Hollywood Portraits Remastered is one of our most ambitious projects to date. This video teaches you how to capture Hollywood style cinematic portraits both indoors and out using a range of continuous lighting techniques.
Starring both Chloe-Jasmine Whichello and Jamie Roche this production shows you how to recreate the enigmatic charm of a bygone era of photography. You'll learn how to shoots both men and women in a variety of creative and inspirational ways.
This video is set against the backdrop of a fabulous 17th century English country house. Damien ventures into the bedrooms, the music room, the library, the grounds and even the cellar to explain and demonstrate the classic lighting techniques he learned on his lighting director training at the BBC in the early 1990s.

Amazing what you can do with a 16Mb X-Pro1 and a kit lens. It shows that we can get too carried away with camera gear. Knowledge and experience of photography and lighting makes more of a difference than the camera and lens.
@LovegroveTraining
@LovegroveTraining 9 месяцев назад
That's a really good point, Stuart. I still use my X-Pro2 from time to time as it is less intimidating for the person in front of the camera. As far as technical quality is concerned 16mp is enough for most people and print sizes.

A shame and luck at the same time that this channel doesn't get the attention it deserves. The experience Mr. Lovegrove shares with us on here is priceless and I think maybe too complicated and dry for the younger generation of photographers who are used to that sensual overload kind of RU-vid videos and tutorials. I like the straight forward approach of this format here while still clearly showing and mentioning everything important without leaving stuff out, like most people nowadays do - e.g. not really showing the angle of the flash or shooting a lot of the lighting out of the frame so you can't "steal" their technique, which is a bit controversial to me. And man do the results look great! Maybe not TOO up to date, but I kinda find that very refreshing - because I learned the craft in another before the DSLR explosion from the late 2000s which changed everything for photographers and also devaluated the craft and art to this weird habit of only viewing pictures for a couple of seconds and then swipe to the next on your phone. Everything today looks exactly the same and is so over edited in post where these here images look always awesome straight out the camera with very little post production. This in my opinion is real mastery of your tool and not photoshopping the hell out of your images - make them great right away instead! I so enjoy this channel! Thank you so much Mr. Lovegrove!

This is the first video of yours I've seen, and I am in love. Normally, I hate "gabby" vloggers, but everything you say is actually helpful. I am so impressed and grateful. I've been a hobbyist all my life, since I found my mom's old "Brownie" forty years ago, but folks have started offering to pay me for the last couple of years, so I have scoured RU-vid to be worthy of payment. This video is, by far, the most useful and direct I've seen. Thank you. I have a vintage shoot this weekend, and feel far better prepared. (This isn't a paid shoot. I'd never charge when I'm experimenting with a new lighting technique.)
@LovegroveTraining
@LovegroveTraining 6 лет назад
Thank you for those kind words. I'm so used to seeing brevity or criticism on RU-vid that I'm scared to come here. Your compliments lifted my day. I wish you every success with your shoot and please feel free to connect with me via social media or via the contact forms on my website if you have any questions. Kindest regards, Damien.

I had a 5D, I sold it and bought a 5D mk2, It is somewhere in a cupboard with the Zeiss 21mm, Canon 50mm and Canon 100mmL primes. I also own a Nikon D700 and the three f/2.8 zooms. It is also tucked away in a cupboard. The Fujifilm X-Pro1 is better than both my SLRs so I use that instead.

Love this style of photography. I'm a Nikon shooter and often use a Fujifilm X-T2 for location work for its compact size, but even in 2018 I wouldn't hesitate to use an X-Pro1 or X-E1 (same sensor) on a job. That first-generation X-trans sensor is packed with magic pixie dust.

I know this is probably a little late to the party, but even now this is a wonderful tutorial on recreating the Hollywood look. You mentioned using the Tiffen Pro Mist filter. In low light I get a very similar look when I add my Pentax K7 28mm onto my Canon 7D mk1. It's a nice look. Anyway, wonderful tutorial.

Excellent! I like the way you explain and don't just show. I started with blue bulbs and reflectors back in the 70's before "graduating" to strobes, but I still have a couple of Photogenic lights with Fresnel lenses. I may have to dust them off. Thanks!

Very happy to find your channel and website! Will your Hollywood Portraits Remastered class discuss how to avoid causing discomfort in the subjects' eyes? I'm a long-time strobe user now trying to incorporate continuous lights. Thanks!
@LovegroveTraining
@LovegroveTraining Год назад
Hi, The softer the light the greater the problem. Footballers can play in full sun without sunglasses or squinting because the grass reflects just 18% of the light. On the other hand play on a white sand beach and it's impossible to keep eyes open without sunglasses. It's the sand acting as a big soft light that's the problem. Bruce Springsteen at the Hollywood Bowl with a 5kw spotlight on him - no problem. Hard light is perfect in this regard. There are no problems to discuss. Just perceived ones. I hope this helps. Damien.

Hello, A fantastic video. I wish it was longer. You really have a great personality for teaching photography and I was stuck to my chair just watching you get the results you produced. I do have one question, and it's about light meters. How did you get away with not having to measure the light that was hitting your subject? I thought a light meter would make it a lot easier to get the amount of light you required, but you seemed to just know. great stuff.

Music really helps with inspiration for me ;-) So I've watched this one a bunch of times for the wonderful images (and) music. I concentrate almost exclusively on Hurrell type portraits and film noir stuff, thanks to you! I got my Arri fresnels and it was off to the races (and a dedolight for surgical light sculpting). So much to learn and experiment with. All started cause I found your work when I got my first camera, a Fujifilm XT-2, two years ago. I always love your work!

hi love grove. thanks for the post. your info is invaluable. in response to your question about where you 5d is. were you joking when you said you fuji is better than both your nikon and canon? what about the fuji is better aside from the fact that it is smaller and more compact and convenient. i only ask because i currently own apsc mirrorless and am trying to decide whether to trade in for full frame 5d or nikon. thanks.

Hi Damien , rin some of the shots I can see there's a lot of very dark areas, are you to concerned if certain areas are completely blacked out ? As when I do some portraits if certain areas are showing in Lightroom as completely blacked out I try to lift them but then of course it he areas start to look a little grainy, so should I worry too much about that?...I've met you a few times on the photo roadshows....keep up the good work
