The edition I'm reviewing is the Marbled Slate Calfskin Leather version, but Holman also publishes this text block in the following editions:

This perfectly sized Bible measures 9.25" x 6" x 1.75" and on my scale, it weighs in at 2 pounds 3 ounces. The Bible ships in a handsomely designed two-piece presentation box, and on the inside, the Bible arrives wrapped in a black paper envelope with an adhesive seal. There's also a card insert that informs the customer about Holman's lifetime guarantee.

The marbled slate calfskin leather used for this edition is absolutely stunning, and it has a complex texture and look to it. In terms of the tactile experience, it is very soft and plush to the touch. There are striations that give it an interesting texture as well as some lighter/darker variations in color.
The front and back of the cover are clean for a classic, minimalist look, and the spine features five raised hubs as well as the CSB logo, Holy Bible, Christian Standard Bible, and the Holman logo stamped in silver foil.
There's also a nicely done perimeter stitch and the blue-under-silver art gilding is really eye-catching.
On the inside, there's a single, silver gilt line, and the Bible is Smyth-sewn and edge-lined.
The 10-point typeface used by Holman was developed by 2K/DENMARK, and the text is line-matched for optimal legibility. The single-column, paragraph-style layout is very easy to read, and there's red accenting throughout this black-lettered edition which helps to break up the text.
At the back, you get full access to the CSB concordance, and there are also several sheets of lined note paper as well as full-color (matte) maps.

Thanks so much for your review! 😀It really helps as it's the Bible I've most looked forward to this year. It doesn't seem as high quality as, say, a Schuyler Quentel or PSQ, but given it's priced at around $100 or so, in contrast to a Schuyler Bible at $200+, it looks like a wonderful choice for the price. I wish it wasn't printed in China, but instead printed by Royal Jongbloed in the Netherlands or LEGO in Italy or a similar high end publisher, but that'd probably double the cost. As far as I know, this CSB HHC might be the best premium version of the CSB that's (a) single column, (b) paragraph format, and (c) able to be an every day carry (EDC). Personally, I wish Holman would partner with Schuyler (like how Crossway partnered with Schuyler with the Heirloom Heritage Bibles), and create a stunning single column personal size CSB, or perhaps a premium reader's CSB, but for now I think this CSB HHC is a good choice!

Thanks for the nice comment! Your comments are spot on - there is a difference between this Bible and something produced by RJ, for example, but there's also a big difference in price (as you pointed out). Something else to keep in mind is the fact that this Bible is guaranteed for life by Holman - a big plus that you don't get with other publishers, even on higher-priced editions.

I got the slate also. But I had a strong chemical smell that lasted for a few weeks as you stated. Not sure if that's from the coloring of the leather.

Great review! I realize I could pose this question to Hohman, but i just received my order of the premium marbled burgandy calf skin in the mail today. First thing out of the box is the smell (like an old moldy box of books stored for a few decades! I'm not sure why, but could anyone comment on if it's worth trying to let it air out or return? Nothing visible appears wrong, but the smell is quite strong even lingering in my small home office(in the air). Any advice or wisdom shared is appreciated!

Thanks for the comment, John! Yes, if you watch all the way to the end, I briefly talked about the smell of the Bible. I've had it for about a week and a half now, and the smell of the Bible isn't as bad once it's left out of the box to air out.

I did watch to the end, and appreciate the "one negative" me mention towards the end. I use to work in a Christian bookstore, and remember sometimes getting a group of Bibles in that had some "musty" smell, but oh my .. This thing really wreaks and lingers after use on hands and In air. I will give it time to see where things have settled in a week or two. Thanks again for a great review!

@@johnhb4 Ah, okay... I thought that you might have missed that in the review. To me, it smells like some kind of chemical that was used during the production process, but yes, it's pretty strong straight out of the box. Hopefully it will completely go away after a few weeks of airing out.
