I was such a huge fan of this gal. She was so incredibly talented and never got anywhere near the recognition that she justly deserved. Frequently snubbed by Country Radio. Just give a listen to some of the great songs on her 1992 "Getting It Dunn" Album that were never released. "Let Go" would have been bigger then "You Really Had Me Going" So would have "If Your Heart Can't Do The Talking" which sounds allot like Shania Twain's "If Your Not In It For Love (I'm Outta Here)" from only a few years later. I have often wondered if Shania and Mutt Lange didn't draw directly from that song? I will always believe they did.
Saw her in concert at the Medina Inn Entertainment Center in the early nineties.. She was walking into the crowd with a wireless mike as all the guys were cat calling. Great lady!!!. RIP Sweetheart...
Saw her doing that in North Georgia one time. Sang part of one song with a wireless mic sitting on some guys lap in the audience. She was having a blast! RIP Holly.
Absolutely adored her. She was an integral part of music's last collective gasp of consequence, aka the New Traditionalist movement of the late 1980s - early 1990s. She is greatly missed.
That late 80's and early 90's country period is one of my musical sweet spots. Holly Dunn was one of many who was the soundtrack to my childhood then, along with Randy Travis, Ricky Van Shelton, The Judds, Paul Overstreet, etc. I really miss Holly!
How very sad that Holly passed away so young. But I always loved her music from the first time I heard her music. She was a very underrated singer, Loved her voice, and what a beautiful woman. WOW!!! I don't know how I missed her earlier songs but the first time I found out about Holly Dunn I was watching a video countdown show on TV and her video "You Really Had Me Going" just came on the TV and I Loved the video and the song right away. What a unique Country artist. Her songs are so great, am surprised to this day that Holly did not have more #1 hits
Holly actually had 4 number 1 songs between the three major Country Charting services at the time and Two Gold Albums. "Heart Full Of Love" and Milestone's Greatest Hits. Probably all 3 of her MTM albums would have gone Gold easily, if they didn't go out of print when the label folded. But she should have had many more if not Blacklisted by Country Radio before the end of 1991. All of her album's were more than good enough that with more singles, videos, and promotion they could have been Multi-platinum sellers. The 1992 Album "Getting It Dunn" should have been huge, but was totally snubbed by Country Radio. To this day I'm ticked off about that. Then she got inexplicably dropped by Warner Brothers records in late 1992 or early 1993 out of nowhere. This should never have happened.
Man - she had it all, most notably ATTITUDE - aside from reminding me very vividly of a couple of the girl cousins I grew up with (bless 'em - I had no sisters and they TRIED to keep me on the path!)...
She opened the door for a lot of female artists for country as well. not as much as the older people like Dolly Parton, and The mandrell sisters, and stuff like that. but, Dwight Yoakam hit the country scene, and blew it up, and this lady jumped on the Yocum train and definitely brought his swagger and style for the female side of country. she's awesome she's she's the best man.
Aviano base US base radio in my home in northern Italy. Thank God for allowing me to have a way to find country music and connect with the music of love and human heart. Angela, Umbria Italy
Listen to the song "If Your Heart Can't Do The Talking" off her criminally under exposed "Getting It Dunn" CD in 1992. Holly spent two years producing this project, and it should have been the biggest success of her career up to the point. The album I mean. Well, anyway "If Your Heart Can't Do The Talking" in my opinion must have had a direct influence on Shania Twain's Number 1 Hit from only three years later "If Your Not In It For Love )"im Out of Here". The arrangement, the instrumentation, literally everything, and it's every bit as good if not even better of a song. If they would have put that out as the first single and video, I still believe that "Getting It Done" would have flown off the shelves. Personally, I expected her second single the first one had no video from that album and received sparse airplay, to be "Let Go" which she'd been performing live for sometime in concert to thunderous response. Ultimately that never saw a release either. Ralph Emory loved it when she performed the tune on Nashville Now. This was way before the CD was released. Both those two songs and several others had Mega-Hit written all over them and Warner Brothers barely even promoted this brilliant album which got great reviews from critics. That album should have been just huge. Multi-Platinum. As it was few people got to hear it and it got lousy exposure. Still galls me to this day.
