A road trip over snow an ice through North West Hokkaido, Japan, in the middle of winter. Features vision from cam mounted on windcreen with relaxing music. Starting in Asahikawa, to Wakkanai via Haboro, Mombetsu, Abashiri, then back to Asahikawa. Seven days in less than 8 minutes. Dedicated to the road crews that manage to keep these roads open in all but the biggest of snow storms. Production music by Moby, used under licence.

あんなに北海道の冬が嫌で東京に移住したのに、上京して25年、コロナ禍で小樽の冬が恋しくてたまらない。心が癒される動画ありがとうございます。

Hi Tracy. Google maps says its just over 2 hours drive from CTS to Asahikawa. For driving carefully in winter, and allowing for bad weather, I would double that. Of course there are several routes you could take, the fastest being via the expressway. If you choose to go that way make sure your car is set up with an expressway pass. I agree that you should plan to do this in daylight hours.

I was driving up to the various speed limits applicable - between 40 km/hr and 80 km/hr. Sometimes I would be traveling at less than 10 km/hr. Keep in mind that to make the video more interesting, the footage has been sped up, so it does look faster than I was actually traveling. The car was an all wheel drive sedan equipped with winter tyres.

Basically if you're a tourist not used to winter driving then take a train is a better option. Faster and safer than driving, every site keep advise not to drive in the winter unless you need to. At this speed it's going to take forever to go anywhere city to city travel would take almost half a day at this speed.

You also have to factor in that some days the roads between towns may be closed for the day because of heavy snow, which will disrupt your travel plans. This happened during the filming of this video. Next time I will be taking the train between cities and picking up a car, where necessary, for local travel.

If you are thinking of driving in Hokkaido in winter, one thing I would stress is that you should drive to the conditions. Sometimes, if the hard-packed snow has been blown away by strong winds, there is ice below. In those conditions, driving at even 10 km/hr (6mph) may be too fast as you will have very little grip when you brake. Drive safely.

Great footage Nick. So what did you do after when they closed the road to Abashiri? I think when the bad weather hits, not even the road would closed and also all public transport, my friend got stranded in Asahikawa last months for two days because trains are stopped. I'm planning to do a in Hokkaido next winter with other 3 friends, at the moment we are more leaning towards drive around than taking public transport. Myself have pretty decent winter driving experiences, but they all in good weather unfortunately, and I heard the bad weather in Hokkaido winter is in different level. My main concern so far is the part between Asahikwa to Abashiri and Abashiri to lake Akanko. Assuming the weather is good not in blizzard situation, is it still hard to drive in those remote area? Regards, Kenny

Hi Kenny. When I was turned back, I returned to my hotel in Mombetsu and booked an extra night. Then I asked them to ring my hotel in Abashiri to cancel that night's booking. The next morning the road had been cleared. It really is a matter of luck with the weather. I've now been to Hokkaido for the past five winters and have never had a train cancellation. If the weather is bad enough, you will get stranded however you go - even flights get cancelled. In fact, they can get cancelled before trains. If the weather is good and you've had winter driving experience, you shouldn't have any problems. All the best, Nick.

Hi, I am planning to rent a car during Christmas in Hokkaido, not much experience in driving in snow, but I will be very careful. Drive from CTS to Asahikawa possible on first day? Can't really drive after 5pm as it is dark?

With weather there are no guarantees! This video was shot in February 2016. I was also driving in Hokkaido in Jan 2018 and there was lots of snow then too, although not quite as much as in this video.

HI, I planning a trip to Hokkaido road trip during April 2018 (1-8 April) still winter time, is it dangerous to drive ? Any advise ? where will you recommend to drive ? we are first time to Hokkaido , family 8 of us, need to rent MPV. what is your advise ?

Hi! I have to let you know that I don't live in Hokkaido, so I do not pretend to be an expert. Also I have never been in Hokkaido in April. I have been in January and February, the middle of winter! At that time driving can be dangerous so you do have to drive very carefully. Have you driven on snow before? If not, there's lots of information on the internet about it. My feeling is that in April, driving in the south part of Hokkaido would be easier because some of the snow on the roads would have melted. In the north, I would think most roads would still have snow on them. This link shows the most popular places to visit in Hokkaido. For Sapporo and Otaru you will not need a car. Enjoy! www.tripadvisor.com.au/Tourism-g298143-Hokkaido-Vacations.html

Great video. Love the quality. I am traveling to Hokkaido in late March this year. I believe its still going to be cold with some snow. I am looking to rent a car also. Do you think driving conditions in late march will be extremely difficult (snow and ice on the road)?

Hi Steve, can pls advise what was your experience driving in late March this year? We are planning for a drive trip in Hokkaido from 23 March to 1 April 2019. Wonder if it is safe to drive to Niseko? Many thanks in advance for your advise.
