I always thought this film was decent, when I found out people hated it, it was one of the moments where I was like...umm okay. I've seen worse and ive seen better but it was a solid rental to me tbh
I remember seeing this on a new IMAX theatere back in 2000, the movie was good and the effects were actually ahead of their time. I don't get why people didn't like it, I rewatched it a few years ago on DVD and I still liked it.
Beerdy - Bruce Lee Central Ahhh... Seeing this film back in the year 2000 with IMAX in good ol 1.43:1 ratio. Even though the ratio was supposed to be 1.85:1 but I guess this version must be an open matted version.
Yea for sure, the special effects at the time, I remember them being mind blowing, specifically the opening scene. Great way to introduce you to the idea of invisiblity.
People say this movies bad? I agree with James. Its pretty good. I love Kevin Bacons delivery of the Superman and Wonder Woman joke. I laugh every time.
I just love that Kevin Bacon go full ham in some part of the movie. Also he's kinda jerk in the beginning but it fell into "Acceptable" part until he went full insane.
You seem to forget about the kind of Remake of this Movie from 2006, Hollow Man 2 starring Christian Slater. It was Direct-to-DVD, but still a movie based on the Invisible Man.
Seeing through his eyelids is almost genius. If his retinas are transparent, he wouldn't see anything. We see by absorbing light. Overall, though, I thought it was a fun movie. And the invisible hands squeezing boobs was pretty amazing to teenage me, despite the context.
Good point. I guess an invisible suit would be more practical then if it could bend the light through you while keeping your visibility from the inside.
“retinas can’t function while invisible” ...so we are assuming light passes through him rather than being refracted? he is not losing mass or any other physiological change aside from his ability to be seen. as the means for invisibility, he simply can’t be seen, so we must assume refraction. a) the retina does not need to absorb or reflect light to function, it simply needs to process the information contained in the light entering it b) it’s a fictional movie, so if it says he is invisible, in this films universe thats possible, and if it says he can see, then similar logic dictates that he should be able to.
"It's amazing what you can do when you don't have to look at yourself in the mirror any more." That line alone made the movie quite memorable for me. I always felt it was underrated.
I made the same comments so i completely agree. They just don't hold my attention. Not even Mike. I prefer to watch him livestream and James do the Reviews alone.
James' ideas for a new Invisible Man at the end of the video is like when GodzillaMendoza unintentionally predicted the PS4 Spiderman game, he got his wish and a new Invisible Man just came out that's also a completely different interpretation.
I wonder if the 2020 'Invisible Man' was meant to be in that mantra, but then it got thrown out and re-started from scratch? How different would it be if WERE part of the Dark Universe?
The 2020 film was very much separate from whatever was intended for the Dark Universe. Leigh Whannell said that when he was given the Invisible Man IP to work with, the Dark Universe was never brought up.
I actually really liked the that version. We owned it on VHS. I'm surprised James didn't mention it. Edit: Holy crap I just looked it up and John Carpenter directed it.
I absolutely love Hollow Man. Saw it three times in the movie theater, and have seen in maybe 5 times since then. I always enjoy it from beginning to end. No clue why it's considered bad.
This movie is a psychological gem. It makes you question how people react once they get a taste of power. In this movie basically all of his dark impulses surfaced once he was able to get a taste of that power. It's pretty frightening when you think about it. I agree about the overkilling ending took you out of the movie. I wish they had a creepier ending like Halloween.
Really, people hated it? I thought it was a decent film. Certainly much better than "shaky-cam, jumpscare-much, obviously-notscary" movies these days... It explores the descent of one man's morality when given power and holds no responsibility behind it and thinks himself highly from others... In other words, how to be a psychopath...
I never realized back then scary movie 2 majority of the theme was hollow man mixed in with a bunch of what ever movies that was popular around that time. Like popular horror or scifi movies for the most part!
It's possible the serum does more then turn people invisible. It may have altered his body chemistry to become stronger/resilient. He should naturally become visible when his body replace cells. So it's doing something really weird.
To me this is a great movie it's not a classic or legendary but I can watch it more then once I feel like back then if a critic gave a bad review everyone ends up hating your movie which is stupid
This movie was taboo, i was in 3rd grade and watching it was like doing something illegal but fun hahah the only sad scene is where he kills the dog :(.
It was always my understanding that in League of Extraordinary Gentlemen The character that they had portray as an Invisible Man was the thief that you mentioned and he stole the ability to become invisible. Any one else remember that scene ?
They actually made mention of being able to see through your eyelids in John Carpenter's "Memoirs of an Invisible Man" from 1992 (8 years prior to this).
"Even the moon is frighten of me, frighten to death!" GOD I love the original! As much as I hate remakes, I wouldn't mind seeing a remake of The Invisible Man!
I agree. I’m not sure what the hate on this movie is about. I’ve read some reviews and from what I can tell it has something to do with the invisible man not being a complex villain enough or something. Many critics didn’t like the fact that he started killing people at the end because the film suddenly became a generic slasher just with an invisible guy. I sort of get what they’re saying, but come on. The fact that you’re being hunted by someone you can’t see is pretty scary. And what else did you expect with this story? An invisible person is either going to use his/her powers for good or evil. Where they looking for some deep character study or something?
its like they missed that the plot was about the guy slowly going insane and losing his morality due to the invisibility heaped on him, almost as if that was the entire plot, or something
To be fair the 4th act with Sebastion seems to be pretty strong it can be explained with the mix of adrenalin, madness and possible chemical altering his body. Also it's pretty fun with the over the edge action. I love this movie!
