is a Fairbanks Morse Model N. Likely a 15hp hoisting engine. Gasoline powered with "hit and miss" speed control. Common hoisting engine in the western US. Ignition is accomplished by hot tube or mechanical ignitor low tension coil spark ignition. Probably manufactured between around 1905 and 1920. These could winch themselves may miles to the minesite. Very cool find!

Hello Tom and Julie, The first building has some joist hangers in the roof so it's not all that old. I'm going to agree with the comment that the hoist was internal combustion. It looks like the rod pinned to a piston and there was no slide as in steam or air. The carb or injection and valves would be on the cylinder head which is all missing. There did not seem to be any manufacturer's name cast into it anywhere. The main gear had very little wear on it. Thinking it had very little use. Glad to see you and hope your holidays are happy. dave

Reminds me of the New Idria , Cinnabar mines and camp that's between Coalinga and Hollister in the Hills. On the Coalinga side going through the Clear Creek BLM there are multiple mines ( Gems, Coal, Asbestos, Gold ) etc

5:33 That looks like a hit-and-miss single cylinder gasoline power unit. That is why the large flywheel (To store energy to keep the hoist smooth). Notice the inner cylinder with external water jacket for cooling. 9:26 When ever you find an adit like that one, no minerals and straight, it will intersect a crosswise vein. It was just haulage. 10:49 Notice the floor that shows where the cross ties were placed. At some point the tracks were removed. 32:23 When they drill deep air holes down into a works, they use pneumatic track drills. That is a cutting tip for one. Good camera work. Pans are smooth and good narration.

I really like that drill bit, you're right looks like a well bit not a blasting or core bit.

Loved that hoist. What a massive flywheel. The mine looked like it would be a nice hike. And the (sorta) mohawk guy (1924) was interesting. A lot of fault walls probably gave this mine a good yield. I follow Mount Baker Mining and he's opened his own mine and shows mineralization. It's been good to see his mine because he's showing how the mines were found, why they tunneled and stoped where they did and the hot zone. I think you climbed into a privy. I was picturing their makeshift outhouse and then throwing a bit of lime. Thanks for this excellent adventure.

Hello Tom and Julie it's wonderful to see you out again.That shure was a big old hoist, it's amazing some of the equipment that the old-timers had. It makes you wonder how they ever got it to where they needed it. Very smart and capable. Also a great example of classic faulting. I'm still amazed at the way nature creates and shapes things. Wow that drill is expensive I'll bet the people that lost that are sorry. Anyway thanks again for another great video I enjoyed it very much. Hello Julie and Tom. That's kind of wild that little hole exposing the shaft. I wonder if they broke through and saw the shaft than just stopped. I am always amazed at how they miners could get such huge equipment out in the middle of nowhere. That one flywheel was over Julies head.

I worked in a shop that made large bearings. You would have to use a torch to heat and then split the two sides of the casting.

Or was it just crossing back and forth on one fault? The slick wall kept changing sides as you were walking in. I always enjoy seeing Julie and You explore new mining site’s, thank you !!!

That was quite the big hoist. Makes me wonder how they got that out there. I would think, first as close as a train came to there. I would also think it was in parts and assembled on were it was left. Also makes me wonder, did they just take their gold and run or did they go bust and couldn't afford to move it to a new mine? I would think they could at least sell it to another mining operation.

That bat guano is worth some $$, but it would be a shifty job. Though all it would take is a dust pan, brush and a bag. I remember way back around 1990, at a greenhouse, it was like $15-$20 for a small bag, think it was only an ounce.

IMHO: Probably a steam hoist. Piston bore is too small to have generated much HP off of an air feed. Also I think there are probably steam portals in the walls of the cylinder. Lots of parts are missing off of it.

This mine seemed to go on for ever but didn't seem like much of a vein to follow
