You know what's well done about this scene? James' fear even when attempting to stand up to Mac, and Mac still getting control over him. James is bigger than Mac, he is stronger than him, he should be able to overpower him but he can't because Mac still has so much control over him, even as an adult. And then as Mac starts hitting him, he goes immediately into a fetal position and tries to protect himself. Very realistic and very heartbreaking.

James is the only reason I watch hollyoaks, I don’t usually invest myself in soaps and hollyoaks isn’t the best of them but James Nightingale has surprising depth to his character.

This would have been a great Whodunnit? set up, especially if Mac had died. I realise that it would have been too soon after Amy to do a Whodunnit?, but imagine if they had done this storyline with James, Marnie, Hunter, Prince, Sally, Lisa and maybe some others as suspects (Ellie may or may not be a suspect) and ended the episode with 0:00 to 0:17 shown from a different camera angle, so we don't see who comes in, and then cut to something else, and return as Mac is pushed out of the window, but we don't see by who. Episodes would then go by, with us finding out more about what each suspect was doing that day, with some clues contradicting each other, making us unsure what to believe, (a suspect could initially have an alibi, but then something contradicts it), but still make enough sense to those who are paying attention, though relying on us to do some detective work, and determine which clues/alibis are false and which aren't. I'd also have James be the obvious suspect, so obvious that you, at least, almost don't want it to be him, even if you think it is just for James to get revenge on Mac, because it seems far too predictable that it is James, and also have James act really suspicious when away from others, like he's trying to hide something about that day, making it look to us like he's trying to protect himself - basically make him a walking red herring. Then, on the day advertised as being the day we find out who killed Mac (assuming he dies in this version), we find out one by one what the suspects were doing through flashbacks, and at the end of the episode, James looks up at the window and has a flashback to this video, as we see that it was James who confronted Mac that day. We assume this must mean that James was the one who attacked Mac, and find ourselves confused when James's "big moment" fails. Then Ellie comes in, and before we can even register what's going on, she pushes Mac in anger, and all is revealed to us (including that James was acting strangely because he was protecting Ellie, not himself.) I'd even have Ellie *not* be one of the main suspects, so it comes as more of a surprise that it was her.
