Hole in a Gas Tank Repair

People stole 2 gallons of gasoline and left 1/2 inch hole on my gas tank. I never understood why people have to steal. Now I have to fix my truck gas tank. Thanks for the video.

I fixed mine with a proper sized fine tooth bolt coated in JB Weld, worked perfectly. Just using the JB Weld on a hole that big didn’t seem like a long term solution, but I hope it holds for you

How did it hold up? I had a hole on the top if my tank from when I bought it. Crazy. There was jb weld already on it but it wasn't holding pressure and tripped the engine light, same code has faulty gas cap (tank not holding pressure). I removed. Cleaned and replaced with better jb weld. Said it would work on plastics and with gasoline. It worked for a while but is now leaking air and a little gas again. Im to the point where I've gotten all the old jb weld off again and the tank is off the vehicle. This time I'm thinking of, first obviously remove any remaining fuel, then clean good with water, let dry. Then attempt to weld the hole closed with a soldering iron and small amount scrape edge tank plastic material over hole. Either that or a nylon bolt with rubber washer, either tap out the hole or remove fuel pump to reach hand inside tank, put nylon bolt with rubber washer coming from inside, going out the hole, with another rubber washer and nylon nut on outside. Possibly thread the hole aswell and use some sort of pvc pipe glue that will fuse the nylon bolt and plastic tank hole together. Anyways any takes?

Cut out a patch out of the side wall of a cheap plastic gas container 4x the hole's diameter. I knew that would not melt. Put it over the hole using gasoline-resistant sealant like Seal-All or a 2 part epoxy resin like JB Weld. Check it once in a while, though. Gasoline resistant is not gasoline proof. There is always the possibility of a leak. But it will get you back on the road until you have the time and $$$$ to replace the gas tank

You forgot to use the sand paper before the vinegar and totaly cleaning the metal (tank) surface. The stick product is excelent for the metal surface but beeing very clean, no rust, no dirty, etc. Keep going.

I had a hole in mine from thief's my own fault for leaving the under cover off. It's a metal tank, I used an m8 5mm long flanged bolt with 1mm thread pitch, tapped the hole up to a 8mm thread, the tap was able bend the metal up inside the tank for a good thread length, used a copper washer and job done, my car has plastic under covers now so tank isn't visible but I have a drain plug now.

For those of you that a victims of theft. This will last the life of the vehicle if done correctly.

Only one problem. The JB weld material is hard as rock and the fuel tank is plastic which actually expands and contracts slightly based on temperature and weight. Eventually the two materials will seperate. Hopefully your repair is for a temporary purpose.

I had a minivan with a fiberglass gas tank. I did this and it outlasted the car 3 + years. Besides most mechanic shops didn't want to work on my old van.

JB weld is not petroleum resistant. Get a Gas tank repair kit from auto parts store. If can’t, get the pc-11 two part marine epoxy or fiberglass putty. No need to empty the gas tank or leave the gas cap off

My concern is will the fuel ( gasoline ) eat through it in time ?

I tried it. Maybe I didn’t do a perfect job. Half for nearly 3 months. Then today I noticed a leak. It’s slight but it’s there. So I’ll have to get it to stop then try applying more.

Just went outside today to turn on my car and I have 2 to 3 holes in my gas tank I don't have the money to replace a whole gas tank Will this work for that as well

Idk what J. B. Weld is made of . But they probably could have used it to glue tiles on the Space Shuttle !!

Great video. I bought the Jb steel but looks like the 2part epoxy works better. Just a few questions wat exactly were you using to clean the surface ? And how long does it takes to cure ?

I tried this same method before I saw this and it didn’t work for me. I added one step after cleaning and sanding. I cleaned the sanded area again and the lightly scored the area around the hole with a box cutter. I’m going to try one more time before installing the used tank I bought bc just the installation alone is over $400. I only used 1 thick coat of this particular epoxy. Hoping two will do the trick as it’s seemed to work for you. Still holding up? No leaked, no odor? Thanks for posting

So after you use vinegar you use it again after you was done to clean the surface

There's a product by JB Weld called Tank Weld. Probably more suitable.

Chewing gum works with the tank in the car full of fuel, it seals instantly and sets hard as a rock, anything high in sugar works

only a temporary fix, tried it on a truck tank with a very small hole and it only lasted about a month

Hey guys JB Weld is only a temporary solution ! Use a plug or fiberglass based epoxy dont be cheap ? One repair done right get a kit !

Gas thieves are now stabbing gas tanks so this might be good to have in the car just in case.

I think the fuel is going to eat the jb weld. This wont last long I'm betting. I've even seen jb weld gas tank repair kits with mesh in them not work, the fuel tanks plastic isnt poris enough to hold the jb weld. I've seen cracks repaired with a soldering iron before but never a hole. I have heard of people using a plastic oil bottle for donar plastic. Good luck

JB Weld doesn't hold up well to gasoline. Even after it's cured it gets soft and rubbery and eventually gets eaten away. The time it took to go get JB weld you could've just went to a auto store and bought a actual fuel tank repair kit

I agree it looks good.... but sooner or later it will let go and it will be when you are so far from home or a shop. Best to bite the bullet and just replace the tank and be done with it. Thats my 3 cents worth.....

J-B weld does't work good on gas tanks, there are better things you can use that works better.
