Kei did you watch the second part? Someone went to the coffee shop, collected the holo stuff, and put it in both hot and cold water. It dissolved in neither. More likely, if it was too cold to melt the plastic, the customer ate all of the glitter.

Ok, as a certified Pastry Chef, I can tell you with absolute certainty that the "Diamond Cappuccino" is glitter. Totally glitter. It isn't possible to cut sugar in a way that causes it to reflect and refract in a full spectrum, like Holo glitter. Also, sugar doesn't float. Glitter does. There IS Holo edible glitter out there, I own some. It's made from whisper thin gelatin and is cut by a laser to reflect a very subtle rainbow. However, it melts instantly upon contact with hot liquid. But that coffee? That sh** is STRAIGHT GLITTER, boo. Xoxo

This actually inspired me to do a bit of research into holographic glitter! From what I found, holographic glitter is exclusively made from cutting up holographic film, and holographic film is made when an emulsion (mixture) of gelatin and silver halides are coated onto a plastic film, usually a sheet of acetate. Silver halides are not inherently toxic as they won't be absorbed by the body. In large quantities, they can have adverse effects, but from my research, the only people truly exposed to those quantities are the people who work with them in a manufacturing capacity. The acetate sheets in question are made up of cellulose acetate fibers, which are manufactured from naturally occurring materials like wood pulp. On a basic level, this means that, again, acetate is not inherently toxic. However, the human body is incapable of digesting cellulose, which means that the plastic components will come out the same way they went in. Depending on the cut of the glitter, this could cause damage to your internal organs. Additionally, the manufacturing process behind making acetate sheets and cellulose acetate fibers use quite a few chemicals that are harmful to the human body. I can't say for certain what percentage of these chemicals remains in the finished product if any at all, but acetate IS food-contact safe and is used for in a lot of food packaging. TLDR; Glitter is basically finely cut food packaging. Also, I would like to note that the above is referencing how holographic craft glitter is made, and that by-in-large craft glitter is food-contact safe. Since the makers of disco dust do not provide an ingredient list on their product and do not advertise it as actually edible, I feel that it is safe to assume that disco dust is basically just craft glitter. So, I was watching Royalty Soaps, and she was dousing her Lucky Charms inspired soap with a coat of holo eco-glitter and it got me wondering.... So, I looked into eco-glitters and apparently they are plant-based and can naturally compost (as opposed to only being compostable in an industrial composter). Which had me wondering if that glitter would be useable in this cappuccino since the glitter isn't just straight up plastic?

Probably not, as they say it is not made for consumption. Cellulose isn't something humans can eat sadly. If you have no clue what it is... imagine eating wood or cotton pulp. Sadly, that stuff isn't going to able to get digested by us, but a horse or a cow can digest it fine.

@@jenniferdinh7531 related note: dietary fibre is cellulose. So it may be toxic for other reasons (idk as I haven't researched it) but the toxicity wouldn't be from the cellulose. Additional related note: cellulose *is* a type of sugar (Beta glucose is its 'real' name). Basically, chemically, if it ends in -ose it's a sugar. E.g lactose, fructose, alpha/beta glucose, etc. So it's not wrong to say that holo glitter can be made from sugar, but I certainly wouldn't wan to eat much of it.

ReVe I know you are probably joking, but actually no it's not stupid. To produce, it's less of an impact on the environment, is easier for the bags to be recycled and it cost significantly less to ship because you can ship more than you can with cartons. It's not as if cartons don't spill as well.

Tip from a person that worked almost the whole summer in a café: in order to make art on a cappuccino, you need to pour out some of the remainder milk (after filling it up almost completely) and then use the frothy milk that remains on the bottom of the jug. Just in case someone wants to try out making some of the artsier, modern-style cappuccinos at home.

Only on the east coast. On the west coast we use plastic or glass bottles and cartons. I would like to try it though. Using bags would probably create a lot less waste.

Tom Haflinger IDK, Lush makes fully biodegradable glitter from seaweed, so edible glitter seems possible.

rainfrog well, edible glitter and glitter that dissolves definitely exists. But holographic glitter is not the same thing as what you're talking about. Lush's stuff isn't holographic.

I'm a barista at a local cafe and bakery and yeah, we would definitely be shut dow for serving anything like this. Also from my perspective this is a "holo latte" a latte is espresso with micro-foam a cappuccino is a smaller drink with dry foam lol but no hate I love u simply! The reason you can't do the designs is because it's frothed and not steamed as you would make it with a steam wand on an espresso machine. If you want me to make you a simply tea latte, come see me at Gemini Cafe in Bethel Maine. I LOVE U SIMPLY!

As a former professional pastry chef I gotta tell everyone if there was a completely edible holo glitter then that shit would be hitting the bakeries WAY before a coffee shop. I think the best deduction is they are using the “safe for food contact stuff”. I have seen actual edible glitter, but it still does not look anything like real glitter, it just looked like colored sugar sprinkles. I think that product was not popular.

Barista here! The milk frother you used will almost never give you milk appropriate for latte art! Latte art comes from microfoam which you get by surfing the steam wand on the top of the steaming pitcher. Also, the difference between a cappuccino and latte is all in the amount of foam, the milk frother didn't provide nearly enough foam for a cappuccino, so you actually made holo lattes!
