Peter Dinklage started this ball rolling with his comments about the dwarfs in Snow White being offensive, lots of dwarf actors have blamed him for losing work. Dinklage is always working and probably a millionaire so his stupid comments wont affect him.
Disney appreciates you spreading that rumor. Dinklage didn't say not to cast them or that it would be offensive to cast them. He said don't make them one dimensional stereotypes that can be summed up with a single adjective (i.e. sleepy, dopey, grumpy, etc). Disney didn't want to be respectful of little people, so they cancelled the project, and then diverted attention from the fact that they are assholes by getting Fox News to spread that is was Dinklage's fault. Imagine that...a giant media company controlling the media narrative so good little sheep can repeat what they're told. Trust me, if Disney wanted to make a movie they would, whether Peter Dinklage liked it or not. They're trying to get out of a project that they know would have bombed by throwing Peter under the bus.
I have a few friends with Dwarfism that are doing pretty well. Jimmy Vee who was R2-D2 in the sequel trilogy and played several characters through Dr Who. Leigh Gill who had a nice role in Joker. Ed Osmand who recently did Dungeons & Dragons and also Dumbo There’s a lot who are still consistently busy… even if you don’t always notice them in the movies, there’s usually something or another that they’re working on in some way.
Hollywood hates midgets AND shorter people in general. Recently examples I can think of are Dungeons and Dragons 4 where they used CGI to make Bradley Cooper smaller as oppose to casting a actual midget. Or the recent Wonka movie where they casted Hugh Grant and used CGI to make him a oompa loompa. While shorter people are also getting discriminated. Like how they implied the successor of the Wolverine role (a 5 foot 3 character) is going to be freakin Superman himself Henry Cavill or that Willy Wonka himself is a short dude. He's taller than the oompa loompas, but the original books there are covers with him and Wonka's no taller than 5 foot. And these are just recent examples in the last year!
I never thought much about this, but now that I've watched this video, the most recent film I can think of with dwarf actors in it is American Pie 5: The Naked Mile and little people were called Midgets in that and everyone just laughed and nobody had a problem with it
I suspect there are some in Hollywood who are more than happy to cast dwarf actors but whenerver they do there's either a backlash from people like Dinklage (who a lot of the other dwarf actors blame for messing up their roles by stirring the 'typecast' pot) or, potentially now, non-dwarf actors who *could* complain they are a better actor and got turned down because of positive discrimination, especially for CGI heavy movies where, if a part requires a dwarf, it can easily be played by a non-dwarf actor, as we saw in Lord of the Rings and others. Whatever decision they make now *someone* will decide to be offended (as you say that seems to be the default for too many people these days, almost wanting to be offended to give them something to complain about) so they probably sidestep the problem entirely as much as possible with the huge negative affect on dwarf actors.
I don't think it's just people getting offended for no reason, it's that a character should not be designed for a dwarf or non-dwarf specifically, the roles should be written so that in auditions the best actor, no matter what they look like, gets the job. This obviously extends outside of dwarfism as well.
And how many people are going to see an action film with a dwarf playing the main role? Let's be sensible. Dwarfs just don't cut the action hero mustard.
Yes I definitely agree with you it's not good in Hollywood now for dwarf actors which is a shame so many of them are great too. Not sure if the live action Snow White is coming out at all next year as been a bit of trouble over it at Disney.
Snow White live action remake, if thats gonna be the title, could affect people going to see it, but middle aged ppl i think will avoid it, coming next March, dont be surprised if it bombs, some movies do not need to be remade, including the awlful The Wiz!!!!!!
willow tv show was bad sorry to say thats why its not get a 2nd season. some of the american pie direct to dvd films had short actors and of course there is the show life is short with warwick
