I wouldn't post this if it weren't worth listening to again and again. What an awesome display of technical genius and virtuosity! Let me know what you think - I have half a dozen other recordings of this cadenza.
By the way, Salvatore Accardo was the first violinist in history to record all 6 Paganini Violin Concertos in 1974. He made quite the buzz back then, according to my dad, but I'm sure nobody's heard of him today. Buy the CD and you won't be disappointed.

There is no one better. Salvatore Accardo is the master of kings, the king of masters when it comes to playing Paganini.

Salvatore Accardo is the best Paganini's performer of our times !

I actually think that this cadenza doesn't show Accardo at his fiery best, because he's mostly following the usual Sauret cadenza here, whereas in the other 5 concerti, he came up a lot of his own stuff, which is even more technically impressive.

Even very casual violin fans such as myself are very familiar with Salvatore Accardo. Those Paganini concertos with Dutoit from the mid-1970s are among the very few truly great violin recordings. Accardo surpassed even himself. His late recording of the same works for EMI, in which he also conducts Orchestra da Camera Italiana, is nowhere near that dazzling.

This interpretation is amazing. It's always nice to hear different rendition of this concert by another master. That being said, anyone interested in hearing another amazing interpretation should seek out Gil Shaham's.

I actually liked shlomo mintz's cadenze from this piece. He really gets the crazy virtuosity of paganini and goes all out in technical show-offs without straying to far off the themes, yet also not staying to close.

The violinist in the lead-in you refer to might be Accardo playing along with the orchestra...impossible to know though. Absolutely agree with you on all counts!

I agree with dfxr for Vengerov, but Kavakos is a genius. BTW,I find Accardo wonderful.

Oh, I'm sure. But I didn't post this because of technical quality. I'm a musician not a technician. I posted this because Accardo plays this cadenza as if he is on fire. He is a true virtuoso and I wanted to share. By the way, where did you find Kogan's cadenza? I want to hear!

i bought Accardo's recording of the 6 soon after it came out. liked it, still do, big Paganini fan, but Accardo's not my fav. check out Massimo Quarta's website (via google). you can listen to his entire recordings online, incl all 6 Paganini. he's the best. there's also a picture of him and Accardo trying out a violin.

Wow, really? I have been listening to the set for the past 2 weeks over and over again. I absolutely love all of #5, 1st of #1, and 3rd of #3 (la campanella). I agree that they get tiresome, especially if you listen to all 6 front to back in one sitting. But the invention is in the technique and it is all over the place in every concerto.

I like this cadenza the best and have heard a dozen different recordings of it - maybe that's why I'm so impressed. I am not as familiar with the other concerti but I will say that his cadenzas are just generally amazing. I was originally thinking of doing a montage of all 6 cadenzas to compare in one recording - a good idea you think?

his playing harkens back to 19th century tradition with more pure, fiery tone and expressive vibrato and tone color IMO

Insomma, preferisco Accardo.

Accardo is very good, but the best from the best is Michael Rabin, playing Paganini concerto. Marvelous.

I went to the Massimo Quarta website. I listened to "Variazioni su un tema di Weigl" from his Paganini CD. It was incredibly out of tune ... (second portion of the first part).

Especialy about Paganin, all them are below the genius Vasco Abadjiev. Only Franceskati is near to his class.

He plays this equilibristic cadenza with such an ease ... I have this CD set. Unfortunately only the first concerto and the third movement from the second one are bearable. The rest is just a musical crap full of ascending and descending violin passages stuffed with some routine orchestra scores behind, without any invention. No wonder that almost no one plays these pieces.

Paganini's Violin Concerto No. 5 is "musical crap"? Including the second movement? Listen again!
