My SG5s have developed a rip at the flex point. My new trail code boots also show lines at the flex points with less than 5 miles , wearing them into the grand canyon this weekend, so we'll see
Same major issue with Speedgoat 3's. I turned a pair back after 60 days and Hoka sent second pair free. Second pair same issue. The bad part - I'm not a runner!! Bought for daily walking for sore feet. Didn't use them as intended and overlay cracked and peeled on TWO pairs.
This has been the most productive years of my life ,it s so cool hitting 53 and running good style (not great )but starting to feel strong ,18 people in the last year or so have asked my age ,totally getting this /lol hope I don’t sound like an ego maniac ,life is beautiful ni power punch being able to do this stuff ,cheers from Bonny scotchland

As a trail shoe they are good at handling average terrain & terrible on steep technical terrain. At this price point Salomon & La Sportiva overall make better trail shoes that perform better ( S-lab ultra, speed goat, bushido) MySpeed Goat 4 are falling apart after 3 weeks & 150 miles, just not up to the task of mountain trails & feel like a real liability /danger on technical descent. That being said they were reasonable on a 50k easy trail run I did, nice rebound & looked after the legs with cushioning.
My road shoes (Hoka One One Bondi 6) top mesh portion separated from the rubber bottom (right shoe) at apx 350 miles. Got new pair of Salming Trail 6 but MY calf in my left leg got strained bad...missed two weeks of running. Ugh. I decided I need a shoe wih more cushion so I have gone back to Hokas. I just bought a pair of Hoka Speedgoat 4. I pray both me AND the shoe stay in one piece. I wish I would have seen your video first 😲
Thanks for your review! I have the 2 and 3 versions of the Speedgoat which I like better than this latest 4 version. To me the Speedgoat 4 upper is stiff and feels narrower. Plus the the rubber peeling away problem you pointed out. Fortunately I found a 3 version on sale.
Wow. I have a pair of Speedgoats I bought 3 years ago. They've been my trail shoe, my hiking shoe, and now they've retired to my barn shoe, and the lamination style is similar if not the same, and hasn't delaminated at all! The tread obviously took a beating on our rocky trails, but the rest of the shoe held up great. I hope they replace them for you!

@@tayjay1164 I am still running in the same pair and have done a couple more videos on them. I have run about 5 ultras or more in them so far will over 300 miles on them.
The upper suffered the same issues. Into my 200km through multiple trails and streams, the mega grip is starting to wear out. Overall, very comfortable.

I feel like you do, that shouldn't delam right where your crease is. I almost just recently ( 1 week ago) bought that exact shoe. I'm running in Hoka Torrent and love them. I've been wanting the speed goat so cant wait to hear what they say and how they hold up.
I don’t blame you for being frustrated after paying $145+ for a shoe and have an issue like that. I’d recommend the Hoka EVO Speedgoat as it has a superior upper in its MATRYX Kevlar upper. Doesn’t have the overlays like the Speedgoat 4 and is lighter. Cost a little more though.
20 miles in and I experienced the same issue. Had to return the shoe, retailer said they have lots of claims on the model for exact same reason - delamination. I'm really gutted cause the shoe itself is really really good performance-wise, loving the fit and cushion. Will probably go back to SG 3
I ended up staying with the show an loved it ..other than that minor issue. I will be running a 12 hour race in them. I have run many more training runs on the trails and had many river crossings...they stayed together with no more issues. I have three pair of Speedgoat 4's. I have completely worn out the soles of my first pair to the point that i'm into the soft foam at the heal. No delamination at all in any of them. Maybe they have corrected this issue?? Great shoes!
It's a problem with SG4 first series as I was told by Hoka - they will replace my shoes, happened this in the first day after 10km of walking and running. But I'm also having a problem that when you walk/run and a shoe folds on top of my toes, it presses on my toe bone and hurts really badly. I hope this problem will be solved with the replacement SG4 pair.

@@MG-jz1eh hello, I'm thinking buying these shoe for hiking/backpacking, because I have leather boots (salomon) but for easier terrains they are simply to much hard, so I am looking at a trail shoe to do this king of terrain. I am looking to this model and Altra Lone Peak 4.5, and I was almost decided for this, but as said, for a 145$ shoe I was not expecting this to happen. So can you please tell how are the substitute pair behaving? Thanks a lot

I absolutely loved these shoes until I experienced exactly the identical issue. The lamination started to buckle and then the notable "flap" on top of the shoe box separated and flapped in the wind like a flag on top of K2. This occurred with the shoes having less than 20 miles of light use. I glued the flap down..... unsuccessfully. I left them in the trail head trash.
Does delamination affect performance? I bought for hiking. Delamination is "trail cred", like sun bleached paint on a 94 yj used to hit the beaches for fishing or hanging out.
I really liked the looks of this shoe, and I keep reading about how good they are for flat feet/ heavy overpronation. But this makes me not buy it. I'm looking for a shoe I can wear everyday, not for trail running. Any recommendations? I like the modern look like on shoes like the new balance fresh foam
I have many reviews on the Mizuno Inspire and Horizon....they are a support shoe and my go to for many, many years. The Speedgoat is a neutral shoe and would not be good for overpronation or flat feet.
I have run short distances on the road from trail head to trail head, felt good but you will wear down those lugs fast which isn’t great for the shoe. I never attempted to send them back and kept running in them...running a 12 hour race in them in 3 weeks
Have not tried the Acics yet, but I still love the Speedgoat 4, (made more videos on it) but it did get worse....didn't effect the function. Many have had the same issue, but many have not.
@@motivationtheoryrunning they are still my favorite trail shoes especially for longer runs. Planning to do a 58km 4000m elevation ultra trail. The extra cushioning feels really good for long runs
I assume the glue they used or process was flawed...it didn't affect all shoes, but it was a big problem for many, but first I have heard of the heel having an issue.
The same for me ... after 1 month of use this shoe seems to be 2 years old, the upper part goes down in a horrible way, it is deforming and it doesn't seem to last long ... with what it costs... any opinion on the hoka direct warranty?
Thanks for this review and heads up. I ended up getting the Speedgoat 4 and I’m loving it. I’ve run about 15 miles in it already. I just have a question about the delamination. I see creases forming naturally on either side at the front or the shoe based on how it stretches when you run. It’s not actually coming lose from the material but you can see the white corners on the blue upper (I have blue/primrose). Did your delamination start like that or did the material just totally come lose from the material below?
It started at the creases of the shoes the left was worse than the right. I did a video discussing it a bit more last week, the entire Hoka review playlist in at the top of my channel...love the shoe!
Motivation Theory Running thanks. I just checked and saw my entire tongue has delaminated after 15 miles. Not sure if it’s because it got wet yesterday. Either way that shouldn’t happen. Anyways going to take them back. The store will send them back to the original supplier for a check and then I’ll likely get a new pair.
Damn it! I have just purchased the speedgoat 2 mid gtx and see the same damn delam pattern about to form at those exact creases!!! What the heck Hoka! Noooooooooo!
@@motivationtheoryrunning Still completely agree though dude- pay a lot.for these shoes and it should not really happen! Just looked at one of my nike gore-tex and they have a similar overlay actually. When flexed, there is absolutely no crease pattern in that same overlay - so definitely seems to be bad quality control/process here from Hoka!
