Uncovering previous bad repairs is half the fun of restoration, it can be like archaeology!! Looks like you fellas aren't too far from our hometown of Grantham where my son and I restore a few old relics ourselves. It's difficult to produce regular content for RU-vid so your efforts are appreciated so keep up the quality work.
More than you would beleive! The trick the old school guys used to do is get the Body Filler with metal filings in it so the magnet sticks to it, even grind up some yourself and add it to normal filler..
I loved seeing the Toowoomba Range. I've only been up it once back in about 1973, Dad was driving the Statesman with a twenty foot van behind. It held about 50mph while an MGB tried to drag us off. The 308 done well.

Good old bog . Bog with fibreglass mat inclusion is very very strong and light . Best bog to use is called Micro Balloons . It’s dark purple in colour widely used in the boat building industry . It’s extremely strong

GTR stands for Grand Touring Rally. Holden were not allowed to go racing, due to a GM corporate ban on racing. But rally's were permitted. XU1 was the performance option pack which could be ordered for GTR Torana's, which owners may put to 'heavy duty' use.
Hey there's speculation that the XU1 that won Bathurst in 72 in the Museum isn't actually the right car due to HDT re-bodying the 05 car for 73 season and the real car actually ended up in Dick Johnson's hands and became the Queensland holiday homes 10 / 17 car. Actually was converted back to a road car in the late 70s and the current owner ended up with quiet a windfall unsuspectingly! (It seems all pictures of this car have been removed from the internet as I can only find ones of DIck's Zupps SPorts Sedan or the black 73 season car)
My understanding is the 28C car was sold off that year to a private racer and ended up on its roof at the 74? Bathurst race. There is an article in the Aus muscle car magazine but I cant remember what issue. was only a year or so ago. Apparently it raced up to the mid 80's and is now restored to it 28c scheme. but I stand to be corrected. Actually have a look if you can at the 74 race of the Tori on its roof at forest elbow, from memory the announcer mentions something in that tellecast

I can’t wait to see how much more bog is in the torana cause im guessing the people who did the original work had shares in a bog factory. I used to be a panel beater & had a "restored" SLR 5000 come in for a crack in the middle of the left-hand side quarter panel. started digging into it & the bog was 10-15mm thick, had a word with the customer & ended up just getting the rid of the bog that was lifting then did a bog blend (He had just brought it, paid way too much).
Oh that brings back memories...I changed a clutch on my mate's XU-1 during our (30 minute) lunch one day. Of course us dinosaurs know that this was a mechanical clutch so it was pretty easy to do then.
working part time in the 70's - the boss would throw a spanner at you, if you did not get a oil change, plugs leads and points done in 15 mins on a holden 6 - at least there was plenty of room clutch change was easy enough on a 3 speed box, and every tool box had either a spare input shaft or properly machined broom handle with holden on one and and ford / chrysler borg warner on the other
All XU1s are GTR 82911 based Cars and the XU1 is a Option Performance Package that you ticked to get the XU1 Performance Package parts put on a GTR based car from the Factory. Why it's GTR xu1 on that Decal.
Torana in most languages around the globe means gateway. According to (Holden torana) it means to fly, also it is an instrument for sound so depending on where you hail from is depending on what it means.
I have a 73 gtr. I thought mine was bad but wow, though it is a 50 year old car I guess, also plz back off the background music, I’d rather hear you guys talking, music is great when your time lapsing, but otherwise not so much, imao anyway! Have you tried using pickling paste on the steel to find where the welds are? We do it on stainless steel jobs at our work. After a little bit it shows excatly where the welds are.
The Holden Torana is a mid-sized car that was manufactured by Holden from 1967 to 1980. The name apparently comes from an word meaning "to fly" in an unconfirmed Aboriginal Australian language; some have mistaken the name as coming from Tirana, the capital of Albania.
I was a panelbeater for 40odd years, saw plenty of odd bog jobs, including chicken wire , balled up newspaper, and once ,a pair of overalls stuffed into a quarter panel of an eafalcon taxi in Melbourne. On that Tirana, why do afresh paint job, then pull it apart...
I've seen a loaf bread wrapped in chicken wire that was moulded into shape for a 1/4 panel repair ... the amount of bog was nuts ... and the bread had become this mouldy green rock hard 'nugget'
That car is from back when repairs were completed to a price, not to the quality you guys produce. Two guards, nose cone, radiator support. Chuck the original stuff away and replace all new 👍 Enjoy the updates. Thanks
The Torana would have to be my favourite. Dad had an LJ 2850 from new. Later gave to my sister and she swapped it for a f#$king Telstar Not happy. What Torana means ,don't know but the cars origins are Vauxhall Viva . See 4 pot version. Holden later released the Viva , a total shit box with a very well understood reputation all over Australia. Especially if a couple of hundred kilometres from major city.
need to take a digital DFT (dry film thickness) Guage when buying an old classic car... especially if it looks too good to be true. will tell you the thickness of anything over the metalwork
Looking at these old repairs they were done to a price when the old girl was at the low point of her depreciation journey these cars were all but worthless in the late 80s early 90s. Just fill the holes to get them through rego for another 12 months.
dont always assume some backyard guy did that repair i have seen many bodgy repairs like that done in panel shops by tradesmen because the customer or insurance company wanted it done cheap
most American car shows with so called professional shops from 5 yrs or more ago did cars like this, a lot of the newer shows seems to be a lot better with quality though, i saw one once, i think it was pimp my ride, where they just pop riveted an aluminium sheet about 2 foot long over a rusty cheese grater roof join on a Kombi ( cos aluminium wont rust again) and then just troweled on about 3kg of " Bondo" for a "professional" finish
Yes lj and lc are all like that pita front end when you get any damage, that's why they bogged it up rather unpick everything I don't blame them it's not that bad.
Bog was on "Special" the week they did that little LJ. Best thing for that car is to get it blasted back to bare metal and see what other nasties its hiding.