This is my favorite time of year.....weather's changing, leaves are changing, SNL returns, The Walking Dead is back, and we get some Monster Madness reviews from James!! Happy October to James, Mike, and to all of the Cinemassacre crew!! Can't wait for the new Halloween movie and can't wait for the reviews. (Which I'm sure are coming) Keep up the great work....all my best, guys. :)
Who remembers Memoirs of an Invisible Man with Chevy Chase and Darryl Hannah? Saw in theaters when I was ten and the only thing I remember was that he could only eat or drink clear/ invisible stuff. Yes I'm sure there was strong Crystal Pepsi product placement...
@@GigawingsVideo we should be able to see the food get digested. that's an open door to more creativity. maybe the food indeed turns invisible as well when mixed with the body fluids?
@@MissFlow That opened a new can of worm though. It implied that his bodily fluid also made things invisible. What if the woman he... y'know turn invisibe as well (or the baby, if, y'know....)
@@GigawingsVideo dunno I'd put it that far. with digesting the intestine fluids break down the food into new parts that get fused with the body, thus it makes sense the food would disappear. with fluids like semen though I don't know. it would def conceive an invisible baby since the serum has fused with his DNA. not sure about the woman. scieeenceeee XD
It’s hard to explain my opinion with this movie watching it in 2019. I think the visuals are good. The acting is good. And the direction of the movie is so inspiring to me because Verhoeven was so interested in the invisible man story, so when he heard a writer was doing a screenplay, V signed on it immediately. But the other side of my opinion of this movie is the writing. It makes the whole movie to me felt like nothing in the movie from the actors, even direction seem like it couldn’t breath. It is such a weird way to explain a movie like this, because of *the* *writing.* When ever something in the movie seems good, the cliches just pound the movie lower on its rating, and I’m talking about the “how good is it” scale. Characters dying in the most ridiculous ways. Kim Dickens character just going mad at characters for no reason. I just do not know how to explain this movie as a whole...
James hit on a lot of what ticked me off about the movie, how invincible the Hollow man suddenly was for no reason. Also, and there was a very obvious way to try and combat the Hollow man, that I don't recall the scientists ever even considering. Turn yourselves invisible too. How? By using the experiment on themselves? No. Altering the fabric of time, reality, and space? No. Just...turn off the damn lights. Sure, you still can't see him (assuming he countered the goggles by this point) but now he can't see you either. I guess this has been done before (I remember either an episode of Batman or G.I. Joe doing this to combat invisible opponents) but it seemed very obvious to me, and I was frustrated that the scientists never tried it.
I would like to see a new Invisible Man movie that is set in like Victorian England and kinda follows how this movie went with the slower buildup to the psychotic stuff. And than maybe have a time laps in the end where the formula to make it again is locked away or the location was forgotten until say like 100 year later to a descendent of the original Invisible Man that we were following in this movie. It’s just an idea and I would like to see something like this eventually made
Sweet I am glad you enjoyed it too, me and a few buddies watched it a few weeks ago and we enjoyed ourselves immensely and the final act had us laughing out asses off as we saw Bacon surviving blow after blow we even had bets on if he survived the final explosion in the laboratory elevator, not gonna lie I was slightly disappointed when he didn't survive because the concept of what he could have rought if he did was much more terrifying then some of his actual actions in the movie itself.
It is just my head canon but I always considered that the invisibility serum also could have gave you more strength. You know, they were making that thing for the military and their goal was to make a super soldier. And although invisible, being butt naked in a battle field or even just out doors during some climate situations can be a bit of a danger so they had to add a bit more "juice" for practicality.
NotcNorck agreed unless your born into a tribe that's used to being naked. 99% of the time it would be dangerous step on a rusty nail and it turns septic that would be fun trying to fix in the middle of enemy territory while invisible.

Wow, I didn't think you'd ever make any videos like this again after starting your "Rental Reviews" series. Those videos are entertaining yes, but there's something just so magical about only James
The interesting thing about this movie, the redeeming qualities of it for me are the tragic, psychological and very human themes of the primary character Sebastian. Watching him devolve into madness is the truly entertaining part.
I'm not a physics guy, but even as a kid I always thought it weird in that movie that you could see the invisible man if he was covered in water and in smoke but unable to see anything at all when in contact with air. Air isnt empty, it has water and other components in it. I would guess that while his body might be totally invisible, you'd still be able to make out some outline from the contact between his body and the air. But then another question is: what about normal everyday stuff like sweating, oily skin and getting your hands dirty from touching everything? Surely there's some distinct parts of the body that would be visible because of other substances stuck to them. The only way I'd guess the invisible man can be fully invisible is that he would have to be super sparkling clean and naked in space . But then why even eh?
I remember being excited for this, as I am a huge fan of Robocop, and Starship Troopers. I didnt think it was terrible, just dissapointing. Mostly because I was hoping it would get even darker, but it just ended with a silly showdown in the lab. Thats another thing, most of the movie seemed like it took place in the lab.
Also, in true Verhoeven fashion, this film pissed off plenty of people. There's a few scenes of animal abuse that rubbed many the wrong way. Hell, if you can't handle the opening of the film, you may as well give up. Similar to Starship Troopers and Robocop, many confuse the satirical nature of Verhoeven's film for something that's nihilistic fetish.
@@WarlordRising The Sixth Sense was pretty predictable in my opinion, I thought Unbreakable was Shyamalan's best work overall. Stir of Echoes walks all over The Sixth Sense.
walco DE BRUYN - There are two movies I would love for him to take a look at, and they are the Andy Warhol-produced Flesh for Frankenstein and Blood for Dracula.
In all honesty, it's not bad. It's fine. But just fine. The last act kinda suffers, but it's perfectly okay. I watch it mainly for the amazing effects.
If I had the money, Id give you the funds to create that version of the invisible man you spoke about at the end of the video. Alongside Frankenstein, The Invisible Man is one of my favorites! I saw that movie with my mom on tv once and the effects and story blew our minds!
