Over time, it evolved into an expatriate enclave, but it also became popular among locals. The area was officially named “Holland Village” by the Rural Board in 1929. In the 1960s, it was a cluster of two-story shophouses and wooden shacks, with businesses serving a predominantly Western clientele. The growth of a local residential population helped sustain the area even after the British military withdrew from Singapore in the early 1970s. Today, Holland Village remains a vibrant neighborhood with retail outlets, dining options, and a mix of expatriate and local residents.
Additionally, Holland Drive is located in the Queenstown area and was named after Queen Elizabeth II to mark her coronation ceremony in 1953. It was the first residential area where the Singapore government tested public housing initiatives.
