The whole "get your insulin going" is a video all unto itself and is THE #1 THING I wish I knew when I was diagnosed. Even just a short walk or doing a bit of work on my bike in the garage, it's enough to DOUBLE my own personal insulin sensitivity
Couldn't agree more - it's SO HUGELY IMPACTFUL!!!! And it's really powerful because it's in our control, and that's really empowering to me because it feels like so little is actually in our control to be honest, so I'll take anything I can get!!
I did really good through the holidays last year. Very proud of myself. I’m a T2D and I’m going to have my DR test me for my insulin to make sure I’m still making it or not. I’m now on the pump and really like it.
I agree with so many of the comments about your helpful inclusive video. My immediate thought when I watched this was Andrea is so genuine, comforting, and what a sweetheart! Happy Thanksgiving to all, Pam
Oh Pam!!! You are such a sweetheart!! Thank you thank you thank you - I hope you had a wonderful Thanksgiving and will enjoy a fabulous Holiday Season ahead!!! 💙
You're so cheerful and it is contagious! I like the idea of bringing food to gatherings. I feel way better when I do it that way too. Thanks for another great video!
Hi! I was recently diagnosed (June) and this channel is simply amazing. Your videos are such an awesome source of information and inspiration. Thank you so very much for taking the time to do this, it is genuinely helping me improve my life and I cannot express my gratitude enough!
I love this video! Don’t deprive yourself!! Last thanksgiving was only a few months after being diagnosed and I definitely deprived myself. It took me many months to finally allow myself to eat my favorites. 💙
What you say about (not) skipping breakfast is interesting. Skipping breakfast itself is not a big deal for me, but if I don't eat all day for some reason, and then eat something very carb loaded, it can happen that the BG spikes substantially. Seems to be related to the ketone levels. I mean, if you are in a fasted state, your fasting ketones are higher, which is totally normal (no DKA). But higher fasting ketones seem to sometimes induce a temporary resistance. That's one reason why I generally eat low-ish to moderate carb amounts, but don't do a keto diet. (Another reason is that I love dark chocolate too much to do keto 😋
Wonderful advice as always! I tend to eat quite a bit more at family gatherings like Thanksgiving. I have learned not to take to much insulin at meal time, as it seems it takes longer to digest when I overeat. I am looking forward to using the delayed bolus feature on my new Tslim pump. Have a wonderful Thanksgiving!
I usually don’t comment on Line about my diabetes ( not much)but I was looking at your you tube videos and extremely impressed with your great presentations. I have been a type T1D for 70 years (seventy) before at home blood testing, boiled our needles , syringes and sharpened needles on a stone etc etc. been on a Medtronic pump for 20 years and very unhappy with the 770g system with sensor accuracy which has taken my A1C from low 6’s to near 7. i was looking for a better system and a diabetic trainer put me onto a dexcom g6 and showed me a new tandem which I am getting the first of the year. My Medtronic’s warranty is up then. I started looking for Tandem pump info and came across your RU-vid channel and it is best info I have ever seen on diabetes. All of your info is right on and i relate with everything you cover. great info for newbies. If you ever want to talk let me know, I dont get much of a chance to communicate with T1D. Thanks again for your info. Mac Mackenzie
Oh Mac!!! Thank you so so much for all your kind comments!!! And 70 years....WOW...YOU'RE the expert! You could probably give all of us so so so many valuable pieces of advice and guidance!!! I'm very excited for you to start your Tslim/Dexcom G6 combination - it's the finest on the market at present I think! I'm sorry about the FB message - I'm not very active on FB so here is the best place to communicate, I hope that works alright for you! Please please please accept my sincere gratitude for your amazingly kind words and know how much they mean to me given your vast experience with Type 1 Diabetes - absolutely incredible!!!!!! Wishing you the happiest and healthiest New Year ahead!!! 🌟
@@ShesDiabetic Mac mackenzie again I have a hard time not watching some of your videos really because you do such a great job getting real info out that that is the real T1D’S life. When I was first diagnosed in 1951 there was only 1 million known and 1 million unknown now I think there is 25-30 million known, really is an epidemic I only knew one other diabetic all the way thru collage and lived in a very rural area. Know body wanted to talk about diabetes so you were on your own. I grew up doing everything a could and accepting any dare to feel like I belonged. I could write a pretty good book/story on my life growing … if had the ability to write. I have been an engineering person all my life so English not my strong suit. I am getting off track here because my reply today is about my wife and I watching your taking questions video with your fiancé.We really had a laugh😄👍 and thoroughly enjoyed it . We will be married for 60 years in July and she has been one reason I did so well with really minimum complications. It made me think about the years we have been together and how diabetes has effected our life together, two stories that came to me right away we’re these. I never liked the feeling of high sugar levels and when I knew it was very high I used to go run 2-3 miles or so and she would keep pace with me with our car one night I was running for awhile and noticed the car was right on my heels (very close*) came close to running me over. She was mesmerized ?This was at night and on a back road. One night I my sugar was running low and she told me so, I told her I was fine and locked myself in the bathroom because I was fine. She finally talked me into opening the door. So if people think low sugar does nor effect you mental state=, that is a good example. There is 70 years of stories somewhere in my mind.😄 Anyway trying to tell you how great your videos and don’t stop, they are helping a lot of people and giving a lot of insight into T1D. Keep up the videos! Mac
All very well said and explained. When we visit my parents at Christmas, mum mum bought some digital scales as she knows I weigh everything. Count those carbs and don’t take more than you need to. Christmas is a lot of socialising and moving around so you’ll burn some if your like me. Have a very merry Christmas all. 🎅
Such a lovely thing for your Mum to do!!!!!! 😍😍😍 and great mention about the moving around!! So very true!! Wishing you and yours a very Merry Christmas too!!! 🎅🏻🤶🏻🎄
Thank you so much and you are so welcome here - I'm especially grateful for your curiosity and empathy - thank you so so much for finding me here and being so kind!!!
