Hi Squatch, My maternal Grandfather worked for Ben Holt from sometime around 1920 until the war in 1939. I have his photo albums from those times. They chronicle all the early Holt/Cat period. Are you interested in seeing some of it?
I used to start loaded conveyors like that on the tail pulley with a 5-foot bar. They'd tap the starter and I'd reef on it. Didn't do that much with the foreman there though but it saved a lot of shoveling.

WOW! That was really something and running that thing WOULD be a depression all right. It was bigger than it looked, like an old 7 or so. And I think you were right about the 2. Poor little fellow! did you climb up and bar the crank a tiny bit to see if it moved? probably froze up with the stack straight up darn it. otherwise it would still turn over.
