Recently I picked up one of the dreamiest pedals that people on RU-vid have been raving about: The Hologram Electronics Microcosm. Apparently, whatever you put into it comes out as liquid gold, so I obviously had to try it for myself. Made in batches, you need to pre-order them a few months in advance, and they are definitely not the cheapest effect around. However, I couldn't resist.
So... does it live up to the hype? In many ways, aye. The Microcosm can turn the most boring, dry signal and turn it into a beautiful dreamscape. There's a few down sides, and one fairly major problem that you should be aware of if you're considering one though. In this video I give my thoughts on the pedal, whether it's worth the money, what it might compare to, and highlight the issues I've run into. At the end, I include a bunch of different sound examples as well with a Behringer VC340, Game Boy, Pocket Operators, and some drone device from Handmade Electronic Instruments.
Time stamps below.
Pedal Intro and Comparison 00:00 − 04:48
The Good and Not So Good 04:49 − 13:13
Conclusion 13:14 − 19:17
Sound Demos 19:18 − 29:09
As an update, following the video and speaking to Hologram Electronics, a factory reset following the firmware upgrade appears to have had some success in getting rid of the pops and clicks. I'll do some more testing and see how it fares, and hopefully the issue won't return!
