We still are. There's always crap in the top 40, but the number of gems to discover and the ease of discovering them have both increased exponentially throughout my lifetime.
@crazysilly2914 A lot of people say that, but how exactly it all went down - IDK. Kurt killed Kurt. I'm SURE she was no help to his mental or physical health. I'm sure she made things worse. BUT - I don't think about that much. For ME, I just think she has ZERO musical talent. The only songs anyone liked (THIS song is a Gr8 example) from her were written by other people. She was beyond useless as a real musician. I have ZERO respect for her. BUT if Kurt HADDIN'T died, we would not have the Foo Fighters. Rock'n'Roll is crazy in that way. Still, she was always a mess, & 2-3 good songs (written by others) don't make ANYYONE a good musician. I'm just happy that she has FADED AWAY!!
Frank zappa put it about Hollywood. "Just sign on the line for a real good time. They just don't tell you when" Joe's garage song on Joe's garage album.
@@Jahn_Pah_Jonz see thats why billy C was a part of this song. Seeing that Smashing Pumpkins is noted here (per your comment). Had no idea and I am 43 years old. OMG sad I am.
Her music is brilliant, but IMO Live Through This was a vastly superior album. Not that this one isn't good, but it lacks the depth of her previous work.
I LOVE that Courtney is playing her signature guitar that never came in pink, only black and surf green. Frame by frame...such an awesome song that still holds up...
She was amazing in that Larry flynt movie., and even dated Ed Norton for a while. Only arguement I can give is, she plays a junkie wife in flynt movie, she played a junkie helping sid n Nancy score dope in "sid n Nancy " movie, I mean it's not to far of a stretch for her. She was just herself in a way. I'm not discrediting her flynt role, it was a really great movie anyway.
Well actually hole is grunge music, I love punk music too I think my favorite punk band is the stooges probably because they were the first punk band who started punk music, my 3 favorite grunge bands from the 90,s I would definitely have to say Nirvana and Hole and alice in chains.
@@StudMacher96 punk music is what started the grunge music, the first punk band was the stooges, green day is a punk band yes punk music was the grunge bands inspiration
Dude...most rock stars are problematic!!! Hollywood only trashes her cause they wanna blame her for Kurt Cobain's suicide. Most rock stars are just as fucked up on drugs and shit as she is.
Everything about this song is perfection!! The drumming is brutally precise, the guitars are electrifying, and Melissa's bass just growls!! Trip down memory lane when music sounded good like this
Produced by Michael Beinhorne who was making the heaviest sounding records of that era (Sound Garden’s Black Hole Sun, etc..) However, no one ever repeats working with him…. Too tough a task master.
@@MobiusMindedI didn’t realize Michael was such a taskmaster. I wonder how Deen Castronovo managed three albums with him. Maybe just because he did his drum parts in one or two takes then split.
@@PeachWNK watch the "Hit So Hard" doco about Patty Schemel. Beinhorne rode her relentlessly for days, if not weeks, and then put together a "worst hits" tape for Love so he could get Castronovo in.....
@@MrStrawberrywine1977 you can't really blame a whole generation to try to keep up with what came before them. Heck, I appreciate those who take the time to look through the music of the past or before they were born. In that way, music from past generations won't be forgotten or muffled by the newer ones. It's nice to reintroduce something like this to a new generation. Let's just hope this would start or influence another resurgence for this type of style.
exactly. it's so clear this song is not glamorizing hollywood, it actually seems to be saying - there's something rotting underneath the shiny veneer, and it stinks.
Indeed - Billy Corrigan has written many GR8 songs with BRILLIANT lyrics. If he haddin't given it to her, it may have come out as an amazing Smashing Pumpkins song.
Late 90s Courtney Love was the best Courtney Love. She looked the best, her vocals were the best, and most importantly she was CLEAN during this era. I wish Hole never broke up but she did say in an interview that it'll never be like how it was in the 90s and unfortunately, she was right. Still will always be a Hole fan.
Myk Jowett You're mistaken. Tina Weymouth was the bass player for Talking Heads. Melissa Auf der Maur has played in Tinker, Hole, The Smashing Pumpkins, The Chelsea and Hand of Doom. It's on her wikipedia page.
Those 10 Lady’s on body harnessed hanging All Day was a Tuff Day for All of them. !! Nancy bardawill Director Was a Incredable Director!! What a Honor For me To Work on this Masterpiece!!!
Saw Hole live at the Enmore Theatre in Sydney just after this album came out. Courtney played the entire concert with these thin leather bracelets on her wrist. At the end of the show, she took them off and the crowd started screaming for her to give them away. She looked around and pointed to this bloke, and he pushed his way forward. She held the bracelets out for him, but just as he was about to take them. she took them back and gave him her guitar instead.
without a doubt, first album was so good! And I know people will mention Billy Corgan's role in the success of this album, but fuck that! Courtney had to pull it off, and she did so with aplomb.
You're absolutely right like yeah early 90s was the pinnical but to be real post grunge music really started carving its way out into something far better
I love that she always had that honest contrast between what was expected of her- a perfect hollywood doll- and the more raw, real person she actually was. love her!
@Careful Icarus Arranging a song doesnt mean he wrote the bassline. Otherwise, we'd have to say that Lars Ulrich wrote all of Kirk's leads, James' rhythms, and all the basslines since he arranges all of Metallica's songs.
I’ve never gotten why people get so bothered when somebody hears of an older song because it was in a movie. We should be glad that this music is getting new listeners. It’s just my opinion.