A magnet might not tell you the whole truth.....1) they only work for ferrous metals and, 2) Unscrupulous people have been known to mix in steel filings with their fillers untill the filler has a reasonable amount of magnetic attraction for deception of the 'magnet test' Usually my first test of anything suspect (unless the obvious signs like shrinkback, haloing or incorrect panel form are there) is by sound.
Well the old repairs are a bit rough especially the lower guard bog patch lol , but it’s held up for 15 years or something so can’t really complain about that , filler will always crack off if you hit it with a chisel 😂, car looked nice if not perfect, if I owned that car i would have just kept driving it and bought another one to get get built , almost a total waste to strip a car that still looked that good .
@@Sittinggood888 yeah upon watching the other episode afterwards I can see why the owner couldn’t live with it , the front guards I’d live with as they still looked ok but the driver door , the bonnet blisters and all the other stuff , gaps ect all add up to make it worthwhile plus it’s a gtr so I retract my comment it needs to be done . He will be waiting a while tho that car will take a long time to get into shape probably only scratched the surface now I’ve seen the other episodes , but whoever did the last job doesn’t deserve to be shot it was probably 20 years ago and could have been a lot worse at least they welded the guards on ect .
Imagine paying 6 figures for a mint car only to find dodgy past works. And having to fork out more money to have it properly repaired. Does it sometimes out way the actual value of the car or it’s simply an investment that is surely still going up in price.
The original XU1 front guard you are taking off, the original XU1 Flutes you need to cut out and keep and weld into the New XU1 Guard you buy from Rare Spares as the Flutes on the New XU1 front guards are not quite the same as the original flutes. Wait till you get the new guard and look at the Flute on the new one to the old one etc. At least cut the Flute out and keep it and give to the owner of the XU1.
Actually it is an internal option code and not short for anything. GM (USA) reversed XS1 - XY9 option codes for Holden Division Special Item and XU1 is an option code for a G.T.R. special vehicle equipment. I guess the GMH marketing department must of thought this seems a catchy name for a car and added a dash between the U & 1 on the decals to spice it up.
TORANA means forget about it there gone it's over they don't even race Holden & Ford any longer ,Bathurst racing can be men wearing Ford or Holden t-shirts running around the track .
