Holy Crap! Are you ready to witness a possible Record Breaking Train at Horseshoe Curve? If so, this video is for you!
Welcome back to a new video and day 2 of my Altoona, Pa meetup. Today brings us to the World Famous Horseshoe Curve where myself and many others will climb the 194 steps to reach the viewing area and witness one of the LONGEST trains I've ever seen. Before heading to the top, overcast skies and low clouds offered some nice visuals from the sky. I also met a viewer of mine who wanted to be in the video. All in all it was a great time at this iconic location. So let's check out Horseshoe Curve for my day 2 meetup in Altoona. Enjoy

I remember as a kid the only way to get up there were the steps. There was no gift shop, no fees. Years later they added an ice cream stand. If you drove thru the tunnel there & went up the mountain, at the top was a zoo called Forest Zoo. Also, across the road was a park called Fairyland Forest. The theme was all about fairytails. No rides, just alot of things for kids to climb on & do. The longest train I remember seeing as a kid was where the front of the train was already going around the side of the mountain & the tail end hadn't even made it around the other side of the mountain yet. A lot of great memories. Thanks for reminding me. 👍👍

very nice. the reason why that second train had 6 locomotives on the head end is because the 4 behind the two were DIT Dead in Tow, meaning they are not running and they're only being moved. though it is nice to see a 6 engine lashup

Why do I increasingly see and read the term "Driving" in relation to locomotive engineers?!? Engineers Do Not "drive" trains.... they do Not, and cannot.. "Steer" a train to go in whatever direction they want it to go, nor operate the throttle and braking system to speed up or slow down / stop.... whenever and however they choose to, as when "driving" a personal or commercial vehicle. They "Operate or, Run" it, in full accordance and compliance to prescribed schedules and FRA & Company mandates.

@@giniwalters8401.... a "girl" after my own heart... who loves trains of all kinds. Do or did you have railroaders in you family? I'm going to be driving over to Parsons, KS. to catch the UP 4014 ("Big Boy") on it's 2021 tour leaving out of Cheyenne... This morning, actually... at 8:00AM (Mtn. time).... anyway, it will be on an over-night layover in Parsons, KS (nearest point, for me.. about 2 hours drive).. arriving at 4pm (Central time) Wed. evening, Aug.11th. Thinking of getting a motel room for the night, then I can film it leaving out the next morning (Thurs.) at 8AM... heading to Texas. I was on the UP's 3985 and the 844, several times.. years back when Steve Lee was running the steam program and was the "hogger" on both of those locomotives... though the 3985 was "his baby". I use to hang out in the steam shop there, and turn wrenches once in a while as well, when I use to live out that way until 2011.... great times and memories, for sure. After I go see the 4014 at Parsons, am heading to Charma, NM to get on board the narrow gauge Cumbres & Toltek RR and head up to CO. on it. I love Narrow gauge steam and have wanted to do this for years, finally heading over there..... want to come with? lol Sorry, shouldn't "tease" you like that..... but it sure would be great to share things with someone who has mutual interests... makes whatever you do, a Lot more enjoyable... as I'm sure you know that, already. : ) One of my great uncles was a steam locomotive engineer back east on the old Boston & Albany RR, which later became the NY Central RR (then Penn Central)... anyway, after he retired in 1953, he became the first steam "tourist" railroad engineer for the Ocean Spray Cranberry narrow gauge which opened in 1955. I had three uncles on my dads side who were also RR men... two were engineers, one on the New Haven and one on the Penn Central, and one uncle... a conductor on the New Haven RR (freights). I was a head-end brakeman out west, for a year, then "OJT" as an engineer.... until my "better" half (at the time), gave me an ultimatum one evening after I was "paged" to go out on a training run.... saying, "it's either the railroad, or us... your decision before you get back in from this run"........... I should have stuck with the railroad. : ( Anyway, now... I enjoy railroading anyway I can get it, and no one to tell me I can't. : ) Have a great and blessed day, Gini.

Back in the 80's there was NO fence so you had complete access to the whole curve for some great photos . Many people and myself included , put coins on the track to get a memento from the curve trains . Unfortunately some people were getting much too close for comfort while others seem to be playing chicken with the trains by standing on the tracks for some head on photos . That conduct lead to the fence being erected .

I've been to the curve a few times, and it never ceases to amaze me how much tonnage NS sends over the mountain. Traffic is not what it used to be but still they do send a lot of trains over the curve. Have you been to the bridge over at Cassandra? That is cool too!

Great video JP. I love going to the curve been there many time, even been above it on the hill at night what a show. I would like point out a couple thing, 1 the sound of squealing flanges can be heard else where, it not just reserved for the horseshoe curve. and 2 if you want to see monsters go west of Conway (Pittsburgh), NS is moving 15 to 18000 ft trains west with mid train DPU's. I videoed a 13Q coming down Wooster hill on the Ft. Wayne line, it had to be at least 3 miles long, 3 locos in the front and 2 DPU's in the middle, but I digress you make great videos that I enjoy watching.

Been there once and it costed alot more than five dollars. I was on Amtraks eastbound Broadway Limited in November 1991. This was my second leg of my trip. First was the eastbound California Zephyr from Salt Lake to Chicago. Last one was Philadelphia? To Washington D.C.. Coach class all the way, smokers in the rear of the car thank you. Never again. Unless I get a sleeper... Now it's just SLC to Emeryville.

Nice introduction to the curve, it’s a shame you couldn’t get drone footage as the train was moving past but understandable given people around

It was pretty busy up there, but I agree. Drone footage of that mega train would of been a nice addition to the video.

Jay, It looks so different in summer, so lush. I road the train to Chicago in September of '59 and ,unlike your ride, lucked out and could see the whole train on the curve. You should really wear a hat, I don't think your doing your skin any good burning it like that. That's your business, but that burn cannot be fun. Cheers, Rik

JP, the funicular has been "down" forever, and it's still not working. That's a really big disappointment for me, since I have been planning to go there this September, and 194 steps is a lot for an old fogie like me. They don't seem to be in any hurry to get it fixed. ...Roy

Rare for west bounds to be using track one . Track one has a steep drop off in elevation right after the tunnels , area called the slide . Don’t know why NS would use track one for westbound traffic . Hard climb on track one for west bounds

Only first two units on mixed freight were running as well as the two pushers, the remaining four were dead in tow, probably picked up at Altoona to be taken to other yards for assignment

First time I've viewed one of your videos, excellent presentation, informative commentary, very professional. I've subscribed & look forward to viewing some more. Pardon my ignorance I'm a 77 year old from the UK but where does Conrail fit into the scheme of things, I've been familiar with BNSF, NS, UP & Amtrak etc. for many years but Conrail hasn't shown on my radar.

This was originally built for the Pennsylvania RR. Later changed to Penn Central and later Conrail. Now Norfolk Southern runs the lines.
