Ask This Old House general contractor Tom Silva and host Kevin O’Connor build a toy box for Tom’s grandson.
SUBSCRIBE to This Old House: bit.ly/Subscrib...
Time: 4 hours
Cost: $100
Skill Level: Moderate
Tools List for Building a Holiday Toy Box:
Miter saw
Table saw
Router and rabbeting bit
Pocket screw jig
Drill
Clamps
Palm sander
Jigsaw
Brad nailer and compressor
Shopping List:
1x4” pine boards
1x8” pine boards
1/2” plywood birch panels
Pocket screws
Wood glue
80-100 grit sandpaper
Brad nails
Steps:
1. Cut the 1x4” boards to a desired rough length using a miter saw.
2. Lay out the boards for the front, back, and bottom of one side. Use the fourth piece to determine the angle for the top of the box. Mark the boards at a desired angle and cut it using the miter saw.
3. Repeat this process for the other side of the box.
4. Cut the stiles and rails for the front of the box at the desired length.
5. Using the table saw, cut dados along the perimeters of the side of the stiles receiving the panel and cut rabbets into the 1/2” plywood for the sides and front of the box. Keep the panel flush with the backs of the stiles and rails. Be careful to not cut the dados all the way through each board.
6. Cut the panels to size. The ones on the side should be at the same angle as the stiles.
7. Use the router to cut the rabbet on all the panels.
8. Assemble the sides using pocket screws and wood glue. Slide the panels in before securing the fourth stile.
9. Fill the pocket holes using plugs and the wood glue.
10. Sand all the pieces of the toy box.
11. Cut a rabbet using the table saw on the back of the two sides of the toy box.
12. Use the router to add a curve to the front edge of both sides of the box. Sand the sides.
13. Add a curve to the front of the box. Do this by putting a nail at the center of the desired arch, hold a scrap piece of wood tight to the bottom front corners, and trace the curve with a pencil. Cut it out using a jigsaw.
14. Add a cleat to the bottom of the front and sides of the box to hold the bottom of the box in place.
15. Cut a dado in the front, back, and bottom of the box to accept a divider.
16. Assemble the rest of the box using more pocket screws and wood glue.
17. Glue the bottom panel for the box onto the cleat, then secure it with brad nails.
18. Repeat the process for the back of the box.
19. Cut the center divider to width.
20. Slide the center divider into the dados in the front and back of the box.
21. Transfer measurements from the sides of the box to the center divider and cut it parallel to the sides using the jigsaw. The height should be slightly shorter than the side panels by about an inch.
22. Nail the center divider to the back of the box.
23. Cut a top shelf for the box to width and length. Round it with the router and sand. Screw it to the top of the box using pocket screws.

Very creative, it's great when you see something that you like, and you have the skills to create yourself a better version of it.

I tried to replicate this project, but the pocket screws did not work for the face frames. Cutting the dado for the panel removes the material the pocket screw should screw into. I had to use dowels and glue instead. I think it could work if you used a router and small diameter cutter to make the dados.

I have the exact same problem. What a really poor presentation by this show to not have plans available and also have so many design problems.

I like this video, and I like the adjustments Tommy made to dress up the sides. I do have a question, though: where does he use the 1x8s? It looks like all of the rails are made with 1x4s. Are they the top and bottom of the face?

I think I might make a bit beefier outdoor version of this for my mom to be able to put all her gardening tools and other stuff in. I hope she'll like it for Christmas.

He's not a plumber. And what is wrong with using a flux brush for glue? It doesn't matter what you use. You just need something to spread it with.

Absolutely forget about only 4 HOURS for this build. I have all the required tools and it will be about 16 hours to finish and that does not include painting. Video is missing all kinds of information on the build that you will find out about the hard way as you go.

For anyone not very skilled with a table saw attempting to do this. Do not try to do what Tommy did at 5:05. He made it look easy because of his decades of experience. Plunging lumber into a table saw blade is a sure way of getting injured. Stopping in the middle of a cut and lifting the lumber can also get you injured.

Don't give it a flat bottom because the children will empty it out and they will push each other in it across the floor. Lots of fun, right? Guess who gets to put the toys in it after they are in bed?

In that case, put casters on it, won't damage the floors. Mom and Dad are always picking up after their kids, aren't they?

@brianm.9451
@brianm.9451 6 лет назад
When you use those tools daily, then the $10,000 tools has paid for itself. That toy box will last decades and no, it’s not $500.
@ImTheJoker4u
@ImTheJoker4u 6 лет назад
Brian M. Who said anything about using those tools daily?? This video is about building a toybox. My point was that this is not a project the average "happy homeowner" could undertake with a circular saw and a drill. More than likely, if you already own all those tools, you're a GC, and really don't need Tommy to hold your hand to build a simple toybox.
@brianm.9451
@brianm.9451 6 лет назад
Also, it's a $50 toybox. I'm sure Tom owns those tools. Oh, and you can build that with hand tools. Your post is asinine as this video is meant to be entertaining not an advertisement to buy $10,000 worth of tools.
