It's a gross disservice to dismiss William H. Macy as a "character actor". If you take a look at things he's shown in workshops, particularly in connection with David Mamet, his breadth and mastery of craft is immediately evident.
I recently watched the cartoon series "The Lionhearts" for the first time, and when I knew Macy did the voice of the lion dad in the show, I almost began waiting for him to say "Honey, I'm home!" like his "Pleasantville" character did. 😂 He was great in those as well as "Seabiscuit", which like "Pleasantville" both had Tobey Maguire and directed by Gary Ross.