Thanks Andrea. I have highs and lows on Thanksgiving in spite of all of my efforts. It’s just whooping my butt!!! Then I feel guilty that I can’t get it right. At least I know I’m not alone. There aren’t a lot of people around me who understand. Sometimes it makes me feel like a leper. So, I appreciate your insight and your experience.
Andrea ...great post it's my first Christmas and I'm so anxious about it I wish I didn't have to worry about the numbers like a normal person but this really helped thank you so much you are just an angel ...I'm hoping I get through it and enjoy it and not let this get in the way xx
Oh Louise - YOU GOT THIS!!! I'm sure it's going to be somewhat different with diabetes a part of the situation this year - but with one step at a time and love and grace with yourself soaking up the joys around you - you will THRIVE!! I'm sure!!! 😘💙😘💙
@@ShesDiabetic thanks so much ...just have to keep positive my friend and not obsess about the numbers thanks so much love your videos cant wait for the next one xx
I see in my numbers always big difference between a meal at my parents and my family in law. My mother is a great coock and try always to make something delicious with a lot of small meals over a long time and low carb for everyone. I must there always look I count not to much carbs. When we go to my family in law, i got mostly not the right info, I have difficulties to count enough carbs and even when I count crazy numbers the numbers go extreme high. I would be not surprice that they add sugar to make it difficult for me. There I need always a promenade to get the numbers back right. I take there then also a low carb desert of my mother with me, but the meal before and soup result always in crazy numbers. The breakfast issue I have not. In the week I sleep to less because I work for associations in many cases to very late in the night. So in the weekend I sleep very long and then when their is less then 2 hours left before lunch I skip most off weekend breakfasts. And I have then quit good numbers, possible also because I go in most cases cycling after lunch then. Again just showing that diabetes can be different for each other patient.
Informative Video Andrea!!!Some Times we Can't Resist Some Food!!!😁😁 This is Gonna Be A Very Useful Video For All The Type 1's Out There!😊. Sending Lots of Love❤️💕😘🥰
Hello Andrea. Thanks for this survival guide. 👍 Informative video and awesome advices. I love your contents. You are the best. 💙 And I feel so hungry now, thanks... 😁
Joanne - you are ALWAYS the sweetest ever!!! THANK YOU!!! I hope you had a fabulous holiday season and please know I'm wishing you the most Happy, Healthy and wonderful New Year Ahead!!! 💙
YES! Exactly... no sense stressing out, it will ruin the whole day. I don"t have to worry about laying around after eating, with five grandchildren... lol
I'm a newly diagnosed (October) T1D and I've fallen in love with you and your videos. You are so positive and always make me smile while at the same time giving out loads of useful information. Thank you so much! 🥰
I'm so sorry to hear of your recent diagnosis! No doubt you are going through a LOT, but I am SO glad you've found me and are here and that you're enjoying the content - hooray!!! Thank you thank you thank you for your kindness and please know that you are not alone and I'm sending you all the very very best my diabuddy!!! Here's to smiling together through the ups and the downs! You've go this!!! 💙
Thank you Andrea for a positive and very informative video. And you are right in enjoying all the foods you love. And let it be known that it can be difficult to be gracious to the "good and thoughtful Aunt" that made that special "sugar free apple pie" just for you so you wouldn't feel left out, when the pie should have been left out in the car! But it is the thought that counts right. Enjoy. Monitor your CGM. Easy on the correction boluses'. And get back on the wagon again the next day.
I've given up on breakfast. I have tried everything imaginable for breakfast and I aways spike to 250+. It's not dawn phenomenon, I've check that. I drink coffee for breakfast and that's it. Best decision I have ever made was to give up on breakfast. I'm very hungry at lunch but I don't over eat.
You know what - that's awesome!! I think we all need to find what works for us personally so I LOVE that you've discovered this and have figured out a way around it - GOOD FOR YOU!!!!
That was the case with me as well , but after being on cgm and consulting with my doctor I figured out that 10 min of pre bolus for breakfast helped me lower that peak to 220 from 250+ . There is a wonderful video on this channel about prebolusing . Thanks to Andrea for her amazing dedication to live a happy and healthy life and also help the type 1 community.
Great video! I'm a strong supporter of the Move! Yo Bod mantra - whether it's throwing the football around or throwing down to my favorite holiday playlist, you gotta do something to get the blood flowing and counteract the carb-ladden stuffing, cornbread, cranberry sauce, sweet potato mashed potatoes, pumpkin pie, pecan pie...
Thx much ! Type 1 is the pits ! Starvation is the biggest flaw for diabetics who are uninformed, as it raises glucose levels astronomically !! I know, when I was an early diabetic I found this out when I came to the doctor on an empty stomach and excessive numbers ! He says, "Are you trying to kill yourself?!" 🥶
The last time our family got together I kept doing small bolus doses throughout the day watching the numbers. That being said I am a cranberry, potato and stuff girl. You can keep your pie! lol
You're emphasis on embracing and participating in special gatherings, including meals and goodies, reminds me of a principle I live by as a type 1 diabetic: "I choose to own diabetes; I don't allow diabetes to own me." Your advice, I believe, is spot-on and "fits" with how those of us who are diabetic actually experience the holidays and its unique challenges. Another excellent (and timely) video, Andrea. :)
I was hoping you’d address this!! When I was first diagnosed I asked my educator about going out to eat for my birthday. She said everything you said, and I didn’t feel guilty! Have a great holiday!
Like Andrea says: Diabetes and perfection don't go together. You gotta enjoy your life still. Do your best in these situations but don't deny yourself just for one more day or few days of good BG.
