The Hungry Brit Abroad series is back. In this episode, Rhys is at the "Hokkien Mee Halal" stall in Petaling Jaya, Selangor, Malaysia. He's here to try a reasonably controversial dish that has built a name for itself as a Malaysian favourite - "Hokkien Mee". Hokkien Mee is usually prepared with pork fat and lard, making it not permissible for Muslims to eat, however at Hokkien Mee Halal they have adapated and changed the recipe to make it using only Halal ingriedients and can therefore be enjoyed by all.
In this episode Rhys is with Auntie Monica and her husband, Uncle Jamal, where they share the story of how they started the business and the challenges they faced introducing this food to their customers.
Both Muslim converts, or "mualaf" it took Uncle Jamal and Auntie Monica took years to perfect their recipe and create a Halal version of Hokkien Mee. It tastes so good!
