Hole in the Ground: Breathtaking Crater in Oregon’s High Desert

In this video we explore Hole in the Ground in Oregon's high desert. This mile wide crater is in the Fort Rock area. The area had many volcanic formations such as Fort Rock, Crack in the Ground, Big Hole, and Hole in the Ground. The landmark is only a few miles off of highway 31, and some of the roads can be rough. I explored Fort Rock and Crack in the Ground in videos a few years ago, should we check out more of this area?

This is now my most viewed video. A video about a dang hole. Wow. Here is a playlist that explores, adventures, and learns from the outdoors of Oregon: ru-vid.com/group/PLRiktW-RwVhXna_RRb_PsCMNw8nOLIgGT Here are two old videos on nearby features. Back in the '80s we used to go out here and on to Fort Rock from Bend or La Pine, and when you made that trip, you made it a whole day-long excursion, packed survival gear and food because chances are you would not see another human being between La Pine and the town of Fort Rock, and you drove at 45-55 mph the whole way. ...last time I was at Hole in the Ground, there were at least 20 cars there, five or six RVs, and packs of 20 to 30 year old Instagram influencers struggling to get the best selfie while throwing their trash on the ground, and riding motor bikes down the trails; just taking the whole place over and trashing it so no one else can appreciate it. I'm glad your video shows it much more like I remember before "they" discovered it a few years back.

I think a lot of the people we see in parks and on trials. Their main motivation is to go, so they can post photos. Not to enjoy being out. I went to Glacier two years ago. You need to have reservations long in advance. You cannot get into the park without a reservation. People get into their campsites after dark. Set up their pop up tent on their vehicle. Eat go to bed and leave before 8. On to the next campsite. While checking off trails all day. It was strange for us to watch the campground nearly empty out every morning, then be filled up again just as it gets dark. I think we were the only ones who had the same campsite for a week. The sight of full trailhead parking lots at every trail head just made me want to leave. One last thing. This is me being petty. Kids! the REI outdoor outfitter look is lame. You do not need gear, to take a 2 hour hike. All you need is shoes and clothes. Comfortable ones. It is possible to go on a hike without your phone / camera. I have many images from 50 years ago saved only to my memory. I can retrieve them all without an electronic device. I just can't send them over the internet. Nor do I want to. LOL

Heck, I have no proof of what caused that hole. In the past it could have been a hot water resivor for a community or lost city near by. It maybe a hole where a giant tree once stood and then was scrubbed from existence. The area may have been filled with valuable resources a long time ago and then mined. It may have been an area of high technology that don't match the current narrative so it was blown into obscurity.... Let's just call it an inverted volcano and call it quits.

Neither God nor bad, there are no volcanoes in New York. but there's a lot of other natural beauty and unique geological features. It's a very old landscape and it was changed a lot during the ice ages and the recessions which left the great lakes and a lot of other lakes and includes carving out the mohawk valley which flows into the Hudson River and scraping the tops of many hard granite hills to give us open mountain tops and beautiful vistas where they would otherwise be fully tree covered. Catskill park, Adirondack park, the finger lakes, the thousand islands on the st Lawrence River, the great lakes, oneida lake, lake Champlain, lake George, Niagara falls(and river), and thousands of other lakes rivers, mountains, meadows, marshes, and streams. Oh and the huge long white sand beaches of long Island. The Hudson Valley is incredibly picturesque too and is famous for the Hutson River school(art paintings). Check out the views from Anthony's nose, breakneck ridge, and the Hudson highlands, and the many huge parks just a short drive out of New York city.

It's interesting that plants are just starting to grow back and it's mostly sagebrush and pine trees. If you film a place like this please get a few close up shots of all the plants and rocks.

Pretty funny how unimaginative they are. But then you got the landmarks named after weird religious things or mountains named after guys who had never been there.

Nearly 15 years ago took a flight from Portland to Reno on a turboprop. These fly at a much lower altitude than a typical jet. A short, but not exactly pleasant ride. I remember looking down and seeing this crater like formation and being fascinated by it. I spent some time trying to find a name for it, with no success. Often in the back of my mind I wanted to get this answer. Thanks to the miracle of technology, I have it. I am not sure exactly which of these those formations I saw in the area, but at least I have the general idea and area. Thanks for posting.
@MattCookOregon
@MattCookOregon Год назад
Thats cool. Most people on those flights see Crater Lake and Mt Hood. Fort Rock is defiantly the most noticeable from these formations.

By chance I found your channel and I've subscribed. If Oregon was part of Canada I'd live there. We've vacationed on the Oregon coast, in the Cascades and in the desert for 3 summers when our kids were still at home. I worked at one time off and on out of Portland and loved that city. Those who live in Oregon are very fortunate indeed!

I drove our '05 Sequoia into Hole-In-The Ground back in 2017 but did not video it. I came back and tried to show friends ANY video of cars driving in there but AFAICT no such video could be found on YT. I was going to go back and record and try to be the first on YT with a vid of it but then, like a month later, Soft Roading the West posted a vid and beat me to it. Cool place.

One thing you didn't mention is those steam explosions shot rocks as large as 26 feet across, 2.3 miles away. Makes me glad I wasn't around then living nearby. That's for the refresher tour!