It’s annoying because it shows a failure by their parents to introduce them to music from their time. I was introduced to 60’s 70’s 80’s and 90’s music growing up and that’s why I was able to detect the garbage music from my time in the 2000’s and 2010’s while my generation ate it up because they don’t know better
@@DrunkenSlob failure? Not everyone’s parents listened to the same genre! Plus, this came out when I was six and I damn sure wasn’t listening to rock at age 6 and my parents were already deep in their thirties and forties by then. What a silly comment.
It's a VERY different style than what I'm used to hearing and seeing, but I must admit I couldn't get it out of my head. it's an amazing song, Hole deserves more subscribers.
And she called out the actual issues that get manipulated into lies. The Pig Legions needed a sacrificial Harvey after the hurricane mop up. Love's comments and warnings weren't exactly heeded; probably because the rabbit hole goes so deep. Definite early trash talking on Rose McGowan.
Courtney really was something else, it's easy to forget with all the drama that followed but god damn what a one of a kind she was, a true female rockstar who wrote some great tracks.
@@TT-hl5ql No they did not. They literally did not write it. Billy Corgan co-wrote a couple songs for ‘Celebrity Skin’ and ‘Nobody’s Daughter’ and was credited as a co-writer, Kurt didn’t write any.
I don't care what anyone says I really love Courtney and Hole. Great music and Courtney doesn't candy coat anything. Which is really refreshing.. lots of love ❤️❤❤❤
theory: if courtney had died instead of kurt, people would either forget, or make her a legend like Amy. people forget that she struggled with drugs too. doesn't matter who you are: that's a fight that a lot of people don't make it through that others will never understand. edit: k ty for the 1k likes :) I'd like to make a clarification though, on this take. For some context, I'm not a courntey love stan/fan. I love her music, but as a person I think she's done some really horrible things. I'm not excusing her for any of that. BUT I always find people criticize her for misogynist or superficial things and need look more into nuanced perspectives, especially how we look at drug addiction (as you'll find in certain replies down below demonizing addicts). Thx
@@wendywhoisit1819 i don’t think so, people say that about courtney cuz she is a woman, they probably won’t say anything about kurt lmao , remember how misogynistic was society in the 90s and how still is
Thank you ppl seem to forget Courtney n Kurt were both heavy into drugs. They had Frances Bean taken from them when she was a baby I think bc not her parents were really messed up on drugs.. It's sad that Courtney n Kurt never got sober n stayed that way. I never could understand how he broke out of rehab like he did Courtney did hire a detective to find him it's not like she sat back n did nothing.. Its sad Kurt is gone n that Courtney may still be a hot mess. I haven't seen her in ages so I'm not sure how she is these days
Man this is one of those that instantly transports me back in time! Music was life, and my cd collection was my most treasured possesion. I must have bought this cd half a dozen times, at least! It was always getting borrowed never to return, left in someones car or house, carried in a stack with no covers or cases getting scratched all to hell. Used and abused till it was more skip than songs, or just gone missing but I would buy it over and over. Totally under rated band. Im sure every generation kinda feels this way, but being a kid in the late 80s and being a teenager in the 90s, had to be the best combination of all time. We had no idea how good we had it, and just how lucky we were. I just hate that my kids will never experience life like we did. It really is a different world we live in now. While there are some advantages I dont think they outweigh all the negatives, especially as far as getting to genuinely be a kid. Damn Ive gone from hyped and nostalgic to feeling depressed and homesick for a world that had long since passed, all in one rambling youtube comment!! Think I will go play girl with the most cake or doll parts for my daughter and watch her face as she hears it for the first time. I love watching her hear the music I listened to at her age. The look when she is surprised that she actually likes it and the realization I wasnt always just her mom. Damn Courtney and the Girls, done ran me through all kinds of emotions today! 😂
This reminds me of my dear friend Stefan who passed away at the age of 34 last year. He loved this song, and we would dance around in his room to it. RIP Stefan xxx
To clarify: Yes, Billy Corgan wrote this riff, co-wrote 5 songs on the album, and played bass on one track. Neither Courtney nor Hole have ever denied that. Courtney actually isn't a fan of the riff. Believing it to be "cheesy" and she supposedly even turned to bassist Melissa Auf du Maur (who shared her sentiment) upon first hearing it and said something to the effect of, "We'll write the most beautiful bridge and it'll be OK." She, however, has fully given Corgan his dues and totally credits that riff as being the reason the song was a hit. She says Corgan told her to trust him with it and that he was ultimately right. She says this in her Behind the Music special and on stage when she performed it with the Pumpkins in 2018.
Well I dont think she ever got around to writing it because this song doesn't have a bridge. There's only 3 parts and they are all repeated. She plays the verse for a 3rd time (the riff she hates) in place of where the bridge would be. So she couldnt have hated it too much.
I mean the hit on cobain was definitely brilliant. All the good ones arnt ruled homicides. She mask it well to with this drug addict groupie personality.!
All of the songs Amy sings when it’s just her and an acoustic guitar it’s amazing the raw vocals show much more depth and emotion and she can really do her thing
People were so rough on her. She was the voice of reason their whole marriage. My heart went out to her ❤️ she tried to comfort Kurt's fans instead of the other way around. 😭
when i read some comments i think to myself ppl really don't understand how fucking incredible and talented this group is. I love that ppl hate her and she always speaks her mind. she never became holleywood. she has stayed true to her roots...
