HOLDEN WB UTE BUILD #8, 308 STROKE or not to STROKE??
Holden 308 ENGINE TEAR DOWN BEGINS, we look into the engine closer to find out what type of Block, heads, manifold we have and see what condition it is in, are we going to leave it as a 308? or stroke it to a 355.... looking for around 420 - 450hp

Someone in the area near Newcastle just got a Gen 3 5.7 litre Chevrolet LS1 V8 engine bolted into their WB Holden Statesman !

if i could build my 355 again i would go with vn style heads and a full roller set up spend the money once and do it right the first time ;)

Years ago i got my 5ltr stroked to 355ci with Harrop stroker crank VN heads just a mild cam and was a very big difference in power to a 5ltr engine and wasnt to bad on fuel either.

im looking fwd to the power side of the build, VN heads is a good option. thanks for the comment it gives me something to think about 👍

If putting vn heads on maybe look at direct ejection, more reliable

Get ready to buy a lot of blocks, unless you are lucky. In the finishing stages of a mildly hot 355 and i am 6 blocks in to find one that is good enough, at 800 to 1000 each to buy, and 700 a pop to hot tank/crack test, measure and sonic, you can see why there is a great reason that everyone goes LS.......These Holden blocks are fcking hard work mate. 450hp is going to be very hard with a stock stroke, a 450hp 355 on VN heads is quite easy depending on which camshaft you want and how much comp you can live with.
@goldshiftgarage
@goldshiftgarage 11 месяцев назад
thats some good advice thanks mate, i agree the VN head 355 is probably my best option.

@@goldshiftgarage No worries. Hopefully the block is a decently low bore to allow you to get away with 30 or 40 thou over, I already have so much invested in Dash 3's or else i would be putting efi heads on in a heartbeat. If you dont mind short rear gears and a decent stall, an f288, mid 11s static comp, and even mildly ported efi heads will see any decently put together 355 up around 500hp.

if there is 1 engine I know its the 308, I've built a couple of the fastest in 1998 till 2003 we race the fast 308 in the country national record holder at 9'96 138mph stock crank and also built 1 of the fastest 355's went 9.40 142mph and in 1995 I race a 327 stroker which went 11.5 at 121mp back when fast street cars were making 12's, what a lot of people dont know that the volermetic efficiency of the 308 killed 350 chev VE, the 1st was an off set grind crank to take it out to 327 using sj chev rods, ported heads, speedpro forged pistons, crane cc288 cam you looking at about 480hp, the 308 we raced made 598hp with b-cast heads nitrited standard 253 crank there lighter, BME ultra light alloy rods, custom made JE pistons, TLF custom crane cam Ford lifters, 2.02/1.60 5/16 Valves titanium retainers, heads mods and porting by Peter Micheals, crane D-V springs, crane Gold roller rockers and stand girtle, fully ported stripmaster single plane manifold, 900cfm Braswell methanol carbi, mad crank trigger, 643hp with VN EFI heads with same work, the 355 688hp harrop lighten 355 crank, BME Utra light 6" aluminium rods, custom made JE pistons, custom 4 bolt block, -9 Yella Terra alloy heads, ported by Peter Michaels, Brodix satellite seats 2.05/1.60 5/16" valves, crane d springs titanium retainers and locks,Yella Terra shaft roller rocker, ported strip Master manifold, Barry Grant methanol gold claw carbi, custom TLF Custom grind Crane cam, ford 351 lifters, there's obviously more done in block work but thats the main componets I've had more 308's than you can poke a stick we gave away racing when I broke my back and spent 10years recovering and rehab, my newest is a 427 LSX Turbo, if they never made LS's I would still be building killa 308's I love them I would build a 355 yells Terra -9 heads I would buy Harrop gear and there manifolds are a good thing

thanks for all the info mate, i enjoyed reading all the specs n details you provided. sorry to here about your accident, backs take a long time to repair - i also have a rotten back ( 3 surgeries ) i hit the gym to stay strong these days. i am thinking VN CNC EFI heads, high rise manifold - not sure on the crank size as yet but will determine that when i chose the stroker kit - do you rate Skat cranks at all or would a Crane crank be a better option? thanks for watching mate, hope your enjoying the build so far, i have around 20 shed build built cars for the 6pack challenge race day. should be a fun day out

355 kit with 10.5-11 to 1 compression pistons and "VT" heads. I have Harrop inlet manifold on mine, don't be shy with the cam and exhaust system from the heads back🤑

Ha ha I doubt VGG actually licks it but hey at least ya know what it tastes like now ha ha. I've got a Chev Pattern 308 (Now 355) but kept with the original heads (heavily ported etc) bolted up to a TH350 Built by Sam at SA Race in my VL. Would take way too long to list everything, enjoying the vids, cheers. Leo.

Looks like someone has been in there before, they never came with Yella terra rockers, be interesting to see what the bores look like. Thought about going down the stroker path myself as mine needs a rebore anyway, just depends on your budget and how much power you want. 🍻

355 all the way 30% more torque . Or old skool 330 combo offset ground stnd crank with hemi rods will rev to 7k crane 288 grind solid cam

@@goldshiftgarage330 is a great setup. My current, soon to be replaced setup is a 333, uses a small journal rod and an SBC slug. Definitely a half hot thing but a 355 has a fair bit more power potential at a given rpm..

Not sure if you want to stay loyal to the the Iron Lion but in reality there are limits whilst running up a serious bill for only marginal results, perhaps in the 80's and 90's this was the go but today an LS conversion is the way to go where you are assured to leave the Foulcan in your wake
